well, the coaches who train these kids earn their salaries entirely in sats, and the sharks earn rewards which they spend or save, also entirely in sats, we try and post a good balance of videos showing both sides. our best estimates are that, in the kids' community, there's about 500 people using Bitcoin on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

This is about more than a salary. It’s about planting a seed for the future.
Our The Surfer Kids assistant coaches and Bitcoin Ekasi teaching assistants are still in high school. They are not permanent employees they are young people getting an opportunity to work part-time, earn an income, and learn valuable life skills.
Their salaries are denominated in sats (satoshis). Instead of simply receiving a rand amount, their pay is calculated and paid in sats.
Why do we do this?
Because we want them to experience Bitcoin, not just learn about it.
We want them to understand what it means to earn, save, and think long-term.
If they choose to save some of the sats they earn today, what could those sats mean for them in 5 or 10 years?
We don’t know what the future price of Bitcoin will be.
But we can give young people the opportunity to start saving today and learn the value of thinking about tomorrow.
One sat at a time. One lesson at a time. One future at a time. 🧡🇿🇦

TSK Rewards Spending⚡️⚡️⚡️
At The Surfer Kids, we record the monthly attendance of every child participating in our programme. Children who achieve an attendance rate of 70% or higher qualify for monthly Bitcoin rewards, paid in sats (satoshis).
The children can then spend their sats at local onboarded shops and merchants that accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. This gives the children an opportunity to experience the practical use of Bitcoin while also rewarding their commitment and consistency in the programme.
An important part of the initiative is that the sats are circulated within the local township economy. Instead of the reward simply being a once-off incentive, children can use their sats to purchase everyday necessities, including groceries, from participating local merchants.
Through this initiative, The Surfer Kids is using Bitcoin to encourage regular attendance, responsibility and commitment, while introducing children to Bitcoin and helping support local businesses within their communities.

A few of our Surfer Kids are currently in Jeffreys Bay for a week-long training camp, making the most of the world-class waves at Lower Point.
The early mornings have been filled with surfing, coaching, and plenty of hard work. The boys have been ripping over the past few days, pushing themselves and improving with every session. 🔥🏄‍♂️
With the Eden Surf Riders Junior Trials just a few weeks away, we're excited to see all their hard work put to the test. Those who earn selection will go on to represent Eden at the South African Junior Championships right here at Lower Point, Jeffreys Bay, later this year.

Inam Falteni, long time participant in our Surf Program, was selected for the South African Junior Squad.
The team will compete in the Junior World Surfing Games later this year.
He was selected as a non-travelling reserve, meaning he will be part of squad training, but won't attend the tournament unless another team member can't make it.
This is a major validation of the hard work we've put into developing the competitve side of our surf program.

With our local beach still closed after the damage caused by the recent storm, it's been tough for the kids not being able to surf. Diaz has always been the perfect spot for beginner surfers to learn and build confidence in the water.
This past Saturday, we headed over to Santos Beach to get everyone active again and back in the ocean. We spent the day swimming, running, and the little ones even managed to catch a few waves. 🌊🏄‍♂️☀️
Days like these remind us how much we appreciate our coastline and the incredible surf community around us. We can't wait for things to get back to normal so we can enjoy our local beach again. Until then, we'll keep making the most of every opportunity to get the kids in the water. 🤙

The South African National Treasury has proposed Draft Capital Flow Management Regulations that threaten financial freedom and property rights.
While the potential impact on Bitcoin adoption is severe, these regulations are far broader and grant the state sweeping powers over personal assets. Key threats include:
* Forced Liquidation: Granting the state power to compel the sale of not only crypto assets, but also foreign currency, gold, and securities.
* Banning Self-Custody: Making it illegal to hold or transact with your own assets outside of state-approved channels.
* Outlawing Peer-to-Peer Transactions: Effectively destroying circular economies and private commerce.
* Arbitrary Power: Giving the Minister unilateral power to set legal thresholds without parliamentary oversight.
A coordinated effort headed by Bitcoiners is underway to oppose these regulations:

The Treasury initially published two different dates - May 18th and June 10th - creating uncertainty about the true cutoff point for public comment.
This was clarified by a recent media statement, published this week, which extended the deadline to 30 June, and, if you read between the lines, also seemed to indicate that public pressure is already working.
These regulations, if passed, will affect many South Africans who hold any form of foreign asset, not just those who use Bitcoin.
Given the profound implications for property rights and financial sovereignty, it is crusial that we keep up the public pressure.

Before the recent storm hit our coastline, the banks were looking incredible and everything seemed very promising. Unfortunately, the storm has changed our beach dramatically. Large sections of the dunes have been damaged, and a significant amount of sand has been washed away. The spot now looks completely different from what it did just a short while ago.
We’re hopeful that, with time, nature will restore the beach to its former condition, but for now the damage is extensive.
As soon as it’s safe to access the beach again, we’ll post a follow-up video to show just how much the spot has changed and the impact the recent storm has had on our coastline.

🚨 The South African government is attempting to OUTLAW FINANCIAL FREEDOM.
🚫 Under the guise of "capital flow management," new draft regulations will effectively destroy self-custody and Bitcoin's promise of financial inclusion in our country.
🇿🇦 These aren't just rules for exchanges. They are a direct attack on EVERY South African.
Here’s what they do:
‼️ BAN SELF-CUSTODY: By targeting transactions that touch global network infrastructure, they make self-custody illegal.
‼️ FORCE LIQUIDATION: They grant the state the power to force the sale of Bitcoin to the National Treasury. This is expropriation.
‼️ OUTLAW CIRCULAR ECONOMIES: Peer-to-peer transactions for goods and services will be deemed "black market" activity if they exceed an unspecified threshold.
‼️ GIVE THE STATE ARBITRARY POWER: The Minister can decide the "threshold" for illegality at any time, creating uncertainty for everyone.
✊ This is a war on open, permissionless money. It's a war on the unbanked. It's a war on your right to control your own wealth.
📜 And they're trying to do it WITHOUT A VOTE IN PARLIAMENT.
⏳ The deadline for public objection is either May 18 or June 10, depending on which government source is consulted.

This is the story of Samuel.
In 2018, a 23-year-old from Switzerland arrived at The Surfer Kids as a volunteer.
Most volunteers stayed for a couple of weeks.
Samuel stayed three months.
That alone made him different. But what made him unforgettable was how he showed up — fully present, deeply engaged, connecting with the kids in a way that left a lasting mark.
After those three months he returned home to Switzerland and life moved on.
Or so we thought.

Five years later, in April 2023, we received an unusually large donation.
No name.
No explanation.
Just… generosity.
We didn’t know where it came from.
Six months later, in November 2023, we found out.
Samuel had passed away.
At just 28 years old.
Cancer.
In his final wishes he asked that people donate to The Surfer Kids — because of the impact the project had on his life.
People listened.
That donation… was collected at his funeral.

Let that sink in.
A young man spends three months volunteering in a small township project…
And five years later, in his final moments, that experience is still so meaningful that he directs people there, one last time.

His sister reached out to us to explain everything.
Samuel had returned home after his travels and was diagnosed almost immediately.
He fought.
He went through multiple treatments.
None worked.
He died of cancer at 28.
But even in that, he was thinking about others.

His family told us they wanted to visit.
They wanted to see this place that had meant so much to him.
And recently, they finally did.
His parents. His sisters. His extended family.
They came to see, to understand, to connect with the place that shaped part of Samuel’s life.
And it was powerful.
For them. For us.

But there’s more to this story.
Samuel had volunteered in 2018 — before Bitcoin Ekasi even existed.
Years later, in 2022, at around the same time Samuel passed away, a German TV crew travelled here and filmed a documentary about Bitcoin Ekasi.
In that documentary, there’s a quick shot of a photo wall.
On that wall — one of the very few volunteer photos — is Samuel.
The filmmakers didn’t know. They just filmed what looked interesting.
But somehow, that exact image made it into the final cut.
Samuel’s parents, sitting in Switzerland, watched that documentary…
…and suddenly saw their son.

And when they finally did visit, they didn’t just see a surf program.
They saw a living, breathing community.
They saw kids earning, spending, and saving in sats.
They saw Bitcoin not as speculation — but as a real tool, used daily.
Coming from Switzerland, their perspective on Bitcoin shifted.
Not because of theory.
Because of demonstration.

Samuel came for three months, 8 years ago.
He left a mark that lasted beyond his lifetime.

After completing the @nprofile…2hav , many Bitcoin Ekasi students were not ready to stop learning, so we reopened our doors for them to continue their Bitcoin education at a deeper level.
Students now progress through books such as The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean Ammous and Inventing Bitcoin by Yan Pritzker . After completing their reading, our teacher Sassa uses ChatGPT to generate a postgraduate-level assessment highlighting how powerful modern learning tools have become.
Students who achieve 80% or higher are rewarded with $50 worth of sats. These rewards are sponsored by the @nprofile…p37u, and we are grateful for their support in making this initiative possible.
So far, out of five students who have continued on this advanced learning path, one has completed The Bitcoin Standard and is now actively involved in our library program. Additional books available in the program include Why Buy Bitcoin by Andy Edstrom and The Internet of Money by Andrea Antonopoulos.
Some students are also beginning to think about life after school, showing growing interest in technology, business, and community-focused work. While many are still exploring their paths, there is early curiosity around Bitcoin-related opportunities especially in education, onboarding, and local adoption work.
There are also potential pathways within Bitcoin-focused organisations working in financial inclusion and grassroots education, such as African Bitcoiners and @nprofile…3uh5, which may align with some of their interests.
To build on this further, we can continue engaging students with questions about what subjects they enjoy most, whether they plan to study further or enter the workforce, and whether they can imagine themselves working in Bitcoin, entrepreneurship, or community development in the future.
