Pytaiko on my low‐latency troonix system really spoiled me. Last night I was playing the snoystation portable games which have insane latency and I was playing like a subhuman. They aren't even calibrated. Actually, I suspect that they intentionally made it buffer the audio to hell and back to try to synchronize the audio and video since the snoystation portable's screen was so slow. Of course, the correct way to go about this would have been to just add the ability to calibrate it, since that wouldn't impact audio latency, which is more important than video latency in rhythm games. This is a forced meme. On modern linsux systems (an oxymoron, of course) gnu is just the duct tape for miscellaneous scripts such as updating grub or setting up packages, an implementation detail that could be swapped out overnight with which normal users shouldn't have to interact.
Gnu is just a troonix clone, although only the userland is in a “usable” state. The name gnu literally means “Gnu is notUnix”, i.e. a cheap troonix clone. (To be fair, troonix is such garbage that cloning it faithfully would be a demerit. )
Although linsux is a troonix kernel clone, it's the only freetard kernel with serviceable hardware support and thus has no alternative.

There are cases where it's still useful to measure your system's latency. For example, in pytaiko I get 31ms more video latency than audio latency, so I can adjust the video offset to compensate. Of course, you can only compensate for things with predictable timing (i.e. not the player's inputs), so it's not as good as actually eliminating the latency, but it's still an improvement. The alternatives are tinkertrooning with the offset settings until it feels okay, or playing without having calibrated it and performing suboptimally.

I actually hate retroarch, but you won't find its latency mitigation features in most standalone emulators. It also saves me the effort of learning a gorillion different frontends since all emulators use a different one. Although retroarch is inadequate for anything beyond psx and n64.

I guess that what I appreciate about appimages is that they behave like normal executables instead of needing gay wrappers like flatpak applications do, so I can just dump them into *.local/bin*.
