Well, I think this rests on different definitions of finite.
If I have a finite physical resource, that is all there is. I cannot multiply it, in case of, for instance a land, and the economic pressures vs having a commons set off the tragedy.
If I have an idea, I can transfer it to you. It costs me nothing, I still have the idea, you still have the idea, etc. That is what it means to say that it is infinite and intangible, and why the commons does not apply.

Well, sweden is a democracy, so I can expand on your sentence there and say that the democratic impulse is used for _all_ decisions in sweden, like it is in all western european countries.

I think what we see are "bugs" in the thought goods from the enlightenment.

I would add to the enlightenment another important factor, and that is christian forgiveness. It might sound strange, but what I mean is the end of "honor culture" where a death can only be repaid by another death. That way of doing justive gives you arabia of today. A desert where no one wants to live and where peopl are very backwards.
By killing off honor culture, society frees up resources and becomes enormously more productive.

In small nations, missteps become very visible, which creates a pressure to perform. Perhaps that is why micronations that are monarchies perform so well? Threats of nuclear, blackmail or biological warfare I think are the only destructive strategies that small city states could leverage to get any kind of safety from bigger neighbours.
On the side of peace there is of course trade. Ideally both would realize that they benefit far more from that, but all it takes is a crazy dictator to smash that beautiful thing to pieces.

True. I remember that from a history book series I was reading on the middle ages.
Would be fascinating, if that balance would be the optimum for quality of life, while theoretically, stopping political entities from achieving the size that starts world wars.
Then of course there is always the defense problem, as a small entity of city state size, if the neighbours are big.

I have 1 pair of loake boots for the twinter, 1 pair of Onitsuka tigers for the summer. 2 pairs of oxfords for office use, although those I use about 3-4 times per years, since I stopped working in an office. That's it.
I lika loake. My oldest pair must be like 20 years or so, and they still look great. That's quality for you!

I can only come up with 3 options for communication in case that happened:
1. Through the phone lines with modems.
2. Through LORA-radios.
3. Through HAM radio.
You can forget about downloading programs through all of these (except perhaps 1, so would mostly work for communication, chat, email, and browsing.

I would copy Switzerland and Liechtenstein 100%. They must be the 2 most successful countries in the EU region and add to that no natural resources to speak of.
Leftists might complain about the financial sector and low taxes, yet, both countries have higher standards of living than pretty much all other european countries. I think that's a pretty low price to pay for increased living standards! =)

Maybe city states are the way of the future? Democracy was designed to ru na city state, so maybe it's a kind of "optimum size" where people feel that decisions really matter and affect them? The government could also change and adapt more quickly if it runs only a city state vs a country.
