I think one of the loneliest parts of growing older is that you've had the time to witness the things you grew up with fade away, and you can't do anything about it.
Then, you know your children will never get to experience some of the things that helped shape you into the person you are.
Some things from my childhood are making a return, and that brings me endless joy, but there are some things that simply don't come back, leaving them only a nostalgic memory.

To end this rant, I just want to say that if you are able to stop looking at all the bad stuff in life, the good stuff shines brighter.
When you learn to look beyond what the system shows you to keep you ineffective and depressed, you start to see so much beauty, so much hope in this world where everyone seems to have lost all their optimism or desire to do anything except ironically become the eat-ze-bugs NPC drones they unironically mock daily.

It's also tied to how I feel about the drama and doomerism people seem to really be pushing.
Take the retro community, for instance: we all grew up in a better era and we can be homesick for that. That doesn't mean nothing good is releasing in modernity. It doesn't mean everything new is slop.
I enjoy both the old AND the new and my joy is fuller because of that. At the same time, I don't support mediocrity, but I don't feel bent out of shape when I come across it. I just simply ignore it.

It's thanks to my return to GOG. I gradually grew apart from GOG over the past couple years and returned recently thanks to the new ownership.
Ever since I returned, I've been having a blast. Not that I've quit Steam, because I absolutely have not, but it's genuinely a good feeling to be able to appreciate and enjoy the greatness of both Steam and GOG at the same time. No fanboying, just enjoying both platforms!

I definitely recommend Mafia 2 and Watch Dogs 2, though the other games in both franchises are also worth a play. I just consider the second entry to be the best game in both franchises.
Mafia 2's story is insane, a fantastic story about a guy who chooses crime at a young age and ends up trapped by his own choices. Watch Dogs 2's story is a great one about privacy, hacker culture, etc. and has great missions with incredibly refined gameplay that is just FUN to play.

I don't think I'll ever truly understand why GTA is so beloved. Yes, during the PS2 era, they set the stage for most open world games today. However, after the PS2, the series was basically just retreading the same ground with better graphics. I actually have ZERO interest in GTA6 whatsoever.
Personally, I find the Mafia and Watch Dogs games infinitely better than GTA in EVERY way.
Better stories, better characters, twists on the gameplay loop, etc.

I'm thinking long-term more than anything. I get that things are rough now, but when you look long-term, a lot of what Trump has been doing is meant to secure the future. I feel like a lot of folks, especially dolts like MTG, can't see that. As such, I don't regret my vote.
Then again, I'm also fundamentally opposed to female politicians and leadership roles like that. As I said, I'm a traditionalist. I believe the world was a much better place before feminism of ANY kind.

I definitely see it differently. To my eyes, she didn't get her way, threw a tantrum, then turned her back on the cause that elected her. It happens all the time with women in the conservative space. Ashley St Clair and Lauren Southern are two other big examples. I think Lauren Boebert, for all the things I dislike about her, is an example of how to handle political dispute. She recently made it known that she fully supports both Trump and Massie, despite their falling out.

Truthfully, I'm pretty darn conservative and have always been a Trump guy, so it shouldn't shock anyone that I dislike Massie :odysee_laughing:
But I'm also not averse to giving people credit where credit's due, which is why I was on his side for certain things like the Surveillance Accountability Act.

I'm curious what the Fediverse would recommend as a resource for learning MS-DOS in 2026.
I have limited exposure to it having grown up mostly on Windows 9x, but I use a Linux CLI and these days, I always opt for Powershell in the rare cases where I use Windows because it supports Unix-like commands. As such, I'm very limited on what I know about using DOS.
I see some tutorials on Youtube, I'm just curious what y'all think.

Before I had a dedicated gaming PC, I used to play Skyrim on an old laptop with ~20 FPS, so low that the trees wouldn't animate in the breeze anymore. I beat it that way... it wasn't pleasant, but my motivation to play that game outweighed my frustration with framerate :guilded_lol:

I'd go for the Steam Machine personally (I just love Valve) but I like the fact that Steam Machines are designed to allow competition, just as the Steam Deck was. Valve understands basic economics and the fact that healthy competition drives down prices and improves the experience for consumers.

I've put about an hour into it so far as I have it on GOG, and I love the concepts, but the early stages with running the laundromat are pretty tedious. I'm sure it will get better once I actually get to opening the arcade, though, which is why I plan to keep playing.

You'd definitely think they'd want their own custom operating system, but it's not quite as cut-and-dry as that. By using software supported by a massive tech company with all sorts of contracts with the government, they can effectively commission custom versions of that software for their own use and have support long after the consumer and business grades.
It's a lot of work maintaining an OS, and personally, I'd rather it be done by the private sector anyway (even if I hate MS).

They use Windows for most of the "normie" employees but I'd be willing to bet they use some form of Linux for the more secure stuff. Windows with Bitlocker is secure against criminals who steal a computer, but that's about it. LUKS on Linux is secure enough to make even powerful and advanced governments sweat. It's why they rely on metadata more than trying to crack encrypted data.

Either they flop, get canned, lose momentum or aren't even really an MMO in the first place.

Personally, the glitch art side doesn't make me feel nostalgic per-se, but I do see it as an artistic iteration on the genre (often used with a sense of irony).
On that subject, many see vaporwave as a critique on 90s consumerism and culture but personally, I don't understand that interpretation. My interpretation is that it's a bittersweet vision of both my childhood AND of the future that I (and many others) imagined in those days, which is why I love it!

Star Wars Micro Machines were THE toy of my childhood. I had the majority of them and would come up with all sorts of stories and scenarios with them in addition to reliving the scenes from the movies (and games)!
I hate that the reboot with The Force Awakens ended so quickly. I collected most of those as well and they were almost as good as the classics.

While I prefer the base Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, its standalone expansion (Mysteries of the Sith) has one of my favorite Star Wars aesthetics of all time.
It captures the dark, "gritty" feel that people often talk about with shows like Andor, but it does so without abandoning what makes Star Wars what it is, as Andor did.

I've decided to return to GOG fully, not just to play existing games, but with the openness of purchasing from them again.
Steam will remain my home and the first place I prioritize buying from but for older games, and for games I really like, I'll be going back to buying DRM-free from GOG.

McDonald's is the worst offender, by far. I hate that my kids will never know the feeling of going to the playroom to have fun after their meal.
I only eat fast food because I basically have to eat whatever my family is eating (I don't have a car or a whole lot of money right now), and they are constantly eating fast food. Drives me nuts because I'd like to cut the seed oils and eat wholesome foods instead :terry_nono:

Honestly, their modern look reminds me of the look Chipotle had when I was younger as well: kinda industrial, brutalist, edgy... except TB took out the cool factor of that aesthetic lol. That said, it really is one of the better modern restaurant aesthetics overall.
Also, if you live in small town USA, you'll find a lot of diners and restaurants that have retro aesthetics. Maybe not old school TB but still, pleasant throwbacks!

As a big fan of TB since I was very little, I never understood that meme because I don't think I've ever had a problem like that after eating there (or any Mexican restaurant, for that matter) :odysee_laughing:

Never liked Taco Bell??? That's pretty much blasphemy to my generation :guilded_lul:
But yeah, I just wish that they kept this general aesthetic and updated it slightly. Modern TB design isn't BAD (it's one of the few fast food restaurants that still has some level of beauty to it) but this look was just unbeatable. They could've kept it "with times" without outright abandoning the colors and designs entirely.

The combination of Tolkien, woodgrain and retro-appropriate color palette makes this keyboard nearly ideal to my preferences. The only thing I'd add is the numpad, as I hate when keyboards don't include one.

I haven't played all the Ys games yet but there's such a charm to Falcom's games! I was a latecomer to their games as I didn't get into JRPGs until the past few years, but once I sunk my teeth into Tokyo Xanadu, I knew I needed to play more of their games.
Would you recommend this one for a modern playthrough or should I stick to the ones I can get natively on PC?

In addition to that, once you've played and enjoyed the original games, there's an extensive modding scene with plenty of standalone mods.
Most notable is Black Mesa, which even original HL devs say is a better experience; I recommend playing the original first, however, as Black Mesa feels way better when you know how the original played.
There's also Portal: Revolution, which is an interquel between Portal 1 and 2, I definitely recommend playing that one at some point!

You can't go wrong with the original. With Half-Life, you definitely want to play them in story order as it makes a lot more sense like that. You can also play the two expansions (Blue Shift and Opposing Force) as they're both REALLY good but they're also not technically canon.
After that, go for HL2, then you can go into the two expansions for that game as well (Episode 1 and 2), as those ARE canon.
Portal can be played whenever you like. Tied in, but not critical for the HL story.

I always preferred retro games from the NES onward but I did grow up on some of the 2600 games.
Now that I've been getting into retro computing, I've been learning just how revolutionary Atari was in those days! I mean, I knew the 2600 was the first home console to really hit mainstream success but I didn't realize just how far Atari's impact went in both video games and personal computing.

Real talk, though... I try to keep my weekends focused solely on fun stuff. Maybe not always gaming, but I try to avoid things that take a lot of time or drain a lot of energy unless it's specifically something I wanted to do that day.
On weekdays, I carve out an hour or two before bed to unwind with a game, videos or a personal project.

I normally would but the stock cooler that came with my CPU is actually pretty solid so I didn't feel the need to do so. Still, I love the look of those larger coolers so I might dig it out next time I dust out the interior. Couldn't hurt to replace the thermal paste anyway!

I've always been a fan of Tusky's UI. Not a huge fan of the developer but the app itself is very solid. It just feels right to use it.
Of course, I miss out on OP's custom designs on RG when I go that route but I see them on PC at least!

Such an incredible game... I really need to play it again, the atmosphere and writing is unbeatable.
Honestly, in their golden age, Interplay was pretty much the king of PC gaming. So many phenomenal CRPGs were released during that era, from Fallout to Baldur's Gate to Planescape: Torment. While some of those games were developed by other studios, Interplay both developed and published so many borderline flawless games back then.
Also, I never played the original but the enhanced was amazing!

I'm mostly a Raisinettes and cookie dough ball kind of guy. I prefer the stuff that doesn't easily get stuck in the teeth (though Raisinettes can sometimes), which is why I avoid Sour Patch Kids entirely at the theater.
