Routstr Core v0.4.0: With Open Nostr Analytics
Major Changes:
1. Open Analytics:
Routstr nodes now periodically share combined usage stats on Nostr.
(Enabled by default, can be disabled in the settings)

We've done 1.2M sats in volume this month across 7 nodes. Just getting started, we're optimistic that we'll grow this 10x and 100x in the near future.
2. Child Keys:
Teams can now manage apikeys and child keys for their teams on using a single upstream like api.routstr.com (Platform UI still in beta, pls report bugs: https://beta.platform.routstr.com).
3. Admin Dashboard Redesigned:
Now it's slicker with fewer bugs. Thanks to @npub1u37…w8vy our UI wizard. Helping you manage your models and upstreams better.
4. Routstr Node Upstreams:
You can now add other Routstr nodes as upstream and your node will pay for other nodes with lightning/cashu. api.routstr.com will be doing only Routstr node upstreams going forward, you can use this as your base URL easily.
5. X-Cashu Caching:
A long awaited feature where x-cashu refunds are caching for a while before the node deletes them. If the user forgets to store refunds, you won't lose funds.
Plus other minor improvements and bug fixes.
Please upgrade your nodes by pulling the latest from main and run `docker compose up --build -d`.

You don't need ecash at all, we fully support lightning topups. You can use routstr without ever having to manage your ecash. It uses eCash in the background but fully compatible with lightning.

We are almost done with a beta version of Routstr SDK (https://github.com/Routstr/routstrd), this will allow us to remove the need for Cashu balance on Routstr and api key balance.
We can build a system where you enter you Alby LNURL into Routstr to periodically receive refunds to it. And when needed it'll automatically pull from your NWC. This will eliminate the need for keeping balance for longer than necessary with Cashu/nip-60.

Yes, we have our nip-60 wallet in our chat app. It serves a very good purpose of a wallet that can live on any app, any cli, or anywhere you have javascript.
It's not a solution looking for a problem. If it wasn't for NIP-60, we coudln't have built our chat app that you can use on multiple devices.

Yes, you can easily hook up Routstr and an agent to fill a UI improvement request for say 800 sats. Just zap an agent/pay lightning invoice and have it deployed in 2 mins.

It will materialize. Cashu is the best way to build apps with portable wallets in there. NIP-60 works great. We just need more abstractions. :)

This is incredible feedback. Thank you so much for doing this and using Routstr.
Yes, I get how it is confusing for people not used to Lightning/Cashu/NIP-60. We'll work on improving this UX.
We have thought about NWC being the primary source of funds. But it'd mean there's more delay as every transaction is an NWC -> Cashu -> Swap and also, the way pay per request works right now requires the current set up because for any model you're sending more than what it'd cost, like 2100 sats for GPT-5.3-Chat and you'll get 1950 sats back as you just spent 150 sats. This requires a wallet.
Also, the reason why you signed Nostr events there is because we use a nip-60 wallet in the chat app, which stores your cashu in Nostr relays. This makes the app/balance available on multiple devices.
We'll work on abstracting away all of this complexity from the user. cc: @npub1u37…w8vy
Sorry about such a delayed response, I'll setup my agent to check Nostr for mentions of this account (I check my personal). I've been busy these past few days working on Routstr SDK (https://github.com/Routstr/routstrd) a daemon that runs on your machine and integrates itself with OpenCode, OpenClaw, etc. The benefit is that if one node goes down it automatically switches to the next one. And also that different nodes are better for different models. With built in Nostr features.

we don’t have a privacy policy because we don’t store/read any data, you can check the source code
maybe we should just add it to say that
the benefit over open router is that the payment layer is completely anonymous so even if a malicious provider collects data, he doesn’t see any users so every request is separated and also can’t be linked to any particular person except you put precisely identifying information into your prompt
we’re also working on a local version that prechecks your requests and straps out identifying information automatically

to start a routstr provider you need to run the docker compose in the repository so you can git clone and build yourself or you pull the container from ghcr and run it, you also need to setup some environment variables for the settings so you can check the .env.example in the repository.
no personal mint is required you can choose mints that you trust, by default minibits

With this stable release, anyone can run Routstr nodes and help decentralize AI access to anyone, anywhere on earth!
Come run a Routstr node and serve models from OpenAI, Anthropic, x-ai, Google, Replicate, or OpenRouter (charges 5% extra) to anyone on the open internet and earn Bitcoin via Cashu/Lightning.
With v0.1.0, we made Routstr incredibly stable, but this is still a Beta version. If you come across a problem, we’d appreciate it if you report the bug to us on our Github.
Along with making Routstr more robust, we added these new features to Routstr:
1. Multiple Cashu Mint Support: Users and nodes don’t need to use the same mint
2. Multi-Currency Support: Sat and msats are both supported right now

We made a bad decision: Running our own Nip60 implementation. its causing our production environment to run instable. Maybe you experience some issues with routstr in the the recent weeks, we lost funds, early adopters did, we are really sorry.
Its not a problem of cashu, its not a problem with nostr, we are just so early.

routstr itself does not accept lightning if you did a top up then the cashu mint created an invoice, most likely minibits which is the default in our cashu wallet
also just tested this and all works normal so not sure what exactly went wrong :/

there are multiple ways to implement routstr
using api keys from the setting in the chat app is the easiest and similar to ppq
using a cashu wallet and cycling tokens for every request is the best for privacy and self custody but more complicated, we’ll release an sdk soon

you can now create api keys that are pre filled with a balance (stored at provider side) that can be used in other applications like cursor so you can top up the balance without needing to change the cashu token always

we just spend 120k SATs to create this new cashu nip60 implementation in python
120k SATs because claude4 opus in cursor costs a lot
we needed this internally to improve the proxy implementations so why not publish it as separate library

we needed to implement new restrictions to tge proxy to not lose money so there is now a minimum sat size requirement depending on the model you wanttoo use but we haven't fixed this in the frontend yet so sorry for that but should be fixed asap

One single request to Claude 4 Opus can cost $5,4 at context and completion maxed out. (~5k sats)
Before the request there is no way to estimate the cost so we are required to implement a minimum balance that you need to put in your cashu token to be able to use the model.
This cost varies by model so for example
Gemini 2.5 Flash has a maximum cost of
$0.2 ~180 sats
