My last asthma attack was when I was 19. I'm 45 now. I've been fortunate enough that I don't need medication anymore.
But as a child, I experienced asthma so regularly and so severely that I assumed it was how I was going to die — gasping for breath until my last. That's an awfully heavy thought for a child to bear.
We had a gas stove. Ironically, I prefer cooking over a real flame, but my asthma was always worse around it. When I asked my doctor, he said it was all in my head.
Even as a kid, I made the connection. But when I spoke up, adults dismissed me with, "That's just you," as if it wasn't even worth considering.
Now there’s a study.
Decades later, seeing the science catch up to what a terrified, wheezing kid already knew is both validating and maddening.
It’s infuriating that the adults responsible for keeping me safe so easily dismissed a child’s direct observation as imagination. "It's all in your head" was just a convenient way to avoid listening, or worse, admitting that the family stove was hurting me.
I still appreciate cooking over a real flame. But whenever I see a gas burner lit today, I don't just see heat — I see a stark reminder of how easily children’s voices are brushed aside, and how long it took for the world to admit the obvious.

If you are running a version of either Misskey or Mastodon that is more than a year old, I strongly urge you to reconsider your reasons for not upgrading.
This low-effort exploit (see screenshot) can be executed on Mastodon 4.0.x through 4.3.x. If you are still running Mastodon 2.x or 3.x, the situation is significantly worse.
⚠️ This isn't just a Mastodon issue; it affects Misskey too. If you are using a version of Misskey older than 2025, you have simply been lucky so far.
For context, the current version of Mastodon is 4.5.11 (with 4.6 beta 1 available), and the current version of Misskey is 2026.5.4 (with 2026.6.0 available). There is no better time to upgrade than right now. ⏳

I've never had a problem with admitting that I am wrong, because I see it as an opportunity to grow, learn, and change. I wish more people shared that mindset — instead, we have these people who, when given factual information, will double down and triple down, insisting their "logic" is undeniable.
For example, six years after the COVID-19 pandemic, we still have people claiming it was and remains a hoax. It is the same mindset that argues we've never been to the moon, the world is flat, and human society is 2,000 years old or less, despite all the facts that disprove their delusions.
You'd think the Internet, this wonderful tool granting people virtually unlimited information and knowledge, would uplift society.
And yet, it has largely become a hall of mirrors. Instead of using it to find the truth, people use it to find the one other person on the planet who agrees with their specific brand of delusion, effectively insulating themselves from reality. It has proven that the bottleneck for human progress isn't a lack of information — it’s the ego. We haven’t used the internet to sharpen our minds, instead we’ve used it to weaponize our biases.
The Internet has mostly served to prove that you can lead a person to data, but you can't make them think.

Corporations when they have the financial resources play the long game.
You think people actually like the complicated and costly policies of Adobe? Of course they do not.
But many schools, including universities are given free and discounted Adobe access. Those people then go to work where business originally were also given special access years ago.
Now you have all these people hooked on Adobe, no matter how costly or annoying it becomes. Fearful that switching will mean they'll be excluded somehow.
These types of corporations play the long game. And what seems insane today, is standard tomorrow.

Actually, it does make sense.
Apple Computer, was losing money rapidly, but gave schools free or discounted Apple PCs for decades. People said that doing so made no financial scenes.
Today, all those kids are grown and use Apple devices at home.
(Honestly, I didn't see a PC in a school until I was in high school.)
Microsoft is going to shove Microsoft 365 onto users, including OneDrive. Your kids will see this. You'll use this because your work will require it, and your kids will see you use it whenever you bring work home. And just like Apple, they're already trying to give this to schools too.
The same way Google saved Chromebooks during the pandemic, giving free and discounted Chromebooks to schools, and now a whole generation wants to use Chromebooks.

Modern Edge identifies itself as Chromium, as do most Chromium forks (Vivaldi included, unless you change that in the settings). I think they’re measuring legacy Edge, which actually has a following — particularly among people who refused to upgrade. If true, this may tell you just how far Firefox has fallen.

I have seen a draft of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech.
It was only a draft, so it may not reflect the final message he delivers tomorrow.
But the draft implied that we might be leaving NATO, citing how NATO “wrongfully” threatened us when we demanded Greenland. It further suggests that Europe is not serious about global defense. I get that you want to lock everything down, but I feel the user should have the choice and understand the risk when adding browser extensions. One of the reasons why I stuck with Android, was Apple always presumed they knew best for everyone. Give people choices.

Vivaldi Social was one of the first sites to update to Mastodon 4.5.
My post is intended more as a general notice for anyone still using an older version of Mastodon. There are quite a few sites running very outdated versions of both Mastodon and Misskey. In fact, recently, a Fediverse site was hacked because it continued to use old software. I hope that with this release, more people will avoid the mistake of ignoring the update.

So, you’ve actually just supported an argument I made a while back — that the Fediverse needs AI. I first made this point during the major spam attack that hit the Fediverse last year.
Here’s why: if the goal is to grow the Fediverse, registration can’t be invitation-only. Right now, Fediverse software isn’t as user-friendly as mainstream platforms like Reddit, Twitter, or Facebook. Making it even more exclusive would only slow growth further, or even stop it internally.
I say this from experience. I remember how online forums tried to handle spam, bots, and trolls — by making registration harder. Some required manual review or moderator approval. That worked for a while, but it also made those communities less welcoming and more difficult to join. Over time, most forums faded away.
At the same time, keeping registration completely open invites bad actors, trolls, and spam. It’s a tough balance — too open, and the space gets toxic; too closed, and it stops growing. That’s exactly where AI could help: by automatically handling spam, filtering bad behavior, and letting real users in without creating unnecessary barriers.

In one photo, from Facebook (my job, where I work), we had a woman claiming to be a 36-year-old mother of two children, ages 4 and 7. She spaced out the URL in her post, hoping it wouldn’t get flagged by spam filters (it did). The very next day, someone on the Fediverse posted the exact same message, with the same URL. The only differences were that they used a different name, a different profile photo, and claimed to be a 19-year-old girl.

Regular Fedora is not hard to set up, if you are willing to take the time and add some 3rd party repos (RPM Fusion, for example, for non-free media codecs).
