Yes, I get it, and I can see your points. I can also see why what can be called oversimplification is necessary to get the message across to a wider audience. And, let's be honest, the topic of finance is quite simple: there are assets and instant settlement on the one hand, and there is credit, expectations, and trust on the other. If you and I make a bet today to be settled in the future, we can both still handle it. If one of us is then going to sell his expected earnings from the bet to another man who packages it into a product with a cool name and a good rating,g and if then, many years later, your own pension fund bundles that product into your package .... only then it becomes complicated, opaque, nobody's fault, nobody's responsibility. So in my humble view, the financial mess out there totally justifies simplification in selected spots. But I get your point :-) ... and The Gold Standard may not be a good birthday present for you :-)

There is so much interesting stuff that I read, experiment with, try out, and debug that the day is over before I share any of that here. In addition I have a lot of options (both informed and otherwise) which age/wisdom 😇 prevents me from sharing. And then I have accumulated technical user-level Nostr debt like relay mismatch, embarrassing incoming payment failures, etc. All leading to a busy SILENCE 😁

In the late 80ies and early 90ties I spent all my time on molecular and cellular biology which earned me a PhD in the natural sciences. This is not a bragging exercise but the preamble to a book recommendation. Granted I studied three decades ago, it is nevertheless amazing how much more clarity and insights I get from Nick Lane‘s books. Had he been my professor then I might never have gone down the software engineering path, might have missed Bitcoin altogether 😬. In his book "Scale", Geoffrey West, takes a close look at Biology using the physics toolbox and finds fascinating patterns. Did you know that the hearts of all mammals beat approximately 1.5 billion times? The heart beat rate gets slower as the weight of the animal grows, with heavier animals therefore living correspondingly longer. According to the data compiled in the book, this rule also applied to us, homo sapiens, up to about 1800. Thanks to the technological and societal improvements, our hearts now beat 2.5 billion times on average.
A second finding was that all mammals consume approximately 300 food calories per gram of body mass throughout their entire lifespan. This was also true for us humans before we started agriculture, and our energy flux corresponded to about 100 watts. Since then, it has grown to about 11'000 watts, almost as much as that of a whale.
Suppose unconstrained Darwinian evolution were the only mechanism at play then we would not expect to see "constants" like the one's above. We would see a continuum of values. It was this discrepancy that led West to the research and the findings published in the book that I am not going to leak here, of course.

Freedom is everything. Few people can survive without it and stay positive and constructive; you seem to be one of those few. Amazing 🍀 Last week I visited the "Stasi-Museum" in Berlin (https://www.stasimuseum.de/en/enindex.htm). Even while visiting a museum, I could feel (or imagine) how the lack of freedom was sucking out vital energy. Unfortunately, the value of freedom is often abstract unless one experiences its loss. This week @npub1864…t2tq was serving me well again when I bought a pair of fabulous shoes at Atheist Shoes in Berlin (https://btcmap.org/map#17/52.52509/13.40130). When I told the owner that I thought it was very cool that he was accepting Bitcoin, he said that he no longer does because there were very few customers buying with Bitcoin, and that his service provider had terminated the service. Ten minutes later, he was gladly accepting Bitcoin again. I think he was just early, and that the kind of nerds buying his shoes did not overlap with the Bitcoin kind of nerds. I can see the two subgroups converging... Cool store and super friendly owner.

The following excerpt is from *The Vital Question* by Nick Lane. In his book, Lane explores how the production of cellular energy—through the respiratory chain—is a deeply coordinated process between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA.
In this passage, he discusses the trade-off between fertility and energetic efficiency. Species with exceptionally high energy demands, such as birds, have a very low tolerance for mutations in the genes encoding mitochondrial proteins. Even slight mismatches between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes can trigger apoptosis (programmed cell death) early in embryonic development.
Here’s how Lane puts it:
“For bats and birds and other creatures with high aerobic requirements, the threshold must be set low — even a modest rate of free-radical leak from mildly dysfunctional mitochondria (with slight incompatibilities between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes) signals apoptosis and termination of the embryo. For rats and sloths and couch potatoes with low aerobic requirements, the threshold is set higher: a modest rate of free-radical leak is now tolerated, dysfunctional mitochondria are good enough, the embryo develops.
There are costs and benefits to both sides. A low threshold gives a high aerobic fitness and a low risk of disease, but at the cost of a high rate of infertility and poor adaptability. A high threshold gives a low aerobic capacity and higher risk of disease but with the benefits of greater fertility and better adaptability.
These are words to conjure with. Fertility. Adaptability. Aerobic fitness. Disease. We can’t cut much closer to the grain of natural selection than that.”
In my view, the book’s title is aptly chosen. The Vital Question touches on fundamental truths about life that our society would benefit from understanding more broadly—especially the biological logic underlying how we operate.
But of course… let’s fix the money first.

It's funny how ETH boys are indirectly shilling their coin to Wall Street. Classic XRP play. But it is probably also smart and one of the few thing they still got going for them now that the ESG-supported low-energy argument died. Is there a debugging/installation guide for getting the xftp service up and running (I used again the docker compose from the official installation guide).
