Any entomologists on here? We have an ag entomologists in the community who left some traps here to put out in spring.
specifically, we're aiming to catch any bark beetles for identification. We had a scare in the late fall when we found some grubs in large rounds of Oak that were brought up here when we were splitting it. But it's really hard to get positive ID on grubs. All of that wood has been tarped and sealed up.
We're now looking at mid to high 70s and maybe even 80s and sunny this week. Would this trigger beetle emergence? Should I put the traps out now or wait another month?

The federal government is quietly purchasing warehouses for a massive expansion of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, according to documents posted online Friday by a Republican congressman. Additionally, a federal official said that California and New York are among the "next" for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge similar to the campaign in Minneapolis, with plans to embed hundreds of new ICE offices in Sacramento, Irvine, Santa Ana and Van Nuys, according to an explosive report by WIRED.
According to the WIRED report, ICE is leasing space in two Orange County cities — at an office park in Irvine and at the federal building in Santa Ana.
"This is news to me," Irvine Mayor Larry Agran told The Orange County Register. "We try to maintain some channels of communication with Border Patrol, with ICE, with Homeland Security... it's not easy to do. They're not very cooperative at all, and [not] letting us know what they're planning, what their activities consist of."
City officials are frequently unable to get details from ICE until a property sale is finalized.
The Irvine building, located at 2020 Main St., is situated near John Wayne Airport and several fast-casual restaurants. The Santa Ana Federal Building is located within blocks of a church and the OC Civic Center.
In Van Nuys — a neighborhood in Los Angeles — ICE is expanding offices at the James C. Corman federal building, that also houses offices for the IRS and Health and Human Services, the report said.
In San Diego, federal agents are allegedly leasing offices at the Edward J. Schwartz Courthouse and federal building, WIRED reported.
In Sacramento, ICE has installed security features at the John E. Moss building ahead of further expansion, according to WIRED.

From Government Executive magazine: The Social Security Administration has instructed employees newly assigned to answering phones to tell callers expressing suicidal thoughts that suicide is “one option,” raising concerns from employees and experts in the field who called the approach unorthodox.
SSA recently began shifting new swaths of its workforce to phone answering duty, including those who normally receive and process retirement and disability claims, manage the agency’s technology and work in the agency's finances unit. Those employees received brief, three-hour training before they began answering calls.
As part of that training, they were warned some callers may express suicidal ideation and presented with examples using a theoretical employee named Fiona.
“It's important for Fiona to keep the caller engaged and to remind her that suicide is only one option,” the animated trainer told employees in the video, a copy of which was obtained by Government Executive, “and that there is no urgency to make any decisions.”

So, to get noticed, deer mark areas with rubs and scrapes, known as signposts. To investigate how the environment might glow in response to animal behaviors, the lead author of the study, Daniel DeRose-Broeckert, and his colleagues surveyed an 800-acre area in the Whitehall Forest and located white-tailed deer’s (Odocoileus virginianus) active signposts.
The team marked those signposts with flagging tapes and GPS points. From the sites, they analyzed 109 antler rubs, 37 scrapes, and 20 urinated spots. The light measurements revealed that these markers emit light in wavelengths that stand out against the surrounding environment when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays.
In an interview DeRose-Broeckert told us that deer are more sensitive to blue wavelengths and UV light than humans. A deer’s eye sensitivity picks up the wavelengths emitted by the glow, i.e., 450-460 nm and 537 nm ranges. Also, deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when the sunlight is low and visible light fades, making ultraviolet wavelengths more prominent.

Finally getting around to doing the math for a sand battery...
My panels operating voltage and current are 38.6v and 8.44A. That means for one panel the ideal heating element would be 4.6 ohms. For 2 panels in series, 9.1 ohms.
The little immersion heater coil I got says it's 1000W at 110VAC. Which would mean 9.1A, and therefore be about 12.1 ohms. But the ohmmeter says it's 17.6 ohms.
That might be a bit high for the panels. hard to say what power point that will produce. Will just have to try.
If I were to power from my 25.6V batteries, and it's really a 17.6ohm element, that would only be 1.4A, so only 37W. So that's out.
The only other option with this element would be to keep it AC, and have the FM80 aux output programmed to open a relay to power it once the batteries reach float. On most days that'll be by 1p at the latest, and that gives me 4 hrs at 1kW of heat going into the sand for 4kWh of heat storage or about 13650BTU. That would probably be meaningful.

Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. So many people in #VanLife groups putting their lives at risk with their #Solar systems. The problem is inverter size vs system voltage. People are running 3500W and even higher wattage inverters on a 12V battery bank. That's 300A of current!! Not only do the wires need to be massive, expensive, and hard to negotiate around curves, but at those current levels you'd need to constantly monitor the torque on the connections and any heat build up in the wires.
Every connection is going to have some resistance. The higher the current the greater the voltage drop/heat build up through that resistance. This then causes thermal expansion/contraction which will loosen those connections resulting in even higher resistance and heat. Note the positive feedback loop. There's very little room for error at such high current levels. the same process can happen with a poor crimp.
12V is fine up to 2kW. 24V to 4kW. Anything above that and you should just go 48V.

Jones was staying in Room 428 at the Residence Inn by Marriott in North Portland and had called down to the front desk to report a malfunctioning toilet.
Christopher Frison, a chief maintenance engineer at the hotel, arrived at Jones’ room about 5 p.m. on July 27, 2020, and knocked several times. Frison also called out “maintenance,” gave his name and waited, holding a plunger, he testified in court.
That’s when “Jones opened the door ready to defend himself and his room,” according to U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson’s 22-page opinion.
According to Frison, Jones was wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head when he “swung” the hotel door open, reached with his right hand behind his back and suddenly pointed a handgun at Frison’s chest. He said Jones held his gun in two hands, both arms outstretched.

For more than two-thirds of the products we analyzed, a single serving contained more lead than CR’s food safety experts say is safe to consume in a day—some by more than 10 times. “It’s concerning that these results are even worse than the last time we tested,” said Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led the testing project.
Nearly all the plant-based products CR tested had elevated lead levels, but some were particularly concerning. Two had so much lead that CR’s experts caution against using them at all. A single serving of these protein powders contained between 1,200 and 1,600 percent of CR’s level of concern for lead, which is 0.5 micrograms per day. Two others had between 400 and 600 percent of that level per daily serving.
The lead levels in plant-based products were, on average, nine times the amount found in those made with dairy proteins like whey, and twice as great as beef-based ones. That is absolute fucking nonsense. The half life of nuclear waste ranges from 10,000 years to 1 million years. The HALF life. It is deadly without active containment requiring human intervention.
When climate change collapses our systems, who is going to maintain that active containment??? If humanity manages to survive, how are they to deal with it with far less resources? Will they even know what it is?
The time scale of this ticking bomb is so staggering that the Department of Energy had to develop a task force to try and figure out how to warn future generations. There was no written language 5,000 years ago. 1 million years ago, Neanderthals walked the earth.
If humanity and even other forms of life manage to survive the climate crisis, they will likely be wiped out by this ill-fated ineffectual attempt to mitigate it - currently every bit of nuclear energy that comes online immediately goes to new consumption by data centers hosting AI craziness.
Meanwhile, abandoned solar panels or wind turbines pose absolutely no danger to any life form. It's problematic, but solvable. Nuclear waste is not, and it's shortsighted to continue pursuing nuclear power until there is a solution to its millennia spanning waste problem.

Prohibitively expensive, with decommissioning/waste costs too often offloaded onto taxpayers after the utility has pocketed all the up front incentives and profits.
And the waste is a ticking time bomb bequeathed to future generations potentially every bit as damaging as the carbon time bomb prior generations bequeathed to us which nuclear advocates claim requires us to use it.
If viable and cost effective Thorium reactors become available that can use traditional nuclear waste as fuel to get rid of it, I may reconsider.

That's just it. Sodium Carbonate is the 6th most abundant element on earth 2.6% of the earth's crust. It's a very low impact to mine or extract - even from seawater. And the batteries can be made without copper or other rare, expensive, or toxic materials.
The lack of toxic materials means it's much cheaper & easier to recycle (although maybe the financial incentives won't be there - at least initially)
Compare that to rare, environmentally costly to mine lithium which is only 0.0017% of the earth's crust. Battery-grade lithium carbonate costs range from $10,000 - $11,000 per metric ton vs. $600 - $650 per metric ton of battery grade sodium carbonate. Lithium batteries are quite flammable leaving behind a toxic mess. Sodium ion batteries are quite stable and have a much wider operating temperature range. No more EVs petering out in cold temps.
