It's an good time to raise awareness of the racist origins of tipping in the US. I didn't know about this until a few years ago.
Following the emancipation of enslaved Blacks, there were many newly-freed people needing to earn a living. Restaurants hired Blacks but refused to pay them, or paid them little, forcing them into a subservient role of asking patrons for tips. Black Pullman porters spread the tipping practice across the US.

The Trump administration has repeatedly said, in their cherry-picked list of food items where prices have gone down, that egg prices are down 90%. If egg prices had been, say, $5/dozen before the last election, then a 90% decrease in prices would mean eggs selling for $0.50/dozen today. OTD in 1980 Mt. St. Helens exploded in the largest landslide in recorded history. I heard it from 150 miles away, camping in the Three Sisters Wilderness.
Dick Lasher was on his way to Spirit Lake on Mt. St. Helens, in his red Pinto with a motorcycle hitched to the back. I found out why my vet's office is so backed up lately. The woman who ran the front desk, and hence made the clinic run, got sick and tired of being profiled and pulled over by federal agents on her work commute. She's a white citizen, married to someone with a Latinx last name. So it seems that ICE/CBP are using automatic license plate readers to identify cars with owners with foreign sounding names, and stopping them over and over. She quit her job and now stays at home. #ICEOut

Chronically understaffed and overworked air traffic controllers learned at the end of last week what to expect in their paychecks this Thursday: nothing. They are not getting paid for the past month due to the govt shutdown.
On Sunday many air traffic controllers called in sick resulting in 8,700 delayed flights. On Monday an addl 3,370 flights were delayed with 118 flights in or out of the US cancelled.
That's gonna leave a mark.

We attended the #NoKingsDay2 march in beautiful "war ravaged" Portland, home of the Amphifa Frogs. Handed out 200 free safety whistles in mere minutes. No photos bc left our phones home. So many great signs and costumes!

OTD 45 years ago, at 8:32 AM, Mt. St. Helens erupted, displacing a cubic mile of debris, killing 57 people, darkening skies, and raining ash on 11 states.
I was camping with my girlfriend about 150 miles away in the Three Sisters Wilderness and we heard the blast. We heard a second big boom as it echoed off Mt. Jefferson or Mt. Washington. Achievement unlocked: ballots dropped off at the local library. Or we could have put them in the mail (no postage required).
All voting in the United States should be this easy. No lines, no voting machines not working, no running out of ballots, no voter intimidation, no voter suppression. Oregon was the first state in the union to move to vote-by-mail for all elections -- and it works very well.

Oregon state has had vote by mail for over two decades, and it works exceptionally well. Not only can I fill my ballot out at any hour of the day, with no line to stand in, but I also signed up for notifications so I get a text like this when my ballot it is sent, when it is received back, and when it is counted.
If you live in a state that doesn't have vote by mail, heavily lobby your state legislation to move to do it. It also prevents a lot of voter suppression!

Today's chore: reglazing a few window panes on our 91 year old house that are more exposed than others. Perhaps the first time they've been redone, who knows? Unfortunately, they are on the second storey with no good access from below so I am working on the outside frames by standing inside and reaching through the open window with a tool in one hand and a mirror in the other. Hah!

A friend told me that his doctor said no one dies of COVID anymore. A medical doctor said that.
According to the Oregon Public Health Division, 45 people died from COVID in my state in August 2024.
People are still dying from COVID.
