We've had a lot of rain in Tasmania over the past few weeks. A lot of rivers have burst their banks and to top it all, the south of the island was hit by a king tide yesterday.
On the bright side, the landscape is lush and the waterfalls are raging.
This is Lilydale Falls, a minor waterfall in the north of Tasmania. Not really considered one of Tasmania's more spectacular Falls, it was nevertheless doing its thing to the max earlier this week.

I never knew about Dog Vomit Slime Molds until my wife told me on our walk on Sunday. These slime molds can be white or yellow and are also known as witches butter (though I always thought there was a jelly fungus called that).
Apparently, in Scandinavian folklore, it is known as the vomit of Troll Cats 😱😱
They aren't dangerous though they can trigger allergies like rhinitis.

I won my final game to become Tasmanian Open Chess Champion 2026.
I then ran a junior tournament after with about 25 local kids showing up to play.

I'm about to start my first winter season in Launceston and will be able to see for myself what is driving the debate to ban wood heaters.
Even walking on a fairly mild day has allowed me to experience the smell and toxicity of wood heaters first hand and it isn't pleasant.
Of course the big issue is always economic cost both to the government and to consumers. And like other fuels, there should be a plan to transition which is manageable and supportive to households this will impact.
And this plan should be being designed now for implementing assp. But timber businesses and conservative voices put up a big fuss.

In Campbell Town, central Tasmania, they have a statue of Elizabeth Furlong. She was part of a farming dynasty that helped introduce Merino sheep to Australia.
I like the way the town commemorate socio economic achievement rather than politico military like so many do.
And it's good that the woman of the family gets recognition rather than being erased and eclipsed by her male relatives.

Two actions today.
1 A tradie came round to fix some leaks. I offered him a tea or coffee, and I've never received so much thanks for such a simple thing
2 A man dropped some shopping near me so I and another lady helped him pick it up. He was visibly choked by this small act and I asked if he was ok, and he mumbled that he was and we went our separate ways.
It strikes me that simple acts of kindness, community building camaraderie, treating people with respect and compassion, are anathema to some, if not many, people. Certainly the reactions I got today were over the top for things I consider to be basic courtesy type actions.

It seems that echo chamber is the key phrase of the day. Here's my take
Personally, I left Twitter because it was full of bullying and celebrity/influencer worship. I didn't fit in, and felt very uncomfortable.
I left Facebook when my friends and families posts started disappearing and an algorithm started feeding me things I should have interest in.
I haven't used any other social media, except the Fediverse where I have been accepted and feel comfortable, even though my introverted nature sometimes tells me to stop interacting and go back to lurking like on Twitter.
As social media goes, I have found a happy place. I follow what I want, block what I don't, and am really happy with the moderation of aus.social admins. Is it an echo chamber? To be honest, I don't care. I'm not going to the pub with a bunch of people I don't like the opinion of, and that's how I think of the Fediverse, a social environment, rather than a soapbox.
Anyway, I'll go back to talking about chess, and posting photos of Tasmania and cats. And thanks to all of you who happily tolerate me 🙂

I only spent a couple of times at Moomba, I was usually in Ballarat over this weekend when I lived in Vic. Ballarat has a big chess tournament and a magnificent flower festival, the Begonia Festival, over the Labour Day weekend

Australian public holidays are weird. This weekend, Tasmania has an extra day off for '8 hours day', a very specific Labour Day celebration. Victoria also celebrates Labour Day this weekend commemorating the establishment of an 8 hour working day. Meanwhile, Queensland celebrates Labour Day at the start of May, like most of the rest of the World, while NSW has Labour Day in October for reasons I don't know.
This weekend Canberra celebrates Canberra Day because politicians would rather talk about themselves than the average person.
South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day this weekend, because workers like nothing better than to lose their money to bookies and other crooks, while seeing whether their horse wins or dies.
WA had Labour Day last week because they are on a completely different time zone while Northern Territory doesn't have a Labour Day because it's too bloody hot to work there.

Just found out that a young person who I used to coach chess to has a debilitating form of chronic fatigue and is bedridden, light and noise sensitive. They must only be in their early 20s, it is very sad.
A bright note in the sad story is that a friend from the chess world would visit in hospital regularly spending hours at a time in a room where the only communication was silent.
Unfortunately, the visits stopped after hospital discharge, as distance was an issue.
Be kind people, you never know what tomorrow has in store for you 🙂

My head is in a weird limbo zone after spending a long weekend away playing chess. I feel strangely hungover and mentally sluggish. Today will be a day of rest, recovery and getting my shit back together.
On a bright note, I won the tournament scoring five wins and one draw. I was a bit fortunate in some games, but played pretty well generally.

I'm off to Hobart soon to play in a chess tournament over this long weekend. Besides the chess, it means I'll avoid the BBQ's and beers brigade on Monday, and I'll also avoid the crowds of Foo Fighter fans who are going to be all over Launceston tomorrow.
As far as I'm concerned, the fooer the people the better, and most can Fook right off.

This little one turns 17 today. She sleeps a bit more than she used to, and she suddenly likes the dining chair, so she doesn't have far to go when we eat our meals 😄
