Side-note, since upgrading my well-established desktop from Pop!_OS 22.04 to 24.04 removed basically all of my packages and software, there's now no reason for me not to restore my /home directly on top of Debian there either. I expect I'll do that, and move all of my systems to a standard setup.
Which, now that I think of it, would be an ideal use case for NixOS..... no. No.

There's something satisfying about having a real #Debian #Linux desktop on my new Thinkpad.
It feels so much simpler and more straightforward to manage than some of the Debian-derivatives I've been using.
I was on Pop!_OS for the longest time, on both a laptop and my main desktop, and it was solid, but the lack of updates and focus on Cosmic has really taken away from having a solid reliable and predictable desktop experience (sadly).
Debian is just rock solid, predictable, easy to manage, and simple without being limited. There's a reason it's a standard.

It's the dead of Winter and there's 4 feet of snow on the ground, but I just remembered it's year 3 for my native plantings under that snow.
These plants are absolutely going to pop in Spring!
About 10 native Echinacea, half a dozen black-eyed susans, Penstemon hirsutus, Anemone canadensis, several rare narrow-leaved vervain plants, mountain mint, SO much Monarda Didyma and Fistulosa. AH it's going to be so great, and just starting to move toward establishing to thriving this coming season!

After using #Linux 100% for the last several years, switching back to #Windows, it becomes infuriatingly clear that Windows does not, in fact, have a fully preemptable OS design.
So many things can interrupt userspace and ruin interactivity. It's why Windows feels "freezy" and a little unpredictable. Like, you never know if your mouse is going to slow down, or an app will crash, or a blip will happen in your audio. Because the kernel is a tangled mess of custom bespoke spaghetti edge cases built up over generations, not a consistent predictable scheduler that just schedules predictably.
Linux is a very mature, superior OS, and it's becoming more so by the week.

The most customer-focused engineers and UX designers I've worked with don't really care that much about Design Systems.
The user and how tasks work for them are the number one priority. Even if it's inefficient, difficult, or more time consuming.
They still think in design systems, and modularity, and making things easier to build and design--but it's always second fiddle to what the software is actually able to do.
I think that's very right.

40 years ago, you could afford to not just survive, but live somewhere decent, enjoy life, travel, have kids, eat at restaurants, and even save a little. All of that was attainable and normal, with a normal job.
The reason it isn’t for us is NOT that we aren’t working hard enough or making good decisions about spending, it’s because the wealthy have systematically siphoned off every cent that they can—the wealth that is rightfully ours from the labor we generate and contribute to society—and taken it for themselves by sheer power and absence of resistance.
Never forget that. Never accept it.

I believe this is because they think about *everything* on an individual level. They don't really understand (or just have no experience with, or no framing for) talking about a system or combinations of people and 2nd and 3rd order effects.
Their whole world is about individuals and thinking about individuals they meet and thinking about themself as an individual and their family as individuals. They do not have a language for "systems" and therefore do not see them.
So when other people talk about systems, they genuinely think they are talking about the individual people. They have no way of knowing or seeing otherwise. They have no word for it in their personal vocabulary of experience.
And most people think this way, I think. Probably 70-80%, just going about their day thinking about themselves and their immediate contacts.

Easily forgotten:
The things that genuinely motivate people to work ten or a hundred times harder toward a common goal are human, emotional, meaningful, purposeful, empathetic.
You can achieve minor gains with the mechanical, numeric, authoritative, concrete, inhuman; and it can feel like progress. But doing those same things but *harder* turns into #demotivation.
Genuinely #motivating people is not just more and better of the same; it's an entirely different kind of #management.
