I used to think there were two ways of scaling Bitcoin: one would be with trusted entities, i.e. banks, but deployed in a decentralized way that limited liability and government capture, and the other way was with Drivechain.
Given what we're seeing with all the Lightning custodial wallets being targeted, implementing full KYC and migrating to Spark (which is becoming almost the one world central bank) that first option is looking worse.
(To be fair my plan was never to have these companies be the custodians in the first place, but it was a bad plan anyway.)

If you prefer to read then maybe start with the article I wrote when I finally understood the idea many years ago (on that page). Paul Sztorc's explanations apparently don't click easily for most people, but to me they are pretty good. I guess you have to try multiple of these explanations from others until one of them makes sense.
Drivechain enables so much it's hard to describe, we wasted too much time defending the idea from bad repeated criticisms we forget to advertise the benefits:
- absurd self-custodial scaling for payments, such that Bitcoin payments for everything everywhere can finally be a reality;
- enabling everything that can be imagined as working on a "blockchain" immediately in Bitcoin without reducing decentralization;
- all the network-effect, developer time and interest ever poured into other shitcoin projects going back to Bitcoin to make it immediately at least 3x in size and importance from the getgo (with of course much more growth that will come from this);
- perfect privacy (not for all forms of transactions, but at arms reach of anyone -- and could be the default for most payments);
- fixing the security budget (Bitconeirs in general like to forget about this, but someone has to pay the miners) while keeping transactions cheap for everybody;
- finally a chance that Bitcoin will replace fiat once and for all and become the money of the world.

1. Bitcoin can only be saved by activating Drivechain.
2. Core will never merge or support Drivechain activation (or any soft-fork).
3. Miners won't move their asses until they see sufficient real-world evidence.
Any reasonable Bitcoiner accepting these premises should support the eCash hardfork even if they are initially disgusted by the idea of betraying the Bitcoin brand and the maximalist cult (I was myself), because from these premises we have to conclude that the only thing that can save Bitcoin is a real-world thriving ecosystem of useful sidechains paying fees to miners that finally convinces them to activate Drivechain via CUSF.

What does that mean? We chose something and we can never change our minds? No one should have a blind devotion to Bitcoin. Bitcoin was always only our best chance of fixing the problem of government monopoly over money issuance and related evils, not an idol to be worshipped.
If we spot something else that might give us a better chance we should definitely switch immediately.
With that said, Bitcoin is still miles ahead of anything else. If eCash proves to work even a little bit we may have a better chance of miners activating it on Bitcoin and that will be great.
If not, and if Bitcoiners don't come up with any better solutions (it is very unlikely they will, and even if they get a better solution it is even more unlikely that they will be able to activate it) that will mean that Bitcoin will die slowly over many decades. This will be bad as most people will not see it happening. Our only hope in this case is that eCash captures more users from outside the current Bitcoin sect and gets bigger faster than Bitcoin gets smaller. I guess this will have to happen anyway if it has any chances anyway.

Because of custodial regulation all Lightning wallets are migrating to use Spark, which claims to be noncustodial.
But Spark is a central server that sees everything, can block anything and whose claims of "unilateral exit" are at best vastly oversold: https://xcancel.com/francispouliot_/status/2075284584489439668 (see how even at 1sat/vb and a small amount of users -- meaning small transaction trees -- you already lose 10% of your money, at 5sat/vb you lose 40% and so on).
In fact the situation is only getting worse. Before we had a dozen of different custodians spreaded throughout the globe, soon it will be a single proto-custodian controlled by a US corporation.

Ok, these are strong points. I finally understand it.
I think many of these are neutralized if the thing is running on Drivechain separate from the Zcash people and with a completely different initial coin ownership. The issues of undetectably exploitable bugs and the problem of the difference between shielded and unshielded pools remain.
If it's running on a Drivechain then it can be just the shielded pool -- but then we fall on the previous criticism of the toolbox with different sidechains being analogous to the shielded/unshielded situation, and it would also affect a Monero-like sidechain.
The only solution would be for we all to agree to just use this privacy sidechain for all the normal payments.
Like everything else this is so unlikely it's hard to imagine it will happen, but it is much more likely than getting Bitcoin to adopt some privacy protocol natively, and arguably more likely than Monero becoming the money of the world. I'm happy with any of these outcomes.
Either way I am now thinking that Thunder may not be what we want as the main eCash payments layer, so thank you for putting another problem in my mind.

Paul's plan is that everybody will use Thunder for the "money" part. Thunder is not one but multiple blockchains that optimize for smaller transactions and grow in size as the time passes.
I think that can work in practice, but it is so ugly! I would rather have a more elegant solution than blasting cheap transactions into blockchains that miners are running and hoping for the best.
The more elegant solution might as well be something like a big Tachyon chain, which as far as I understand scales much better than a normal blockchain and is fully private and everybody just uses that for commerce.
I could never understand the actual criticisms of Monero people against Zcash (every time I tried to ask I got the answer that it was a "fedcoin", what that means exactly and why I don't know). The Zcash technology looks good to me, but of course I don't understand it fully.
In any case, if Zcash/Tachyon is bad then I also don't see why the daily payments solution people use on eCash can't be one or more big Monero-like chains instead of Thunder. I also never heard Paul Sztorc saying anything about why he isn't pushing for a Monero-like sidechain together with the Zcash/Orchard sidechain L2L is doing, my impression is that that he just likes Zcash technology more and didn't want to confuse things with two privacy sidechains, but I think he should at leat mention the possibility, maybe some Monero enthusiasts would be excited to build it. Paul definitely doesn't think he has all the answers, he is pretty ok with being surprised by drivechain usages he hadn't anticipated.

Because I didn't know how to do it better, you have to first run the crawler that goes through the kind:3 contact lists of all people recursively many times and determines who is worth being included.
Then you have to run the fetcher that downloads the notes from everybody.
And then you run the server/relay process.
You can probably run these simultaneously, but let me know if you can't. The idea was that one would run the crawler once a week, the fetcher like once a day, and the server continuously. More than that is probably unnecessary.
Unfortunately the crawler takes an awfully long time to finish, but that is probably because I'm stupid, so if you or any of your bots know how to improve on that please let me know.

I pasted my bunker code and it spinned a little, asked me to authorize on the signer, but there was no authorization needed, I pressed the button again and it loaded forever, so I tried to stop it and was going to paste an nsec, but then it moved me to the logged in account area, however the app didn't even know my public key as the bunker stuff had failed, so I was just in this area where I was named as "Unknown". Clicking to log out doesn't work.

I've installed 3 Chatmail clients on my phone today (I think Chatmail is the name of the protocol, but everybody calls it Delta Chat, but then Chatmail doesn't present itself as an interoperable protocol either, it presents itself as a collection of software projects and it's unclear whether Delta Chat is part of it or a spin off):

The 3 are basically the same app. I didn't check but they probably share 99% of the codebase. I don't understand.
Also they allow you to share an invite link for others to talk to you, but I couldn't take the invite link from one and paste on the other because there is no place to paste, only a place to read a QR code.
It's not clear whether I'm supposed to share this invite link publicly or if it's a private thing for only one person to message me (the invite link is big and full of metadata in it). If it's private how am I supposed to send it to someone, using another messaging app?
Also apparently they create accounts for you in a random chatmail server, or Delta Chat at least seems to do that, while Arcane Chat seems to always use arcanechat.me (or something like that), so that could be the reason why they have different apps that are almost exactly the same: the hardcoded setup parameters.

Also no, you don't know my argument, I'm not a big blocker, I want blocks to be smaller than they are today.
Someone did invent a way to scale payments without the centralizing tradeoffs: it's called Drivechain.
Here's the simplest way to scale payments using Drivechain: https://www.truthcoin.info/blog/thunder/. I don't like it, because it looks so dumb, but it's infinitely better than Lightning.
There are other ways, though, like Shielded CSV: but all of these methods require a bridge to a parallel network, and only Drivechain can provide a decentralized bridge.
We could have had this 10 years ago if it hadn't been for Lightning or the blocksize war. It's sad that these two things happened, both could have been prevented. Still, if we activate Drivechain today we can prevent wasting the next 10 years.

IRC is nice, but doesn't use Nostr identities and chats can't migrate across servers. Insert these two elements and you get NIP-29.
Still, that isn't what I was dreaming about for 1-on-1 DMs, but maybe variations of NIP-17 is the best we'll ever get anyway.

Things will be muddled in any way or another. Making a new NIP doesn't really change that. You're just moving the muddling to another department, but you'll have to deal with it anyway.
It's like making a new kind with a different content-type, or a new "version". It's all cosmetics for "making a new protocol". Essentially it all comes down to creating new work for everybody to maintain everything at the same time and wrap their heads around the new stuff.
In this case I think it is worth it.
But honestly, I just wish someone did something different. Would be nice to have a more specialized and more efficient Nostr-like protocol around "chat servers" (as opposed to Nostr relays). Reuse Nostr identities, use Nostr for signaling, I don't know, but don't send the actual messages as Nostr events to relays, that is ugly.

No, I don't. I just disagree that you and other designers have the perfect formula for the best user experience. I think the thing is much more subjective and random than you think, and that ultimately there is no formula (the fact that different UX designers disagree among themselves and disagree with their peers of the past is evidence of this).
I also completely oppose hiding the important parts of the protocol, even if that is going to result in more users (I don't think it will, in fact I think it's the opposite of that in the stage we are of early adopters and enthusiasts). But of course there are better ways and worse ways of exposing the internal protocol.

He didn't fork Bitcoin, he just supported Jihan Wu's fork, and he wasn't selling some valueless shares that he made up himself for an arbitrary price, he was operating an exchange and giving people actual BCH. I don't know the details, but that doesn't sound super scammy to me, specially if you consider that no one owns the "Bitcoin" brand, not even the Bitcoin Core organization (I know, it's shocking). The fact that he owned the bitcoin.com domain is more of a failure of the DNS system than anything, the same applies to nostr.com today.
Now what if Nostr was adopted by Facebook and Facebook decided that everybody would just read from the facebook.com relay and other clients followed that decision, then, worse, Facebook started to use a complicated key delegation scheme and everybody else followed on that and everybody was calling that "Nostr".
Then Rover Ger, an idealistic Nostr enthusiast, would say: "no, that is not the original Nostr" and make a client that is compatible with the Nostr we have today and host it on nostr.com and say that was the real Nostr, tricking users who wanted to talk to their Facebook friends, who would then call him a scammer for that.
Is Rover Ger a scammer?

Please help me understand:
If you host your stuff on some relay you control and moderate, then you use a client that only reads comments from that relay that you control and moderate, then you tell everybody to use that client and you link to your page on that client such that anyone using that client will never see anything outside your control, is that enough?
Now if some other client shows up with 2 users and that client chooses to read comments from the harassment-maximalists relay, does that make it a deal-breaker for you?

- the default key is not '01' anymore (breaking change!), now the default key is a pseudorandom key derived from your machine id and other machine-specific properties (this is not perfect or secure, it's only for testing), call "--nak key default" to see yours and set $NOSTR_SECRET_KEY if you want a permanent default
- same for the "--connect-as"/$NOSTR_CLIENT_KEY, it defaults to the same
- you can specify "--auth" when running a bunker or when connecting to a bunker to sign your event and nak will authenticate to the relays if required
- "nak serve --auth" runs a relay that requires AUTH from everybody (but doesn't do anything with the information except printing it)

The most recent #pyramid version has things that you may have not heard about:
- /database page for direct database querying for the admins, along with a button to delete events arbitrarily
- same thing on the blossom side, admins can micromanage and delete things (previously users could already manage their own blobs)
- I have probably mentioned this already, but we have tiered limits for blossom uploads, like you can say "1000/500/200" so people on tier 1 (right below the admins) get 1000MB, people on tier 2 get 500 and people on tier 4 get nothing
- pomegranate operator service (be a partial key custodian for your community)
- a way to request access -- this has to be enabled, but then anyone can request to be invited by anyone else that is already a member on the relay (and has invites available) from the home page, and people can accept or reject also from there
- the relay itself publishes a kind 0 for its own key (I don't remember why this was necessary, but it will look nicer when browsing special relay-made events from other clients)
- an nsite gateway for assets and manifests published on pyramid, see https://npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6.nsite.pyramid.fiatjaf.com/ for example

I think any format will go, including images. An nsite is fully published to Blossom already, that's how it works: publish all assets to blossom, then publish an event pointing paths to hashes so the site can be rendered by a gateway later.

- "nak nsite" command for downloading and publishing nsites from a directory
- most commands now take --sec, --auth, --force-pre-auth flags so you can AUTH when publishing an nsite, for example, and the syntax etc is all shared (please report bugs)
- "nak nip" command for displaying NIP text, pretty printed
- "nak kind" command for displaying information and schema about a kind, with data sourced from https://github.com/nostr-protocol/registry-of-kinds/ (please contribute)
- when specifying a kind in any command you can pass a string and it will match a kind number, try for example "nak req -k 'fav relays' -a [email protected] --outbox"
- a bunch of fixes, most by @npub1937…haj6, and some minor flags added here and there

This is expected, just like programmers tend to write software for other programmers, people from cinema often make movies about the process of making movies or acting, writers write books about writing.
But in the case of Bitcoiners for some reason it seems to be much worse.
Look at how many wallets exist, or services that allow you to visualize Bitcoin things, lend Bitcoin, exchanges in all their shapes, what else?

Because most web pages take years to load one would think it would be a good idea to launch them and switch to doing something else while they load, right?
But no, you are wrong. You can't do that because browsers have decided that they won't run the JavaScript of these pages if they are not focused.
So you are forced to stare at the loading screen of every web page while they load.

I'm not seeing them, but who knows whose fault that was. I'm not aware of my relays blocking Tor exits, I don't use Cloudflare, so who knows. There are some incomplete NIP-17 clients out there that don't connect to the correct DM relays of the receiver, maybe that was it.
I told Paul, maybe he will contact you in some other manner, I don't know.

From a quick glance at the code you have a set of hardcoded relays that the app uses at all times and at no point you try to fetch outbox relays of users or their list of DM relays.
There is another "pool" that the app maintains with other relays. I don't know where those come from, but apparently you blast every DM to all these relays too?

Stuff you publish to your homeserver doesn't have to be signed, so your key doesn't have to be hot.
If one wants to verify if you really said something they have to connect to your homeserver and ask.
This supposedly means that you can do access-control better, since there is no way to distribute your content beyond your home server.
Also because they don't do signatures they don't need a canonical event format, so the content that comes from the homeserver can be of any shape. They like the concept of serving arbitrary files.
Nostr keys can't publish to the BitTorrent DHT, because they use a different signature algorithm.

It's a completely stupid situation, because programmers are simultaneously bad at tests and (in theory) much more expensive, so telling them to perform tests like that is a waste on every level.

I think Nostr would be probably 200% better if we had someone to test apps reliably.
I'm not talking about a "QA engineer" whatever, just someone that isn't a programmer but can install things, click buttons and report bugs.
I have the impression that this is a role that died in the industry of software development, but it is much needed now, and much more in the age of AI code.

I just wanted proof that NIP-17 could work reliably, and now I got it.

However the two clients cited above are nsec-only. This tells me that we definitely need some NIP-4E juice in order to allow bunker-powered clients to have good and fast DMs.
Another thing we definitely need are that clients are ready to perform AUTH with the user main key to relays when publishing, that allows relays to filter out spam. https://pyramid.fiatjaf.com/inbox is an example of a relay that filters out blocked people and people not in the relay unified WoT.

On Jumble they were working pretty well two weeks ago, now they're empty, I have zero chats. I don't know why. Maybe because Coop has refreshed my encryption key. Maybe NIP-4E is too complicated and we have to simplify it.
Coop used to work pretty well for a while but a little before the NIP-4E transition started it got pretty broken and hasn't recovered yet. I'm waiting for @npub1zfs…w445 to finish his mobile app and fix it. Still hopeful.

https://nospeak.chat/ is the first NIP-17 chat app that I saw that works very reliably since https://wisp.mobile/. It is amazing, if you don't have a problem with pasting your nsec you should definitely try it. By the way, two people can chat one using Wisp and the other Nospeak. Mindblowing!, a slap in the face of everybody who said Nostr DMs would never work
As @npub1der…xzpc said recently: "if you know what you're doing NIP-17 works really well".
(I also don't know who makes it, so don't trust it with your nsec!)

Miners selling their stock of coins has nothing to do with them renting their infrastructure to AI companies, that sounds like a non sequitur. And it looks like Bitcoin hashrate is looking pretty fine still. I would also welcome some shift of mining activity from these big public US companies to more grassroots activity, so maybe the video is right that this could be good news.
But things will definitely get dire in some years if Bitcoin remains in the disgusting state of complete apathy as it is. Bitcoin needs a ton more activity, adoption, scaling and real-world usage. Most importantly, all these users have to pay a small mining fee and somehow they all have to fit into smaller blocks.

I've seen a video here some weeks ago and now I can't find it.
It was a dramatic voice reading something like a big tweet, the phrases were being shown as they were read. The entire tweet was a list of complaints about the current state of the internet, how annoying is to make logins on websites, do phone verification, KYC, and then everything is full of spam and so on.
I think it was an old video that someone reposted, something like that.
If you know what I'm talking about please help.

This comes with natural sybil-protection as addresses with money or that have dealt with money in the past isn't infinitely cheap to create, and there can be tiers.
Someone should run a relay that checks for this kind of stuff before accepting notes.
