SA government getting into BTC confiscation:
In June 2026, a Johannesburg High Court ruling confirmed that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) can forfeit Bitcoin (and related funds) for breaches of exchange-control rules.
In the case of Mangundhla & Dangaiso v South African Reserve Bank, traders had moved nearly 1,680 Bitcoin (worth about R182 million at the time) from South African Luno accounts to foreign-exchange wallets between 2018 and 2020 without required Treasury approval. SARB treated this as unlawful capital export and ordered the forfeiture of nearly R6 million in Bitcoin assets plus bank/crypto-account balances. Judge Stuart Wilson upheld the order, ruling that Bitcoin is both “money” and “capital” under the Exchange Control Regulations 1961, so it can be seized like traditional currency.
This contradicts an earlier 2025 Pretoria High Court decision that crypto was neither money nor capital (that earlier ruling is under appeal). Draft Capital Flow Management Regulations have also raised concerns about broader state powers over crypto, including possible forced sales, but those remain proposals and are not yet in force.

It sounds counterintuitive—a solar plant producing electricity in the dead of winter or middle of the night—but that is the exact superpower of a molten salt tower solar thermal plant (also known as Concentrated Solar Power, or CSP).
Unlike traditional solar panels (photovoltaics) that convert sunlight directly into electricity and stop working the moment the sun goes down, this plant acts like a massive thermal battery. Here is how it keeps the lights on in the dark:
1. Capturing and Concentrating the Heat
During the day, thousands of large, tracking mirrors called heliostats track the sun and reflect its light onto a single point: a giant receiver at the top of a central tower.
2. Melting the "Battery" (The Secret Sauce)
Instead of heating water, the intense, concentrated sunlight heats a mixture of molten salt (usually a blend of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate) flowing through the tower receiver. The temperature of this salt skyrockets to over 560°C (1,040°F). Molten salt is used because it has an incredible capacity to retain heat for long periods without boiling or evaporating.
3. Storing the Energy for Later
This superheated liquid salt is then piped down into a massive, heavily insulated "Hot Salt" storage tank. This tank acts as the plant's battery. Because the insulation is so efficient, the salt stays molten and incredibly hot for hours, or even days, with minimal heat loss.
4. Generating Power in the Dark
When the sun sets, or when thick winter clouds roll over Jilin Province, the plant simply taps into its storage:
The Heat Exchange: The hot molten salt is pumped from the storage tank through a steam generator.
Creating Steam: The intense heat from the salt boils water, turning it into high-pressure steam.
Spinning the Turbine: This steam drives a traditional steam turbine connected to an electrical generator, producing electricity for the grid.
Recycling: Once the salt transfers its heat to the water, it cools down (though it stays liquid at around 290°C) and flows into a "Cold Salt" tank, ready to be pumped back up the tower when the sun comes up the next day.
Because they can dispatch power whenever it is needed, these plants are highly valuable for stabilizing the power grid, especially in frigid, high-latitude regions where winter nights are long and energy demand for heating is high.
