I lived in NYC for 8 years, so I know both systems firsthand. I’m lucky to now live in Tuscany, where we have excellent doctors and modern healthcare facilities. 🏥🇮🇹
But there’s a paradox: for many things, especially when I need scans or fast results, I still have to go private.
So in some cases, I’m effectively paying twice for healthcare — through very high taxation and then again privately to get timely services.The Italian system has many strengths, but there is plenty of room for efficiency and improvement. And with a tax burden that can approach 65% for some workers/business situations, it’s fair to ask where all that money is going.😱

🇺🇸🇮🇹 Healthcare is more complicated than “USA bad, Italy good.”
The 🇺🇸 US can be brutally expensive without good insurance.
🇮🇹 Italy can provide excellent care with very low direct costs — especially in regions like Tuscany, where we have outstanding hospitals and surgeons. 🏥❤️
But the system has a price: regional inequality, bureaucracy, waste, corruption and staff shortages. And the SSN also provides care to millions of visitors and supports vulnerable immigrant populations, adding pressure to a system where many healthcare workers already work extremely hard for modest salaries.
The real challenge is making quality healthcare accessible, sustainable and fair — for patients, taxpayers and workers.

This summer’s lake adventures in the USA took an unexpected turn. 🇺🇸🏕️
Unfortunately, I won’t be back at the shop as soon as I expected, so I’ll be away from the counter for a while. If you were planning a trip to Florence specifically to meet me, I’m sorry we’ll have to postpone that visit. 🇮🇹❤️
I’m not sure how much Bitcoin magic my colleagues at the shop have mastered yet 😅⚡ — so if you stop by, you might need to be patient with them!
But this doesn’t mean I’m disappearing.
I’m turning this into a kind of digital nomad phase from home 💻🏠, where I’ll have more time to be active here on Nostr.
