I think about that as I consider how to defend my homestead from threats. Two dimensions is one thing. I can make it difficult for people to approach my house, but I have nothing vertical. One thing I think facebook gets right is groups. My wife is in several support groups to help her manage my son's various issues (autism, ostomy matters, T1D, etc). That's imprecise. Out of 195 countries, France ranks 14th in the world in oil consumption. While the total is a fraction of what the US consumes, France can't operate without oil (at least a quarter of energy production is directly related to oil). But more importantly and relevant here is the revenue share of the oil coming out of the ground. That's what everyone is competing for.
BP's global revenue from oil production is about $195B annually. Dutch-Shell, which is based in London, has annual revenue of $345B (roughly $540B).
French TotalEnergies has revenues of $237B, roughly half of what the largest British companies are producing. There are other French producers, but they don't come near to impacting the gap.
That's a significant difference. Given that at the moment, dollars for oil is what makes the world go round, minimizing the French impact in the industry prevents them from gaining monetary power and overcoming UK financial interests.

The Rothchilds used to use the military industrial complex to impose its will on regions. In that context, Israel is a tool used to create the chaos needed to justify the military industrial complex's presence in the ME. The greater Israel narrative might mean something to the Jews, but the country doesn't exist without subsidies. The bigger project is financially impossible.
Thanks in part to Israel and the made-up threat of Iranian nukes, France has been blocked out of the Middle East since 1979. France had a lingering foothold in Iran until the Revolution. There was no direct funding from the US for the revolution, but the Iran-Contra plan was launched very shortly afterwards, which leads me to believe the CIA was heavily involved in ejecting the French-friendly Shah.
That's my view on Israel.

Why The US-Iranian War is about France
(I have revised this post since putting a sloppy draft up a few days ago).
Since 1860, the Bank of England and the big banks in NYC have been at war with France. While Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo in 1815, Napoleon III created the Latin Monetary Union in 1860 at the height of the Pound Sterling's monetary dominance. The goal was to create a new gold-backed system based on the French Franc. The union, which initially included France, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium. It never issued paper notes, sticking to bronze, silver and gold. The Austria-Hungarian Empire refused to join because it rejected bi-metalism. Albania joined in 1912 after breaking away from the Ottoman Empire. This will come up again later.
In the mid-1850s in the US, President Buchanan was also interested in sound money reform, but he had committed to serving only one term, and his departure opened the way for the statist Abraham Lincoln, who believed the government should create the currency. Lincoln, against the banks, wanted a national banking system where paper money would be printed, circulated, and regulated. He said it would be “sound”, but with government in the mix that would be unlikely. He also tried to sell the idea that with the government issuing the money, the people would no longer be the servants of it. This alone made his assassination, whoever actually planned it, an acceptable outcome for the bankers.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Britain was actively opposing the Latin Monetary Union. They had been on a strict gold standard supported by banknotes since 1800, and would have to change the weights of its coinage throughout the empire if it joined. Mkre importantly, it would likely have had to give up it's status of global reserve currency and the power that came with it. Napoloen III's plan was a direct assault on Britain's global hegemony, an acceptable state of affairs given they were only one generation removed from Napoleon's plan to invade Britain.
While many in the US in the 1850s saw value in the Latin Monetary Union's plans, Britain saw to it that the US could not join France in the union by funding both sides of the US Civil War, which began just as the union was being formed. The Rothschilds were heavily involved in the Civil War funding schemes. Not to gloss over an important era of American history, but the war and the strains of reconstruction set up the formation of The Federal Reserve System in 1913.
The civil war was a proof of concept moment for the Rothchilds, and they would continue this strategy to weaken both the Latin Monetary Union and France in WWI by funding the Germans and the French armies at the same time. There was a lot of money to be made in this effort, but it also reinforced the UK's efforts to hold France down and gain access to new resources.
By the late 1890s, the union had been weakened by internal disagreements, and it would fade out of history in 1926.
The rise of oil and a new kind of empire
As this fight over the monetary system played out, a new form of riches emerged across the world in the form of black gold. Oil was discovered in the US in 1859 in Pennsylvania. Additional oil reserves were discovered around the globe including Texas and the Middle East. The Texas discoveries were important because in addition to being massive, the Texas refiners began to teach the emerging oil nations how to convert it into various types of fuels, giving the state an oversized influence in international affairs.
Oil was discovered in Persia in 1908. At that time, Britain and France began to compete with each other for contracts as Hungary and Austria promoted the breakaway of Albania from the Ottoman Empire. Meanwhile Egypt was funding the Young Turks in Istanbul. Everyone wanted the end of the Ottoman's control over the region, and England and France were salivating over the chance to gain control of the new oil trade routes.
In 1916, France and the United Kingdom, signed the Sykes-Picot agreement, which would carve up the Empire in the event of dissolution. It was a secret agreement and was never enforced.
Comeptition between France and the UK was fierce for decades, with contracts abounding across the region, with the notable exception of the 1929 Red Line Agreement. Written up by the French, it drew a cricle around the region from the Bosphorus to the tip of the Arabian peninsula. It formed a cartel of various interests, few of which represented Arab interests. Persia was excluded from this arrangement, but France held sway over the fields in the north of the country which Britain controlled the south.
After the first war, France continued to exert itself in Africa, Syria and Lebanon (through a League of Nations Mandate), and in Indochina.
As events moved towards WWII, the bankers eyed the European opportunity to ensure France would be reduced, if not finished as a monetary threat. They were making it difficult for the financial interests to extract resources at the rate they wanted, and the competition would have to be addressed.
Into the picture steps Montagu Norman, the governor of the Bank of England, and Prescott Bush. They saw an opportunity to get something done on this front as WWII started to shape up. They put together a plan to fund the German rebuilding effort. There's This much to this story, including personalities and partnerships, but the short of it is that their funding continued until 1942, almost two years after the German army had crushed France.
Remember, despite the European war beginning in 1939, the American army did not put troops into the land war until November 1942, almost a year and a half after Hitler entered Paris in June of 1940.
Why did American and British bankers support Germany so long? Prescott Bush did not love the Nazis. There was something else going on. Keep in mind that at that point, it had barely been 80 years since Napoleon III imagined the Franc as the world's currency. US companies were deeply embedded in the Middle East Oil situation, and France was a major competitor for the oil fields.
80 years is not that long a time. Think about Bretton Woods. It's been 80 years since that agreement, and we still care very much about that, as much as we are in Iranian oil.
What followed WWII, from French political isolation in Africa, to Kermit Roosevelt's managed coup in Iran in 1953, to America's massive funding of France in the Indochina war almost to the point of France's bankruptcy, to Nixon refusing to give them gold in exchange for dollars in 1971, to blocking them out of Iran after the Shah was deposed, so much of what has happened in the world points to a monetary and resource war against France as UK-US policy.
Now, with Trump threatening to pull out of NATO, Macron is alarmed, and Germany is re-arming and forcing men to ask for permission before leaving the country for some time. Is Germany afraid of Russia? Maybe. But have you ever looked at a map of US bases in Germany? They are all on the west side of the country.
When Texas was afraid of Apache raids, they put the forts on the frontier, not on the Louisiana border.
You can draw your own conclusions about where the UK-US might have thought the real European threat was. With US military bases in UK, Italy and Germany, France is boxed in. And even though France has a presence in Western Africa (another monetary tale), US bases are all along the east coast of Africa. France has no military access to the oil of the Middle East. The country has been vassalized by the financial powers.
Americans don't think long term, but England and France were at war from 1108 when Henry I invaded Normandy until 1815 and the Battle of Waterloo. The war has continued to today, but it has been a financial one since 1860.
The next phase is the trade of Europe to the military industrial complex in exchange for the MIC departure from the Middle East. If the US leaves there as well, don't be surprised if Germany and Russia start pounding France again, and watch the bankers laugh while they fund both sides.
Am I right about this or wrong? I don't know. I'm not a historian, but the signs are there that in the reordering of the globe into a multipolar world, France is about to get pulverized, and the 1,000 year struggle between France and England might finally come to an end.
