...I suppose I should explain the catch? Like, I wrote my dissertation about it, but... it feels weird to talk about it now...even though I technically just opened the can of worms myself...orz

but there is a catch.
things like Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) completely shatter the idea that a server "must" see plaintext coordinates to do its job.
If a company actually built their infrastructure around those principles, the app could send an encrypted spatial query to a server.
The server could calculate proximity or look up the local weather on the ciphertext itself then return the encrypted result....
But that is the catch.

here is what I mean:
Apple can claim "zero-knowledge" of your photos or text messages because those are static files just sitting in a digital vault.
What happens when your device is actively asking their servers, "Hey, what is the weather right where I am standing?" I.e. they can not claim zero- knowledge of data in transit.
But it is also necessary; a central server has to calculate the your coordinates and data. E2EE on that implies the server would just see encrypted gibberish.

hmm.... true but there is a gap in their model. I can not tell if it is oversight or design.
While Apple does offer true end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for personal cloud data, E2EE does not apply to live, real-time app interactions.
Yes, when you use 3rd party apps, your phone has to send your live GPS coordinates to their corporate servers for the app to function... but even within Apple’s native ecosystem, E2EE only secures your personal backups and specific synced content...

Le sigh. Like, the federal government is so noisy. Probably by design so that you miss or overlook when they actually do something (like put pressure on chip manufacturers via tariffs).

Oddly enough, Google was a step ahead of today's SCOTUS geofence ruling. They insulated themselves from broad sweeps by shifting "Timeline" data to on-device storage, destroying the central cloud pool police used to target.

To be sure, it looks more like an aggressive move to snatch the raw fuel line for the Arizona chip factories right out of Beijing's backyard.
Like, while the domestic side tracks who is collecting the private tolls at the gate (the sons), the macro-level machine is rewiring global infrastructure to build a self-contained, end-to-end tech ecosystem on U.S. soil.

Next-gen chips literally can not function without tungsten, which is used to create the microscopic plugs connecting billions of transistors. The massive risk? China controls over 80% of global tungsten and has been aggressively choking off exports with tight licensing controls.
That brings us right to your post. The U.S. government mobilizing up to $1.6B in federal financing to secure the massive untapped tungsten reserves in Kazakhstan is not a random business deal

So, in my opinion, the short version is that the administration is trying to own the vertical on high-tech infrastructure, completely insulating it from foreign choke points.
In mid-January 2026, the U.S. and Taiwan signed that massive $250B trade/chip deal. The U.S. essentially forced TSMC to onshore its most advanced fabrication (cutting-edge 3nm and 2nm nodes) to Arizona by leveraging tariff exemptions

so, there is actually a branch at this point of your thread (tungsten). Recall that in mid-January 2026, the U.S. and Taiwan signed a massive $250 billion trade and chip deal.
So this is, in my opinion, an aggressive, macro-level attempt to own the vertical and completely insulate the high-tech supply chain from foreign choke points.

Edit: Okay. I think I see the disconnect. No, I was not promoting my book. The crux of the paradox is that he is both right and wrong at the same time if you consider for short term ROI. As the first 3 sides before alluded, businesses are not ready, for various reasons. So their shareholders will also suffer, as the 4th side alluded.
