DigitalOcean was easy, but expensive, and I've been subsidizing hosting costs when we could have moved to a dedicated server earlier.

We also limit anon pagination in follower/following lists on the web, and limit other anon endpoints to prevent crawler abuse.
We make just the right amount of data public, and for the full experience, you need to be logged in.

I'm rebuilding the Pixelfed mobile app from scratch to leverage a cleaner and more maintainable UI, using native UI components on Android and iOS.
This isn't only about performance, making the app less complex and easier to use and with improved caching and backend error handling will drastically improve the UX.

AI and vibe coding is pretty controversial, but in certain contexts, I think it's pretty amazing to consider that it represents a diverse demographic of people (of all ages) that did not possess the skills to build a website, app, service or company without these historic new technological advancements.
Yeah, they may not be the most accessible or secure projects, but just the fact that anyone can learn to code much easier, is something to celebrate.

I started it because I wanted to prove that I could be a real web dev/programmer by taking a chance and starting my first full stack open source project.
7 years later, I'm so proud I took that step and left my automotive tech career behind to become a self taught developer.

How is an AR filter harmful, when you don't need to even finish uploading the video to Loops, you can literally record a video then save it and share it to a specific person outside of Loops.
It's not that different from editing a photo and sharing it. That happens a lot. Where is the harm?

I'd rather work a non-fediverse full time job than sell out, despite knowing first hand what poverty feels like.
I could've taken up any one of those VC sharks up on an offer to fund or sell Pixelfed, but I couldn't live with myself if I did.
That being said, I am looking into sustainable long-term ethical monetization to enable me to work full time, and even grow a team, without sacrificing our core tenets of building ethical alternatives.
This means so much to me, I want to keep building...

I owe so much to @npub1n8y…l96n for funding Pixelfed as their first fediverse project back in 2019.
I would've been homeless if it wasn't for them, and expediting my first milestone RFP.
A year ago we exploded and had to scale up, it was expensive, and that is where a large part of our Kickstarter funds were spent.
I'm now looking at dedicated hosting to reduce costs significantly, as it's not sustainable.

Starting to see Loops spam accounts, and will be prioritizing a new MRF type system in Loops to help automate detection and classification.
Spam sucks, and from my experience with Pixelfed, we need to address this sooner rather than later.

Jack Dorsey had the chance to build on ActivityPub in 2019, chose to invent a whole new protocol instead, watched it become the exact kind of VC-funded corporate platform he said he didn't want, left the board, and is now funding Nostr.
ATProto doesn't care about what they can't control, or they would use ActivityPub, period.

not throwing stones, just spittin facts. To much glazing over AtProto when many seem to forget its history, so I feel a duty to remind people of this.
ATProto never cared about openness or the social web, or they would have adopted ActivityPub and helped improve it.
They had to control everything. Jack even said he regrets that himself.

The fediverse is the only one in this story that never needed a billionaire to survive.

I haven't heard any negative feedback about the new Loops UI (across web and app).
Attention to detail and polish before shipping has really paid off, especially considering how harsh I was treated before publishing the source code.

Pixelfed has had comment controls since 2019, and Loops just shipped "Hide comments" support, but I agree we can do more, I'm working on extensive comment controls for both Pixelfed and Loops.

Not going to lie, but this article* really did hurt, and maybe for the right reason, Pixelfed isn't a universal do-everything platform, it's photo focused.
Your PR just reminded me of that, and I admit, I did get a bit heated, but there is no plans to block long-form content, rather, I think Pixelfed should allow users to filter this at their level, giving them the power to choose levels of federated content they want to see.

Sorry but Pixelfed users don't want to see WordPress/Ghost/WriteFreely posts in feeds just because they have an image attachment.
The purpose of Pixelfed is photo sharing, that is the context, not the caption, the caption can be empty, because it's not the focus.
Let the microblogging platforms handle this.

i shipped plenty of other bug fixes, and optimizations.
We now use webp for new avatar uploads, properly support cropping on web and fixed federation with Friendica and others (due to the missing acct: in webfinger lookups)

While I don't mind operating fediverse services like https://fedidb.com, I believe @npub12ax…0twd is something that should be transitioned to a neutral and trusted 3rd party organization for the betterment of everyone.
Essential services like these depend on trust and integrity, and while I'm not worried about that, I have my hands full with Pixelfed, Loops and Sup.
I built this because we need it, and want to find a better long term home, but if I can't, I will still run it until we can.

Hey @npub1764…nuj0, I'm not sure if you've seen https://webintents.net yet, but it's basically the missing piece of universal interactions/onboarding across fediverse platforms.
I'm reaching out because I'm almost done implementing this, but also feel like this should be maintained/operated by a trusted organization like SWF.
I'd love to handover everything, including the domains so it can thrive and be maintained by an unbiased organization.

We import them using FediDB.org/S3 and serve them from there, but we need the source url to fetch and store them.
