Someone at my studio likes to do this kind of crackle effect often. I was chatting with him and noticed that a chunk of a failed piece looked like a scallop shell and it gave it to me to play with. I have the perfect glaze combo to make it look like a shell too.

IMO Kokuyo Thin Paper Century Edition is the closest paper to old TRP for fountain pens.
I got a notebook and pad from JetPens a few years ago, but then it was out of stock for a long while. I also couldn't find any of it when I visited Japan. I was quite sad since it was so good but impossible to find for a long time.
But now JetPens has it again in notebook, pad, and loose paper formats. I stocked up on paper and some notebooks.

Before my trip, I took a class on achieving texture in pieces through a mixture of friction and other things, like scrapings or using sodium silicate to create crackling.

I took a member class on throwing bigger forms and made these vases. One I decorated with bubble underglaze and that seems to have started another trend in the studio. The other one I took outside to splatter different glazes over white.

If you're not familiar with the ink I was using, it's an orangey-red that leans kind of brownish.
I wouldn't have made the association if it had been an ink of any other color, like blue or green or purple lol but yes, it was a congealed/coagulated like ink. I used pen flush to soak and thoroughly cleaned with schon dsgn tools. The nib and feed are fine!

yeah something about it seems off - the original bottle is perfectly fine but when it's in small amounts it gels up and gets gross. I asked the seller and reddit if anyone else had this problem with the ink when I first got it and it seemed an isolated thing and maybe linked to a specific pen. But after this I'm gonna toss it.

When I first got the Lennon Tool Bar Sun Moon Lake Ruby Black Tea ink, it kept congealing in the pen, a piston-filler. But it was fine in a c/c.
I recently inked up a Pilot converter with it and all was fine. Then I refilled it. Picked it up earlier and found it was dry, but full, though the ink looked viscous. I cleaned it with a syringe and what splattered from the converter into my sink had the EXACT color and texture of period clots. Amazing.

Not sure if someone else posted this already, but the top 3 inks of the Colorverse Colorvent 2025 are: Erebus Crater, Polar Night, and Follow the Water.
2 chromoshaders and one shimmer. I'm pleased with these choices over last year's!

Something wonderful arrived today: a pair of Montblancs I sent out for an urushi glow up by Bokumondoh. They are truly gorgeous! I got them inked up this evening.
The 149 has a raden gradient. The 146 has a pink and gold hakeme-nuri pattern.

I took a picture this time of setting up the various tools and practice slabs of clay for teaching my handle making (without pulling) and better attachments class at the studio.
The attendees were impressed by how easily the hand extruders make interesting and cute handles. Everyone feels less daunted by handles now. And yet, the number one "thing I learned" from all of them was using a super soft silicone rib to smooth & shape clay. Vinegar water was number 2 on the list.

Took a member class yesterday and learned how to make and print stencils on a Cricut (which I learned is pronounced cricket and not cry-cut) and how to attach them to pieces to decorate pottery. Made this piece with a flower stencil and luckily found some purple underglaze to color it in with.

I'm not sure if I'm doing terra sigillata right, but this is one of my finished attempts. I was able to get it very shiny when it was on the dry end of leather hard before bisque firing, though it lost some of that shine after the kiln firing. I got ideas from other studio members before glazing the inside of it with the "mint green" glaze because I wanted something of contrasting. I think it turned out pretty cool with an unexpected wood grain look.

I really debated whether or not to participate because I've been so busy lately. Forgot to post my plates that have been coming out of the glaze kiln. I made them all in a batch right before New Year's. They started coming out about 2-3 weeks ago and I've been using them and replaced my old dinner plates (which I'm rehoming on Buy Nothing). I'm pretty happy with them. They might all be done by now but I haven't counted.

Went to The Dalles, OR for the long weekend to see eagles. Tons to see from the OR side dam park. Highest count at once was 32. Also visited a wonderful event at the Gorge Discovery Center that included working raptors and their handlers. Visited their eagles too.

I had this past week off. So I spent a lot of time at the studio.
What did I make?
A set of 7 plates. 4 porcelain cups. 2 bowls to try terra sigillata and burnishing on (to perhaps various levels of success but I learned a lot for the next attempt), and 3 travel mugs with decorations (which I put away to dry before I got pictures of them).

I decided to replace my Hobonichi Techo A6 with a Hobonichi Weeks for 2026. The Techo felt like it was unnecessary and more than needed. Flipping through a Weeks at the store made me think it would be a good substitute for how I use it.

My 2025 journal is a Kokuyo Century notebook with Thin Paper. I love Kokuyo Thin Paper and think it's the best/closest thing to original TRP. Unfortunately it is not easy to find more of!
For my 2026 journal, I will use my Atelier Musubi notebook I got at the SF Pen Show. It has original TRP. I'm not sure if it has enough pages for the year, but I'll start off in it. I have a Kakimori hardbound notebook with fabric cover to use when that fills as a kind of match.

These were a nice three to end the Colorvent. Sojourner is a nice dark purple, Lunar Black goes down with a greenish hue, and the color and sparkle of Winter Wonderland is gorgeous.

I really love Blue Hole. Such a pretty blue. Blood Falls is an unexpectedly pretty deep red. Has a nice sheen with thicker/heavier application too.

I had it in a B nib and it was too light for that. I think it needs a pretty wet writer and likely concentrated into a thinner line.

also, regarding last year's White Hole, it's so pale it needs to be used with a fine tipped dip pen to be legible

Erebus Crater is even prettier than I thought it would be. Morning Frost is a cool concept and something I'll try mixing with a bit of another ink. Milky Sea is lovely. Snow Angel is a stand-out beauty as well. LGM is too neon and bright to be something I'll use. Sungrazing Comet is a very ordinary blue ink with red sheen.

I wasn't impressed by the communication surrounding the Phantom and I think a lot of people had issues with that (and the pen).

I got mine 20% off during Black Friday. It hasn't arrived yet though. But this day's ink is one of the ones that really caught my eye and I'm excited to have in my hands.

I wrote a page of a letter in the Fluffy Wool Ball ink and it was very legible in a fountain pen.

My latest inks, featuring Kitty Ink Pot inks, which are all chromoshaders. So far I've only put the Fluffy Wool Ball into a pen. It goes down sometimes very blue and has interesting blue-purple fluctuations as I write.

I went to grad school in a town that tried to reduce it's light pollution. It was wonderful being able to go to a park or the field across the street to see stars and watch meteor showers. Now I live smack in the middle of a city. But sometimes I can see stars. I actually saw the aurora (faintly) from my rooftop deck last year. I heard it was better at one of the northern city parks though. The past two days have been cloudy/rainy though so can't see it from anywhere here.
