okay figured it out.
with zero tweaks to anything, my 5750GE is idling with a package power between 5.25 and 6.25 watts, roughly. the tool I'm using ('turbostat') seems to think that's at between 3.2 and 3.6 GHz give or take, with all cores mostly idle.
this is useful, I eventually plan to decrease the base clocks on all these little 35W machines of mine to save some power, not just the Dell with the USB-PD decoy power dongle...

Debian 13 has btop 1.3.2 and I am finding that whoever develops btop only builds binaries for musl and not glibc 🙄
I have another way to get various power info but I gotta look it up, and I don't believe I've yet tried it on my AMD box

in fact, one of the selling points of starting back out with PHP on the web app side is the low barrier to entry. I like Python a lot more than PHP (yes I know it doesn't scale™ and the ecosystem is a mess but I *enjoy writing it*) but it's undeniably a higher barrier to entry. I started with LAMP over 25 years ago and it really is dump files in a directory and go at its most simple. maybe that's due to the decades of experience, but the end result is the same either way.

when it comes to mobile development, I have written zero (0) bytes of code, ever, which have run on a mobile device, not counting in browser.
I've also decided that I'll stick with Android (until such time as Linux phones are further along) because I just don't have the money or the mental bandwidth or the desire to fuck with iOS.
unfortunately, starting out with Android development seems to require climbing a high mountain at first re: getting tools and such set up.

additional background:
back when I had a "career," I did mostly backend web app dev, most of that on horrifying PHP codebases, a bit on Django but that was when I was already close to burnout. I was also better at front end than most engineers in similar roles, but that was like 15 years ago and front end is way different now.
web apps is what I know. but I want to get into mobile development because I'm convinced it's a good fit for my mind and its various quirks.

I need projects which won't overwhelm me and lead to shutdown + abandonment, which leads to tentative conclusions:
* stick to PHP for web apps at first :(
* find existing projects with a high itch-to-scratch factor to contribute to, which will naturally suck me back in when I stray
* this is especially true for Android which has an awful brick wall to scale when it comes to dev tools

it's got semantic "awareness" (using that term very loosely and not to imply cognition or consciousness). my understanding is that one of the hardest problems in computer science - semantic categorization of data - was partly solved by emergent properties of the network architecture they're using.
I don't really understand it much better than that, but it does appear that over time parts of the network tune themselves to be highly sensitive to very specific semantic concepts.

I've barely engaged with it thus far and am committed to doing so deliberately and thoughtfully, but the people saying it's 100.0% a useless scam are engaged in ideology-first thinking.

noticed a new clue with the "my timeline hangs at the loading spinner forever on multiple instances" bug in 3.35.1
if I search a hashtag on an instance where that is currently happening and then tap a hashtag to display results, it will also hang at the loading spinner forever
edit: it looks like it doesn't hang forever, it's just that the loads are really really slow (several minutes) when the instances work normally via the web browser.

after a little more testing:
* timeline loaded right away in 1 of 4 mastodon accounts, 1 of 1 Akkoma accounts
* upon switching back to an account where timeline previously managed to load, it can revert to spinning forever again
* sometimes timeline will load after doing something such as posting a toot
* accounts displaying the issue load fine in browser

I do think that one thing getting glossed over in the bcachefs kerfuffle is that the guy is probably right about #btrfs having remaining reliablity problems - granted I didn't go digging that hard, but I haven't found anywhere where the ~5 year old papers on btrfs becoming unrecoverable in many more underlying data corruption situations than ext4 was addressed, and certainly not with "many of those cases have been fixed."

I think people are going to keep reporting this as a bug until we think of some way to show in the UI that the toots in question are not "fully loaded"
in other words, the icons shouldn't look normal in the case of remote fetched toots, because if they do, then users will expect them to behave normally

every single month I have to shepherd the prescriptions I've been taking for nearly a decade thru the glorious American health care system, and every single month somebody whose job it is to get those pills into my hands without interruption fucks it up. as a result, every single month my dwindling reserve of medication which I maintain for the purposes of buffering me against the life-altering impacts of other people's lack of care & concern grows smaller.
I'm now down to about a week.

so as part of quitting slumming on reddit, yesterday I went thru and found some Lemmy-adjacent communities. I already had the Thunder and Voyager clients installed on my phone, so as I use those I'll figure out which I like best.
it's still pretty small, with fairly fragmented communities, in that a given topic might have 6 communities on various instances, 4 or 5 of which are completely or mostly dead. #threadiverse
