🌵Prickly pear cacti are loaded with gorgeous, colorful fruit during these hot and sunny late August days. You simply can't miss them. You can spot them especially in southern Italy, lining countryside roads and railway tracks.

Every time I see them, I take a trip down memory lane.
When I was a kid, I used to eat so many of them. There was always that carefree moment interrupted by a tiny, invisible thorn piercing your skin and hurting for days. 😅
Today, luckily, I’ve learned how to peel them. Here is the ultimate method I use:
• Secure the fruit by piercing it firmly right in the middle with a fork. Never touch it with bare hands.
• Using a sharp knife, slice off both ends (the top and the base).
• Make a gentle longitudinal cut along the skin, from one end to the other.
• Use the knife blade to pry the skin open and roll the fruit out. You will get a perfect, clean cylinder without a single thorn.
An extra tip: Soak them in a bowl of water beforehand to help remove the thorns. Then, pop them in the fridge for a couple of hours before peeling. Cold, on these late summer days, they are absolutely heaven.

🇬🇧 Slow travel in Italy isn't an abstract philosophy; it's a logistical choice.
A few days ago, I decided to leave the car behind and board a Fondazione FS historical train: 1930s "Centoporte" wooden carriages, windows you open by hand, and a speed that forces you to take in the Friulian foothills landscape instead of staring at a screen.
My destinations were tiny stone villages like Poffabro and Toppo. No mass tourism crowds, just the sound of footsteps on cobblestones and the smell of Frico (the traditional cheese and potato dish) wafting from the few open taverns. In these places, you walk into a craft shop and still find people working wood by hand, happy to explain their trade without rushing.
Another incredible stop for this type of travel is Orta San Giulio (in Piedmont), a lakeside village easily accessible by regional train. Cars aren't allowed inside: there are only narrow alleys, historic grocery shops filled with alpine cheeses, and the silence of the San Giulio Island right in front.

🇮🇹 Viaggiare lenti in Italia non è una filosofia astratta, è una scelta logistica.
Qualche giorno fa ho deciso di lasciare l'auto e di salire su un treno storico della Fondazione FS: carrozze degli anni '30 "Centoporte" in legno, finestrini che si abbassano manualmente e una velocità che ti costringe a guardare il paesaggio della pedemontana friulana invece di fissare uno schermo.
La mia meta erano i piccoli borghi in pietra come Poffabro e Toppo (in Friuli). Niente flussi turistici di massa, solo il rumore dei passi sul ciottolato e il profumo della Frico (il tipico tortino di formaggio e patate) che usciva dalle poche osterie aperte. In questi posti entri in una bottega artigiana e trovi ancora chi lavora il legno a mano, felice di spiegarti il mestiere senza fretta.
Un'altra tappa pazzesca per questo tipo di viaggio è Orta San Giulio (in Piemonte), un borgo affacciato sul lago che si raggiunge benissimo in treno regionale. Lì le auto non entrano: ci sono solo vicoli stretti, botteghe storiche di alimentari con formaggi d'alpeggio e il silenzio dell'Isola di San Giulio proprio di fronte.

☕ 1. CAPPUCCINO AFTER 11:00 AM IS A CRIME.
For Italians, cappuccino is strictly a breakfast drink. Ordering it at lunch, dinner, or even worse, alongside a plate of pasta is the fastest way to flag yourself as a tourist. After meals, you only order an espresso or a macchiato.
🧀 2. NEVER PAIR GRATED CHEESE WITH SEAFOOD.
