That *I* personally accomplish something is utterly meaningless. I could not safely conduct "routine" brain surgery, which has no bearing on its feasibility.
There are a *lot* of ways a malicious government could compromise all routing to root servers not under their control. Anycast addressing is dependent on ISPs collaborating, and few will prefer prison time to collaboration with the regime. The USA is uniquely positioned for hostile interference in this matter, *especially* on their own population (physical location doesn't matter if they still have trust & authority).
Though really, just blackholing all local traffic to the roots is sufficient to make the entire thing collapse locally. So *any* ISP is in a position to do that, which may even include just a single disgruntled employee in some cases.
Those physical servers can also be destroyed. Which again I cannot do, but various parties can.

It's annoying that a recent project of mine stalled.
Object Storage is all too often those huge ridiculous unwieldy codebases hard to audit or investigate properly.
So some people on some blogs say "why not use webdav, it should be more than enough for most small use-cases", which, indeed, on paper it should. So one goes to investigate, and finds that a lot of webdav servers are plainly broken and so are many of the clients, many failing something as basic as properly doing non-broken percent-encoding of paths & filenames (some of the servers fail too).
At this point the most reasonable option is probably writing a 9p client library or something. [diod](https://github.com/chaos/diod) at least works properly, even in unprivileged user mode.

Had an interesting dream.
Wasn't the only one, but it was the main noteworthy one.
Some kind of manor/non-euclidean space mix of a survival horror setting and detective setup.
Kind of setting where doors don't necessarily lead to the same places, or the same times (forward or backwards).

One thing about many of those awful anti-privacy laws is that they tend to be written such that they affect sites with a given number of users.
So currently, instances that limit themselves to a moderatable number of users (say 2⁰~1024) are completely unaffected.
That being said, pushing back against the laws *and* moving over to p2p and/or overlay networks should be considered the necessary and smart move.

Ongoing Java memory performance observations: Heap min/max free settings really do seem to be all that is necessary on top of the basic JVM improvements that have been made over the years for it not to use an unreasonable amount of memory.

It's (primarily) a NetNews [user agent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnus) built into GNU Emacs.
[Scoring](https://gnus.org/manual/gnus_90.html#Scoring) is essentially arbitrarily programmable sorting according to user-provided metrics & functions, with some reasonable default options built-in if one deems those adequate.
The user trains the program & their preferences as they use it (all of this is configurable), which helps for handling both information overload and mitigating undesirable content (moderation on Usenet wasn't always great).
There's some friction to it, but I haven't heard of much else providing Turing-complete sorting options to the users.

Making the kernel fungible/replaceable in distros would certainly be a good idea.
The fact both Debian and Gentoo once supported FreeBSD as a kernel provides some hope regarding this and its feasibility.
At the same time I'm very much not married to UNIX/POSIX so I'd be perfectly happy moving to something with a better architecture. (Unfortunately hardware support is a major hurdle for any such development.)

I think that the provisioning of systems onto the computer system should be disjoint from the definition of systems and their use.
In other words, ASDF is perfectly fine and I like it. How the ASDF systems get onto my computer however should not involve a language package manager because it's just inviting all sorts of practices that generally degrade reliability.

I'd be inclined to suggest using the archiving opportunity as one to also deprecate quicklisp, personally.
Language package managers just encourage bad practices and it's mostly CL's small and slow-moving community that prevented the worst results of those from coming about nearly as much as they have with other languages.
(This is on top of other reservations I have about quicklisp and the steps it takes to ensure integrity.)

Indeed, but that's a minor issue as Language-Based Security and Capabilities alike can achieve adequate isolation in a monolithic system.
Simply provide no unstructured direct access to memory to the language and system interfaces. Then *everything* has to operate with references as de-facto capabilities.
Same or greater performance can be achieved as a lot of the indirections necessary in weaker languages are obsoleted by this.
Microkernels are way to achieve that proper despite C's limitations.

Yeah, it's in-place modification that isn't needed and has no tools helping it (the C type system is not great, but it's actually possible to twist it into representing that usefully anyway).
Going by [anecdotal comments on the Orange Site](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47956312), that interface really didn't belong in the kernel to start with.
The recommendation to just disable it entirely sounds quite sensible.

Mostly you go to businesses that make custom e-bikes and you simply specify the kind of cells you want used in the battery they'll assemble for it.
(Of course this means you need one of the businesses that *also* does custom batteries.)
A lot of the off-the-shelf bikes assume a specific form-factor & connector shenanigans that can be a problem.
A lot don't, but given the weather here I'd need something that can has decent ingress protection, which means a plain container battery & connectors bolted onto the frame isn't an option, more care than just that is required.
(Obviously I'd store it inside, the bike and the battery, but it still needs to be able to cope with water & snow.)

I tend to check with `htop` what programs are now running without an equivalent available in the filesystem and restart only those.

Wifi is annoying to debug, because the whole notion of interference comes into play (unless you're rural or have no neighbors, I guess).
5Ghz wifi is *somewhat* better about it because it has such weak penetration through mass that cheap walls (it also has a fairly short reach) will practically prevent interference from being a consideration (and will also mean you need an AP a room to have adequate signal).

Regarding the controller & server, you can automate that. From my configuration...

It would be difficult with the original. The eZ80 would be painfully slow but feasible.
In general, I think an alternative needs to be able to run modern encryption in some way or other.
Of course some manner of "shield" or other hardware providing the feature for weaker machines is also possible, it would need to become something of an off-the-shelf component though to not fall into abusable patterns once more.
