for one, it actively embraces AI slop now
but also: it is set up in a monolithic way that locks you into the ecosystem by having a bunch of tightly coupled tools that didn't need to depend on each other, so a lot of power is concentrated in one place, and when there is a problem (like the AI slop) people suddenly need to replace things like their container orchestration tool just to be able to use a different init system. this is a liability.
systemd has gone so far as to absorb existing foss projects that were working perfectly fine on their own into its tree. that's a pretty dark pattern imo.

openrc is a fully featured service manager with service files, dependency management, runlevels, parallel boot, user services etc.
of course it doesn't do any of the things that aren't within the scope of a service manager, like acting as a DNS cache or a bootloader, but there are other great tools for that and having a more modular setup is literally a good thing

I specifically disagree that hobby kernels can turn into a serious project quickly. There are ambitious projects like SerenityOS or RedoxOS but it will probably take decades for them to become anywhere near as viable for daily driving as Linux for most people. I have tried them. I have also run Plan9/9front on bare metal for quite some time. This isn't a non-issue. Just like we have failed to cultivate alternative browsers to Chromium over the years, and now Mozilla is going slop and there is nothing left besides projects that, alternatives again will take years to be anywhere near completion (Servo, and in theory Ladybird which is fashware and also slop).
FreeBSD is already a serious project, and as you have said, has been for years. I do agree with that. But FreeBSD is a mere two years younger than Linux. Having a very limited number of alternatives simply isn't great, and FreeBSD doesn't have an explicit policy against AI either/yet.

yea, so does my own kernel cuddlesOS. can it do even 1% of the things most people do on their computers? a viable OS is not just something that can boot and run a few programs, lol. also this is technically wrong; templeOS does not run on arm64 or 64-bit riscv or loongarch, it is specifically amd64.
the issue is with drivers for all different kinds of hardware, like wifi, bluetooth, usb, gpus, sound, storage technologies, graphics ports, and so much more; as well as efficient scheduling, memory management, modern file systems, network stacks, security, event interfaces, virtualization etc. etc.. I don't think you realize how messy these things are and just how many dev hours go into developing them. a lot of the hardware is completely undocumented and the only reference you have is linux kernel code from the vendor or people who reverse engineered it. there are even instances of straight up proprietary drivers that were only provided for linux for which you have to clone the linux kernel interfaces to support them.

this was 25 years ago and the situation has only gotten worse.
there is an insane amount of standards and hardware an operating system needs to support to be realistically viable, and the reason that linux has these things is because it started at an age where the field was simply different and then was developed continuously with huge amounts of enterprise and hobby support for decades into what it is today.
no, this is not something a competent hacker can pull out of their ass anymore.

Plan 9 is a research OS from the 90s that does not support GPUs or modern web browsers; GNU Hurd only just recently got 64 bit cpu support; Zircon is an embedded kernel by a slop megacorp famous for dropping projects.
Of these, only FreeBSD is a serious alternative, and perhaps Illumos but I don't know much about it.

i don't think ethics are conceptually bad or should be avoided altogether. there's a bourgeois version of everything. there's a clothing industry and an entertainment and art industry, a porn industry. all of these cause harm and suffering with how they are implemented in our society. yet none of these things are bad per se, they are all things that can be beautiful and enriching. but the question is whose interests they serve. i think ethics are fundamentally very useful, but they can, like almost anything, be used to perpetuate and protect the interests of a small ruling class at the expense of everyone else.
i think deriving ethics from first principles is not very useful for two reasons, first of all ethics are far to expansive and complex to be described by a few simple rules, and secondly most people who try this fail to account for the fact that they are not infinitely wise and cannot derive an entire field from scratch without prior input. usually attempts at doing so come across as uncalibrated at best and vastly contradicting common sense at worst. i think ethics are much better described by thinking and learning about it on a case by case basis than by abstract description.
imagine you don't know what a cat is and have to draw one. would you rather someone describe to you how a cat looks like, what physical features it has, etc. or show you a bunch of different pictures of cats in different poses to demonstrate the concept? it's the same with ethics.

if ethics aren't class conscious they are basically wholly useless to me, for me a poor person stealing food will never be unethical, and a landlord evicting a tenant will never be ethical, and intellectual property will never be ethical either.

ok so you're basically not even allowed to travel to a different country with ADHD meds that last longer than 30 days? so what the hell do i do if i need to stay longer? you also can't use a prescription for ADHD meds obtained in one EU country in another, even tho that _can_ work for medication that is not classifed as Betäubungsmittel (narcotics).

using IDEs for what is essentially code generation isn't great, same if you have your IDE generate a lot of Java boilerplate or whatever and think that is a good solution. because you're not distributing the source, i.e. what you entered into your computer to create the program, but an already processed version of it, the output of another program. this is the easiest way to get unmaintainable spaghetti. it's obviously a spectrum and maybe fine for html but the philosophy of moving compilation/language tasks to the editor irks me

europe so far has mostly engaged economic imperialism (ex: france controlling the currency of west african countries), small scale operations (ex: france murdering thomas sankara) or played a secondary role in US-led military operations (ex: invasion of iraq, occupation of afghanistan) and have mostly avoided getting their hands dirty militarily (besides the US, they also pay morocco to murder immigrants in the mediterranean). however this may soon change; and honestly that's a change for the worse. the world does not need 2 violent bully superpowers instead of 1.

I feel like paradoxically any setup (not even just tech) geared specifically towards dating is bad for finding someone you truly vibe with.
Meeting someone in a casual context gives you a way better idea of who they are as a person (and if it's a hobby context, it also means there are shared interests already) than a context where they specifically try to present themselves as a conventionally attractive partner.

i would like to clarify I do not own a car. but I'm also lucky live in a place where public transit is only semi shit and I know that this is sadly not the case everywhere so some people need one. i just got a bit angry at something i guess read into your statement that isn't there
