If we don't read it at all, we also don't learn how our opponents see the world, or what they are thinking.

I'm currently reading a text which has been scanned using rather primitive optical character recognition from an old book, which is mostly in English but includes many French inclusions. The OCR has properly mangled every French word that uses diacritical marks.
I'm quite surprised how well I'm managing to reconstruct the French text from this mess — my ability to read French is far better than I expect it to be.

I don't, really. What I'm trying to do is, locally around myself, helping build capacity in the community so that when the state collapses we will have the skills and resources to cope.
That's what I would advise others to do: build lifeboats, because the ship is certainly going to sink.
There will be people in Britain in one hundred years time, I expect, although I don't know how many. There won't be a United Kingdom and I don't think there will be a Scotland or an England.

People all over #Gaza are hungry. Most of the people I am in touch with have eaten nothing but grains and wild herbs — weeds — for weeks. This isn't sustainable. Soon, there will be many children dying.
Giving isn't a long term solution. Only major political change can offer a long term solution. But without voluntary giving, many of the vulnerable will not survive until then.

As I say, we all help in our different ways, as we are able.
In the end, the most important thing is not giving money. The most important thing is stopping the war. Only political action -- pressure on our own politicians, within our own countries, to put pressure on Israel -- will stop the war.
But giving money will keep some people alive while we get that done.

This doesn't work, Asar.I currently donate about £85 each week. Each payment I make, there is a charge made by the payment handlers. If I made many small payments, most of my money would go in those payments to the handlers, and very little would reach people in Gaza. So I make payments of £25 (about 100 Shekels).

A just peace is unlikely to be achieved by anything that the Palestinians can do by themselves. Just peace required Israel to be persuaded or forced to cease acting criminally.
The international community *could* apply that pressure, but without widespread support from electorates across the world it won't.
Terrorism by Palestinians reduces sympathy for the Palestinian cause internationally, and is thus counter-productive.

The ultimate question here is what is likely to achieve a stable, just peace. One can understand the anger of the Palestinians. I have Palestinian friends who are very angry. The anger is justified.
But what they need is a state in which they can live, work, cultivate their land, practice their religion, celebrate their festivals and govern themselves in peace and security.
Will violence achieve that? It's hard to see how.

But it's very easy for violence to spread. Are Hamas justified in attacking Israeli civilians? After all, undoubtedly, Zionist terrorists started the cycle of violence in Palestine.

Violent revolutions rarely or never lead to improved conditions for the ordinary people; they are normally hijacked by the most ruthless and most vicious.
Radical social change is a genuinely hard problem to which I don't have any fast-enough solutions; but widespread violence should be an absolute last resort because it is so likely to make things worse.
Note: property damage is not 'violence'.

#Israel has deliberately bombed and destroyed the hospitals of #Gaza; they have deliberately and selectively murdered surgeons, doctors, other medical staff, even ambulance crews. They deliberately restrict the medicines and medical supplies that are allowed in.
The population of Gaza are suffering starvation, which leads to poor immune systems. Disease is rife, as well as injuries caused by war. Many need help.

The Guardian has published a new map of the #Gaza yellow line. You can see that #Israel has now seized more than half of the entire strip. But this is also the very substantial majority of all Gaza's agricultural land.
This means that even if peace is restored, Gaza cannot feed itself unless Israel withdraws.
This is, in effect, a giant #ConcentrationCamp.

In Scotland, we have not seen war in eighty years. It's very distant from us. It's hard for us to relate to the experience of war — we have nothing in our lives to which we can compare it. But the people whose lives are torn apart by war are people just like us, ordinary people, who, before war came, had ordinary lives and ordinary hopes; and now live in hunger and fear among ruins.

There are some things we wouldn't implement in the same way now. Active values, for example, should have transactional locking like #Clojure atoms. But on the whole, from memory, I think that Loops was the best object-oriented extension for a #Lisp that I've seen, and the API could generally be reimplemented now without looking at all retro or clunky.

So yes, I strongly think there SHOULD be an inquiry into what went wrong in the #SNP over the past fifteen years. Not a parliamentary enquiry which would simply devolve into a political point scoring exercise, but an enquiry commissioned by the SNP but held in public and led by a trusted individual who is not a party member.

Aren't #liberal politicians everywhere much the same on this?
It's not hypocritical. The core of the liberal ideology is the inviolability of private property and the perfect wisdom of the market. It's clear that the wealthy are those favoured by the market, so obviously it must be wise to favour those same people?
(This is a major part of why I believe that liberalism is fundamentally incompatible with democracy).

rural Scots mainly emigrate when young for lack of housing or to earn better wages (and consequently pay taxes where they move to); people who immigrate to Scotland mainly do so when old, in search of better amenity.
The net flows may balance, but the flows of tax revenue do not, I believe.

One of the real problems we have here in the rural west of Scotland is people retiring from the cities, who have not paid council tax locally, and may not have paid income tax in Scotland, throughout their working lives, now depending on health and social care here in their expensive old age.
There's a real subsidy here from the poor to the rich -- one of many, of course; but it is a problem.

London is more than twice the total for Scotland and Wales together; but, London has a larger population than Scotland and Wales put together. South West England, which probably doesn't, also has a larger IHT contribution. Those figures would be more interesting if normalised by population.
However, I don't believe this captures the full stratification of wealth in the UK. The fifty richest families are said to hold more wealth than 50% of the population.

2. They go for an extra-parliamentary strategy — civil disobedience, switching off the cross-border interconnector, national strikes, et cetera.
