I have a classic #Pinephone with #Mobian. Was around 240 € back then, IIRC. Of course, none of the apps you mentioned would work on it, which is one of the reasons I bought that #smartphone in the first place 🙂 I don't want such apps, if they aren't #freeSoftware.

The report was 100 % accurate.
I started using Jabber ≈ 2014 and message loss was a typical issue back then! I wonder why I still continued to use it. A question to a shrink, I guess.
But I did not experience any message loss since many years, after all clients implemented so-called "Stream Management".
Btw. there are now two pretty good iOS clients (so I heard, I don't have iOS): #Monal by @npub1xxs…xwre and #SiskinIM by @npub10fy…wjz5 (or its fork #Snikket for iOS by [@snikket_im](https://fosstodon.org/@snikket_im )).

I use SIP, too — for calls to/from POTS! Both Ekiga and Linphone were pretty good, but got dropped from #Debian 😞 Now I use Twinkle and will try Gnome Calls, again.
TTBOMK, #Monal by @npub1xxs…xwre used to have one or the other known issue with A/V calls. Sth. with timing, IIRC? Maybe it's fixed now.

For A/V calls, #XMPP itself does the signalling, while the payload is going either directly from device to device, or, if one or multiple clients are behind firewall/NAT, a TURN server is used.
Most public servers should do that. Check on https://compliance.conversations.im/ if XEP-0215 is supported by your server.
Btw. which clients have you tried?

I never tried Signal or Whatsapp, but I'm on free and federated #Jabber/#XMPP since 2014. I came late to the party — Jabber exists since 1999. At some point, Google chat federated with Jabber, but they stopped it, because #BigTech does bigtech things.
Bridges from Jabber to Whatsapp and Signal do exist, i.e. #slidge, but because WA and Signal are anti-federation, the bridge can only work, if one has an account on WA/Signal 😞
Anyway, all friends and family are on Jabber now.

From what I heard, the #Monal MUC is a good place to get help with both Monal and #Quicksy for iOS:

At the moment, Monal developers focus on a complete rewrite of the UI, so they probably can't spend that much time on A/V calls, but I'm sure they still can fix a bug once in a while.

Note, that I have most of my non-technical friends and family on #XMPP, and it works pretty well.

Wenn's ein kleiner Server ist, nähme ich sowieso eher prosody, da aber definitiv mit file storage und *nicht* mit einem RDBMS. Bin mal mit prosody von file storage zu PostgreSQL migriert und bin nach wenigen Tagen reuevoll remigriert. (Nimm das, AfD, wir klauen Euch einfach die Wörter!)

Hast Du Mnesia oder PostgreSQL? Ich höre immer wieder von Problemen mit Mnesia, aber deutlich weniger mit psql. Es gibt ein Migration-Script, IIRC.
Cc @npub1cyh…a45l, der uns damals geholfen hat und vielleicht den Namen des Scripts erinnert.
ejabberd Logging ist aber in der Tat die Hölle. INFO zeigt sehr wenig, DEBUG extrem viel, dazwischen gibt's aber nichts. Und die Logs sind nur verständlich, wenn man Erlang kann.

I don't have any experience with #selfHosting Matrix, but what I heard, it can be difficult, if users join huge rooms. But it should be just fine, if not.
I do #selfHost multiple #Jabber/#XMPP servers, though, both #ejabberd by @npub1mnp…n7wg and #prosody by @npub1jyt…9kzy and that's pretty easy.
From what I heard #snikket by [@snikket_im](https://fosstodon.org/@snikket_im ), a dockerized prosody, is even more easy, but never tried it.
Maybe give both Matrix and Jabber a try and report here on your experience? I'm curious!

Oder noch besser: Die #Taler-#Kreditkarte. #GNUTaler bzw. #NGITaler (wie heißt das richtig?) finde ich sehr viel attraktiver als #Wero, u.a. weil man nicht auf Android/iOS zurückgeworfen wird. Aber TALER gibt's leider nicht als Karte, man braucht immer einen Computer oder Smartphone.

I'm personally not paranoid about Matrix, but still prefer #Jabber. Partially because the former is more or less dominated by a single vendor. Also, because #XMPP is more lightweight. Anyway, whatever is free and federated, is fine with me.

Anyway, it's pretty awful, esp. for people using other Jabber clients with their Prav or Quicksy accounts. Being forcefully logged out after six hours just do re-link their SIM is cumbersome.
Hopefully that stupid order will be defeated!

Alas, I can't use it, because the app is only on Google Android and Apple iOS. Even their desktop client requires such a thingy.

I agree with "go for whatever makes you feel good", BUT would hope, that you feel best by helping with one of the existing clients instead of starting yet another one.
The problem with #Jabber clients is not lack of them, but that most are incomplete. E.g. #ConverseJS and #Gajim lack A/V calls, #Dino lacks adhoc commands and an official Windows build, etc.
Writing a good chat client is a HUGE endeavour. Better join a friendly team than work alone.

Would love to see that feature on #Mobian/#Phosh:
Enter regular #PIN: Unlock.
Enter emergency PIN: Device wiped (factory reset).
Enter guest PIN: Device unlocked for guest users.
Enter control PIN: Same as above, but everything happening on and around the device is streamed encrypted to a NAS. E.g. for toxic partners or toxic border control.
Now just remember the four PINs and don't confuse them!

Tengo instalaciones de #ejabberd por @npub1mnp…n7wg y #prosody por @npub1jyt…9kzy. Ambos facil de instalar (paquetes de #Debian) y mantener, con muy poco mantenimiento.
La configuración de ejabberd (YAML) me gusta mas que prosody (Lua). Uso ejabberd con #PostgreSQL, prosody con "file storage".
Prosody ya tiene invitaciones, que me parece buenisimo:

#PinePhone (not pro) with #Mobian #trixie, so this must be #phosh 0.46.
I desperately miss an #OSM #maps app. Must support offline mode, must allow downloading areas (i.e. before travel), but doesn't need to have navigation features, if search is good. It's the only thing I miss after leaving Android years ago.

Ich zahle unterwegs, im Laden, in der Gastronomie immer nur mit #Bargeld. Um nicht in Probleme zu geraten, habe ich nie eine Kreditkarte o.ä. dabei, es sei denn ich gehe zum Geldautomaten. Tatsächlich konnte ich mit dieser "Ausrede" schon in mehreren Restaurants, die eigentlich kein Bargeld nehmen, doch damit bezahlen. Die Liebe zum #Digitalzwang war dann wohl doch nicht so groß, daß man mich eingeladen hätte 🙂

Unfortunately, public wifi and other badly configured #firewalls killed the concept of TCP ports. There is only one port left, that's 443 for everything.

Is there a #XEP specifying #crossSigning? I'm only aware of "XEP-0450: Automatic Trust Management (#ATM)".
Btw. the third option would be #OX instead of #OMEMO. One key per account, not per device. No problems with reading messages from #MAM with a new device. Dreaming is free.

I strongly suggest to run both xmpps-client and HTTP upload (and BOSH and websocket, if we are at it) all over 443.
No idea, if it would have helped in your situation, but it helped me a lot, e.g. in British trains.

It's absolutely OK to make such a compromise. I would not blame anyone for deciding to do so!
But IMHO, you argue in favour of federated messaging 🙂 If your friend uses gmail and you are on yahoo and somebody else does selfhost email, you can still communicate. You are on mstdn.social, I'm on framapiaf.org and we can communicate. This is the exact idea of #Jabber, too.
In contrast, WA, Signal etc. are closed silos forcing people to use a dozen of apps.

While the centralized nature of Signal and their 100 % dependency on Amazon AWS is the biggest disadvantage, there are more:
First class clients exist only for Google Android and Apple iOS. People who use an alternative OS (e.g. I'm on #Mobian) are excluded for now.
And their deciscion to base account ids on phone numbers is questionable at best.

Das grundlegendere Problem, dafür verantwortlich zu sein, ein funktionstüchtiges, elektronisches Device dabei haben zu müssen, wenn man die #BVG nutzen will, die man bereits zwangsweise bezahlt hat, bleibt leider. Eine Chipkarte o.ä. wäre die naheliegende Lösung 🤷

Signal as an easy-to-use and probably more secure WA replacement? Sure.
But for #digitalSovereignty we should go for something really free and federated, just like the fediverse. There are various options, of course. Each with pros and cons attached.
(My personal favourite is #Jabber, which exists since 1999 and is extremely easy to use thanks to #Quicksy and its Indian cousin #Prav.)

Sorry, if my non-mastering of Dutch is confusing me 🙂
If I understand correctly, you see a migration from WA to Signal as a move away from #BigTech and to more freedom. I disagree strongly.
Signal is probably more secure than WA and their team is much more trustworthy.
But it's involuted in big tech. It runs on the US Amazon cloud of Jeff B., it only works (fully) with Google Android and Apple iOS, and it even forces use of phone numbers as ids. That's not freedom in my book.

Für #xmpps empfehle ich immer *zwei* Ports:
443 mit hoher Priorität (hilft, wenn man im #WLAN eines britischen Zuges ist, aber auch in Hotels, Cafés, Flughäfen…)
5223 als fallback mit niedrigerer Priorität falls Non-HTTPS-over-443 geblockt wird, was ich aber selbst noch nie erlebt habe.
Auch HTTPS sollte daher über 443 laufen, nicht 5281, weil letzteres zu oft geblockt wird.
#nginx kann HTTPS und XMPPS uvam. unterscheiden und die TLS-Streams auf die korrekten Services leiten.

#Prose is an #XMPP client, but with the focus on team chats. Think of slack. Written in #Rust, for browser compiled to #WebAssembly. I tested it, and it looked great already. Still WiP, but as soon as they have A/V calls, I will propose it to all my colleagues!

Beide sind federiert und frei, keine geschlossenen Systeme wie Signal oder WA. Nimm das, was Dir eher zusagt 🙂
Ich nutze #Jabber schon länger als es Matrix gibt, warum also wechseln? Und es ist auch bzgl. Server-Ressourcen und benötigter Bandbreite sparsamer, somit besser für die #Umwelt.
Matrix nutze ich auch — mittels #XMPP gateway #slidge.

I'm using #Debian as my one and only desktop since mid-1990s. Right now Debian 12 #bookworm (stable) at work and Debian 13 #trixie (testing) at home. I do upgrades by "sudo apt full-upgrade" all the time ("sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" was the former variant). Works for me 🤷

I'm not convinced.
A cool name for #XMPP would be nice, but not yet another three or four letter acronym.
Worse, if people relate the new acronym to SMS or MMS, it does not reflect, what XMPP is capable of: A/V calls, group chats, message reactions, presence, encryption, micro blogging, file sharing etc.
Instead, I suggest to use a term from the 1650s with roots dating back to around 1400, meaning "talk rapidly and indistinctly": #Jabber.

I wonder, if Matrix is a good choice, if group chat history matters. My experience with large rooms is, that they need a regular "upgrade" procedure. I.e. old room is closed, everyone gets moved to a newly created one. No history is migrated.
#Jabber is not better, though. There is MUC-MAM, but it doesn't store everything forever. Best you can get is probably an external log.
