Pytaiko on my low‐latency troonix system really spoiled me. Last night I was playing the snoystation portable games which have insane latency and I was playing like a subhuman. They aren't even calibrated. Actually, I suspect that they intentionally made it buffer the audio to hell and back to try to synchronize the audio and video since the snoystation portable's screen was so slow. Of course, the correct way to go about this would have been to just add the ability to calibrate it, since that wouldn't impact audio latency, which is more important than video latency in rhythm games. There are cases where it's still useful to measure your system's latency. For example, in pytaiko I get 31ms more video latency than audio latency, so I can adjust the video offset to compensate. Of course, you can only compensate for things with predictable timing (i.e. not the player's inputs), so it's not as good as actually eliminating the latency, but it's still an improvement. The alternatives are tinkertrooning with the offset settings until it feels okay, or playing without having calibrated it and performing suboptimally.

I pity people who are accustomed to playing with high latency because they do not know how good low latency feels, but at the same time I envy them because they can just enjoy the game without worrying about optimizing the latency. (There has to be a name for this feeling… I feel the same way about people who are accustomed to listening to music in low quality. )Anyway my monitor's latency is not particularly good, so it's only the audio latency that I've been able to ultra‐optimize (I'm a rhythmgamefag), and only on native troonix games since emulator developers always neglect the audio latency.

I actually hate retroarch, but you won't find its latency mitigation features in most standalone emulators. It also saves me the effort of learning a gorillion different frontends since all emulators use a different one. Although retroarch is inadequate for anything beyond psx and n64.
