Richard Feynman's Courage To Stand Up To "Faster, Better, Cheaper" Capitalism at NASA
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster was a major space tragedy that occurred on 28 January 1986, when NASA’s Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch, killing all seven astronauts on board.
Important Context:
The Challenger explosion was not a mystery. It was a known engineering flaw covered up by a broken bureaucracy.
Months before the launch, engineers at Morton Thiokol knew the solid rocket boosters had a critical issue. The rubber O-rings meant to seal the booster joints were eroding on previous flights.
On the night before the January launch, temperatures in Florida plummeted. The engineers pleaded with NASA to scrub the mission. They knew cold rubber would turn brittle and fail to hold back the hot gas.
NASA management pushed back. A senior executive infamously told his lead engineer to take off his engineering hat and put on his management hat. The launch proceeded simply to hit a PR timeline.
When physicist Richard Feynman joined the investigation commission, he refused to sit through sanitized PowerPoint presentations. He went straight to the floor engineers.
Feynman discovered a massive gap in reality. NASA bosses were claiming the risk of failure was 1 in 100,000. The engineers building the parts knew the real risk was closer to 1 in 100.
Feynman decided to cut through the spin on national television. He bought a basic C-clamp from a Washington hardware store.
During a televised hearing, he clamped a piece of the O-ring rubber and dropped it into a glass of ice water. When he pulled it out, the rubber stayed flat. It had lost all its resilience in the cold.
That single visual proved exactly why the shuttle blew up. It also proved NASA management was ignoring basic physics.
NASA was forced to ground the space shuttle fleet for nearly three years. They had to completely overhaul their hardware and their culture.
Engineers redesigned the boosters with internal heaters to keep the rubber warm in any weather. They added a third O-ring and changed the metal joints so launch pressure would force them closed rather than pry them apart.
The most important fix was institutional. Investigators realized NASA suffered from the "normalization of deviance." Because previous flights with damaged rings had survived, management started treating a warning sign as an acceptable risk.
To stop this, NASA created a protected dissenting opinion process. From then on, any engineer could raise a red flag or halt a launch without fear of being fired.
Feynman had to fight to get his unedited criticisms included in the final report. They were published as Appendix F.
His closing thought in that document remains a hard rule for anyone working in tech or aviation today.

"New England Women’s Solidarity (NEWS), a feminist organization, is sending a letter to Gov. Janet Mills (D-Maine) criticizing her for attacking Graham Platner’s comments about rape victims while housing violent trans-identifying men in women’s prisons.
“We’d like Mills to address the discrepancy between her criticism of Graham Platner’s past comments on rape victims & her refusal to acknowledge incarcerated Maine women who say they’re being sexually abused by male inmates,” said NEWS co-director Jennifer Gingrich on X.
“We struggle to understand why your concern about the sexual abuse of women doesn’t extend to those who are incarcerated. You continue to ignore the cries of women like the many inmates at the Maine Correctional Center who say they are being harassed, groped, and threatened with sexual violence by sexually intact trans-identifying male convicts,” said the letter to Gov. Mills.
NEWS highlighted the hypocrisy of Mills’ campaign advertisements criticizing Platner’s comments about rape victims. While Platner’s statements were just that, merely statements, Mills’ policies have actually placed women at risk of sexual assault.
The letter revealed that NEWS reached out weeks ago, requesting that Mills meet to discuss the women suffering abuse in the state’s prisons, but the governor allegedly ignored the request.
The issue of trans-identifying inmates in Maine returned to prominence after The Maine Wire published the account of inmate Katie Mountaine, who described the alleged threats and sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Andrew Balcer.

Balcer is a six-foot-one, 310 lb. man who murdered both his parents and the family dog with a knife. After his conviction and incarceration, he announced that he would be identifying as a woman.
Mills and Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) Commissioner Randall Liberty allowed Balcer to move into housing with women, where he has allegedly shared a cell and even a bed with female inmates.
On Wednesday, The Maine Wire spoke with Rep. Mike Soboleski (R-Philips) outside the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, where both Balcer and Mountain are housed.
He talked about his meeting with Mountain and his recent meeting with U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine Andrew Benson regarding the upcoming investigation into Maine for potentially violating the constitutional rights of female inmates by forcing them to share living space with males."

"The US government spent 30 years trying to prove that a group of lesbian bikers was "too scandalous" to legally exist.
In 1976, a small group of women on motorcycles rolled to the front of the San Francisco Pride Parade, and a journalist jokingly dubbed them the "Dykes on Bikes." The name was instant lightning; it was loud, it was tough, and the community loved it.

The battle became so intense that the group had to conduct massive nationwide surveys to "prove" to government officials that the public wasn't actually offended by them. They gathered thousands of letters from supporters around the world, creating a paper trail of pride that the Trademark Office couldn't ignore.
In 2005, after nearly 30 years of being told their identity was "too dirty" for a government stamp, they finally won. They didn't just get a trademark; they forced the federal government to admit that a community has the right to define itself.

In 2003, Dykes on Bikes sought to federally trademark their name to prevent commercial exploitation—specifically, a Wisconsin woman planning to launch a clothing line called Dykes on Bikes. They believed their long-standing public use of the name would ensure approval.
However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected the application, deeming the term “dyke” “vulgar,” “scandalous,” and “disparaging” to lesbians under the Lanham Act. This decision sparked a multi-year legal battle, despite the fact that the USPTO had previously approved trademarks like Whore, Evil Pussy, and Biker Bitch.
Founding member Soni Wolf stated: “That word has been used for years to tear us down. And we said, ‘OK, we’re going to take it back.’” The group viewed the rejection not as protection, but as government overreach into their right to self-identify.
In July 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit dismissed his lawsuit, ruling that men had no legal standing to be offended by a term referring to women. The court affirmed that the government should not police language reclamation within marginalized communities.

While making its exit, the bee gets covered in pollen. It flies off, a little confused, a little betrayed, and immediately falls for the same trick again at another pink lady's slipper.
