This is my third #NoKings march in #NYC, and the turnout was so huge that the route overflowed in multiple directions; I've never seen anything like it. Amy and I chilled in the park for a while waiting for the throng in Columbus Circle to move at all, then we scooted down 6th Ave a bit to find the march underway at both 7th and Broadway in parallel. The resulting human traffic jam in Times prevented any continuous walking. We baby-stepped as far as 50th St with our bad knees and called it good.

I have purchased my tickets to attend HOPE in person this year! I've been to hackerly conferences before, but not this one. And it's a 20-minute subway ride from my house, so.

I need to push back on this one. Trump and Miller sending their goon squads to #Maine is no “Ha ha, incompetent fascists” joke. Yes, Maine is overwhelmingly white—but Lewiston, one of the two cities on alert, has a famously significant Somali community. In recent years this community, and the success of their integration as newer Mainers, has been a source of positive media attention. If you pay for your ride using OMNY, the tap-and-go payment system, be prepared to bring up proof of your payment on a moment's notice.
I was just now stopped by a cop as I exited the M86, demanding that I show a receipt of my fare payment. The bus was held for several minutes, idling with doors open, as I worked through my surprise and confusion, and then fought with Bank of America's web app to show that I had spent $2.90 on the MTA today.

My friend was bummed to drop their pronouns from their email signature; no way around that one. But they have a lot more room to get creative with anti-DEI orders affecting their real work: following change-orders exactly to the letter, and swapping in other solutions which maintain the dropped work’s spirit. And doing so in a way that gets approved, because they're good at their job, and so are their managers. (I wish I could be more specific here, but you'll understand why I can’t be.) #uspol

Two weeks ago, my friend had no way to comply with the national RTO order. Today, they've been invited to share office space in a federal building a short drive away from their home, run by an unrelated bureau. Many federal buildings are now opening their doors to all civil servants who suddenly need office space, regardless of department or bureau. Not the usual way of doing things, but, these are not usual times. #uspol

I breathe in second-hand strength and courage from the r/fednews subreddit of federal civil servants, and stories from a close friend who works in the bureaucracy. #uspol
The initial shock-and-awe have passed, for my friend, their colleagues, and most of the folks posting to that subreddit. They’ve gotten to their feet—which is to say, returned to their desks—and are taking no shit.
A slogan I learned from both sources at the same time: "Hold the line, don’t resign." They have bumper stickers.

I don't remember anything about it other than the following:
• The world's most awkward driving simulator where it was super-easy to crash, and get lectured about the repair costs and sent back to the start every time it happened.
• A minigame where you looked for clues in peoples' houses while they weren't home, but they'd always come home anyway and catch you, and the game would lecture you further and send you back to the start yet again.

Now is a great time to know what messaging platforms feature true end-to-end encryption over all of your messages.
I believe that Signal is the champion here, storing almost no unencrypted information about you. Apple Messages is also good, but only "blue bubble” messages to other Apple users are encrypted, right?
It's important to know which platforms make themselves physically unable to share your message history to a hostile government or other entity that subpoenas or raids them.

I strongly recommend alerting your server's admins to the work that @npub1y2r…kvzk has been doing to coordinate a list of servers that have been compromised and turned into spam-launchers. Your admins can block these servers and prevent them from bothering anyone on your server.

I am having masto.nyc limit-block every server that I see spreading the current spam-wave.
One thing we all learned in February is that every server that allows this is either misconfigured, undermoderated, or a “ghost ship” server that an enthusiastic hobbyist launched in November 2022 and then forgot about.
Some of them will fix their stuff and we’ll let ‘em back in, but until that happens, they're all poor fediverse neighbors, even if unintentionally. #mastoadmin

I have now written the first of three scripts, starting over this morning's coffee. I am not letting all of this potential roll away without a fight.
Planning to write two more before I record any, on the theory that they'll help shape each other into what the whole system wants to be.
A practice read is less than five minutes long. I know that I read slightly too fast, and I’ll probably wanna add more detail. But yeah, if these make it off the workbench, then these are gonna be short shows.

I am still holding myself to strict-dad mode, per the top of this thread, in a modified way: To prove to myself that I actually care about this project beyond a passing whim, I need to record three episodes, publishing none of them, within a generous but finite time limit. If I can do that, then *we'll see*.
So far I have three sheets of typing paper with two-dimensional note-maps scribbled all over them, one per episode. I just might be able to pull this off.

Here's the deal. I have an idea for a project similar in spirit to Jmac's Arcade. (It is not Jmac's Arcade.) I recently called on that same spirit to write my Fogknife post about leaving Google, and rediscovered how very much I like this style of personal storytelling. I want to do more of it.
Back in the aughts I envisioned Jmac's Arcade as a podcast, and it ended up being just six episodes, and that was enough. I don't know if this new thing will take that shape—but if it does, it'll be okay.

I originally had it as "I know! I'll launch a new blog!!" and the person to whom I am married did her job, gesturing like the Ghost of Christmas Future to the vision of a discarded CRT on the sidewalk, and on the screen flickered a window containing exactly seven posts, the span of time between each the square of the previous, and the final post was two years old. I thought of the perfect domain name and branding for a fansite about a thing I care a lot about before thinking “Oh, this would be a perfect domain name and branding for a fan site for that thing I care a lot about." The situation with cannabis shops in NYC still feels a bit wobbly. I was definitely turned off by all the garish and often sketchy-looking gray-market shops during their brief ubiquity (and never mind the vans). I found the licensed-and-legal shop I used by going to the website of the brand I was interested in and using their own shop-finder thingy. This is my very first all-my-own #NYC subway story, collected in the winter of 2019, just after I moved here:
I had ridden the subway from our West Harlem apartment all the way down to Brooklyn for an event, and I was feeling pretty pleased with myself.
In fact I must have looked so confident, standing there in the Jay Street station, that a man asked me: “Are we in Brooklyn now?"
I said: “Yes! This is Brooklyn!”
He said: "I got on the wrong train!"
I said: "Oh no!!"
And off he ran.

I really can't overemphasize how happy I am to start going to scattered little events all over NYC, once or twice a week. This is the promise that I held when we moved here five years ago.
I did go to a couple, before this! Winter of 2019, I reconnected with @npub1hv5…xq0v at a random talk at NYU, and collected my first subway stories. It was nice!!
But then everything shut down for a couple of years, and then I worked at an energy-sapping tech job for three more.
Today, I feel like myself again.
