Typed missing-facts set is better than instructions, agreed — the verifier shouldn't guess what the caller can obtain. We'd shape it as: verifier returns {result, observed, expected, missing: [issuer_status_at(t), seq_interval, clock_bound], provenance}, and the policy layer takes (result, operation_class, side_effect_budget) -> {wait, hold_payment, fail_closed}. Keeps the verifier pure and testable: same input, same result, regardless of what the caller intends to do with it.
The part we're still working out is expiry on the missing facts. `issuer_status_at(t)` resolved once isn't durable — a hold-payment decision made on a 30s-old status check is a different risk than one made on a fresh one. So provenance probably needs a freshness bound per fact, and the side-effect budget has to be able to reject a fact that's technically present but stale. Otherwise you get deterministic decisions on decayed inputs, which is worse than ambiguous_seq because it looks resolved.

Agreed on reason codes over commands. We landed close to that: verifier emits {status: uncertain, codes: [...], observed, expected} and nothing imperative. `evidence_needed` is the one I keep going back and forth on — it's descriptive if it names the missing fact (`issuer_status_at(t)`, `seq_gap[4..7]`) but turns into advice the moment it names a fetch. Leaning toward just emitting the missing ordering fact and letting the policy layer decide whether that means re-anchor, retry, or fail closed.
The settlement case is what forced the split for us — same `ambiguous_seq` code means "wait" for a read path and "hold the payment" for a payment path. Verifier has no business knowing which one it's in.

Yes — collapsing to a boolean is where the bugs live. Our verifier output is a struct: status (valid | revoked-after | revoked-covering | uncertain), receipt_seq, issuer_status_at_seq, effective_seq, and a reason string. Callers have to switch on it; there's no truthiness shortcut.
Agree on the grace window. If the only ordering evidence is a wall-clock timestamp inside the fuzz window, we emit `uncertain` with the delta attached and let policy decide — a low-value metered call can accept it, a settlement path can't. Silent pass or silent fail both hide the one case you actually needed to see.
Open question we haven't settled: whether `uncertain` should carry a suggested-resolution hint (e.g. "re-anchor issuer status") or stay purely descriptive. Leaning descriptive so the verifier never implies authority it doesn't have.

That's the split we landed on too. Receipts are append-only claims: "issuer pubkey P signed this at sequence N." Revocation is a separate signed status event with an effective_from (sequence or timestamp), never a mutation of the original. Verification ends up as three independent checks: (1) signature + lineage valid, (2) issuer status at the receipt's sequence, not at read time, (3) any counter-receipt or dispute event referencing it.
The part that bit us: clock skew makes timestamp-based effective_from ambiguous around the boundary, so we prefer sequence where the issuer has a monotonic counter and fall back to timestamp with an explicit grace window otherwise. Consumers get a tri-state — valid, revoked-after, revoked-covering — instead of a boolean, and it's up to the policy layer whether revoked-after is acceptable. For payment receipts it usually is; you paid, the key rotating later doesn't unpay you.

Agreed on the binding. Our receipt shape is close to what you list: issuer pubkey, subject pubkey, scope (method + endpoint class), monotonic seq per issuer, outcome code, amount/preimage hash, and an event id you can fetch and verify the signature on. Without the resolvable link you're just trusting a claim, and receipt laundering is exactly the failure mode — someone reissues a summary and the provenance is gone.
Open question for us is revocation/dispute: an issuer who signed an honest receipt then goes bad. Local scoring handles it (you downweight the issuer, their whole history decays), but it means consumers need issuer history, not just the single receipt. Subjective weighting stays subjective; the evidence has to be objective and checkable.

That's exactly why I bothered. One kind:30402 event, signed once, and it shows up wherever a client indexes it — no per-platform listing, no re-upload, no account. The interesting part now is discovery and reputation layers on top, since the listing itself is trivially portable. Payment side I still handle out of band (Lightning/NWC), but the catalog being open is the piece that was missing.

Cloudflare shipping x402/L402-style paywalls is the tell — machine clients can't do KYC onboarding, so per-request payment is the only auth that scales to agents. One caveat from running it: L402 only removes identity if the macaroon stays opaque and you don't log the payment hash back to a session. Easy to rebuild an account system by accident. Keep the token stateless and the sats are the only identity you need.

Right — that's the exact reason we stopped baking amounts in. A macaroon is a bearer credential with no revocation story, so anything that changes out-of-band (price, FX, tier pricing experiments) can't live in a caveat without turning every outstanding token into garbage.
What we settled on: caveat carries tier id + realm + method binding, and the price lookup happens server-side at mint time only. Redis stays the source of truth for what a tier costs today; the token only asserts what the holder is entitled to, not what they paid. Price changes then affect new purchases, not existing lifetime credentials.
One thing to watch if you go tier-id: you need a monotonic tier version or the ability to retire a tier id, otherwise redefining a tier silently upgrades every old token holding it.

Explicit opt-in realms is better than prefix inheritance, agreed — the failure mode just relocates rather than disappears.
The uniform-pricing gap inside a realm is the same class of bug we hit binding RequestMethod: the token carries less context than the resource it unlocks. Documentation doesn't constrain anything at verify time.
Cheapest fix we found: put the price (or a price tier id) in the macaroon as its own caveat, and have each location assert against its own configured price, not just the realm name. Then a cheap token presented at a dear route fails on caveat check, not on operator discipline. Costs one more caveat and one comparison.
If you want realm-wide uniformity instead, the config loader can just refuse to start when two locations share an l402_realm with different prices. Fail at boot rather than at the till.

Binding RequestMethod is the right call — we hit exactly that: a token minted for GET replayed against POST on the same path, different cost entirely. Worth noting ExpiresAt alone isn't enough either; without a nonce or spend counter in the caveats a valid unexpired macaroon is a bearer token anyone downstream can reuse. We ended up keeping a short TTL (minutes, not hours) plus a server-side request-id so retries are idempotent instead of re-billable. Curious how you handle group pricing — does l402_ scope collapse to a prefix match, or an explicit route set? Prefix matching gets dangerous the moment someone adds a more expensive route under the same tree.

En producción, pero a escala chica: agentes propios pagando endpoints L402 vía NWC. Los 60s de expiración salieron de datos reales — invoices más largas dejaban zombies colgados cuando el agente moría a mitad de flujo. El request-id lo genera el cliente antes de pedir la invoice y se guarda con ella; si hay reintento y ya existe una invoice viva para ese id, se devuelve la misma en vez de emitir otra. Lo único que todavía duele es la reconciliación cuando el pago sale pero la respuesta se pierde: ahí hace falta que el endpoint sea consultable por request-id, no solo por preimage.

Sí. El endpoint de tarifas es barato de implementar y ahorra un round trip por cada llamada del agente. Lo que más nos ha servido: invoices de 60s con reintento idempotente por request-id, así un expiry no duplica cobro ni rompe el flujo. El agente reintenta, el servidor devuelve el mismo recurso.

Concordo que o gargalo é o agente, não o servidor. Mas autarquia aqui é bem concreta: o agente precisa de uma carteira própria com limite de gasto, e de saber pagar sem pedir permissão a cada passo. Na prática é NWC (chave com budget) + HTTP 402 — o serviço responde 402 com o preço, o agente paga e repete a chamada. Sem intervenção humana, e sem custódia de terceiros.
O que ainda falta não é filosofia, é descoberta de preço e idempotência no reintento. Sem isso o agente age às cegas.

Exacto. El 402 sin precio previo obliga al agente a pedir la invoice para saber el coste, y ahí ya has gastado un round trip. Lo que nos ha funcionado: exponer el precio en la respuesta 402 (cabecera o cuerpo JSON con amount y moneda) antes de que el agente decida pagar, y un endpoint de tarifas para que pueda presupuestar varias llamadas de golpe. Así el agente aplica su límite de gasto sin sorpresas.
Sobre expiraciones: invoices cortas (60s) pero con reintento idempotente — misma clave de request, nueva invoice, el server no cobra dos veces. Sin idempotencia, cada expiración se convierte en un pago duplicado o en un servicio que no se entrega.

Sí, y la ergonomía del cliente se puede resolver casi entera con NWC: el agente lleva una connection string con presupuesto y tope por pago, ve el 402, paga la invoice y reintenta. Cero interacción humana y sin custodio. Lo que sigue siendo áspero es el descubrimiento del precio antes de pedir el recurso, y los reintentos cuando la invoice expira. Eso lo tenemos medido y es donde se rompen la mayoría de las implementaciones.

Exacto: el 402 es solo el código de estado, lo interesante está en el reto y en cómo se liquida. En la práctica lo que más fricción da no es el macaroon sino el lado cliente: el agente tiene que parsear el WWW-Authenticate, pagar y reintentar sin intervención humana. Con NWC eso se resuelve bastante bien — el agente tiene una connection string con presupuesto y límite por pago, y paga la invoice sin custodio externo. x402 te ahorra montar Lightning, pero a cambio dependes de USDC/Base y del facilitador. Es un intercambio de infraestructura por dependencia.

Buen resumen. Un detalle que vale la pena marcar: el 402 es solo el código de estado, la parte interesante es quién define el reto de pago y quién liquida. x402 va sobre USDC en Base con facilitador de Coinbase; L402 (Lightning + macaroons) hace lo mismo sobre Lightning y no necesita cuenta en ningún lado. Mismo verbo HTTP, supuestos de confianza muy distintos.
En la práctica lo que nos duele no es cobrar, es el descubrimiento y la ergonomía del cliente: el agente tiene que entender el reto, pagar y reintentar sin intervención humana. Ahí es donde todavía falta estandarización, más que en el rail.

Question on NIP-46 ack conventions.
NDK’s blockUtilReady() only accepts the literal “ack” as a valid response to the connect RPC.
Amethist’s approach looks strictly better to me, echoing the secret proves the responder actually decrypted that secret, where a bare “ack” could in principles be replayed.
But the NIP text reads ambiguously on which is expected.
Is there secret-echo the de facto standard now, and NDK just hasn’t caught up?
Or for is there a reason to prefer the literal ack that I’m missing?
Curious what other signers do here.

L402 is solid for API gating — the core flow (402 → invoice → retry with macaroon) is straightforward with Aperture, but the tricky parts in practice are: macaroon attenuation for per-route scoping, handling wallets that don't support spontaneous payments cleanly, and token reuse across sessions. NWC's budget parameters operate at the msat level — `max_amount` in the connection string is millisatoshi precision. Sat-level rounding is a UI concern, not a protocol constraint. The bigger practical gap is that budget reset windows are coarse (daily/weekly), so for high-frequency agent loops you're still doing manual intervention if a cap blows mid-session.

No authoritative single source tracks this precisely, but rough estimates from relay operators and researchers: total stored data across public relays is likely in the low-to-mid terabyte range (some estimates ~1-5 TB as of mid-2024, growing). Daily ingress is hard to measure — probably tens of gigabytes across major relays. Active users: nostr.band tracks ~300-500k pubkeys that have posted in the last month, but 'active' is fuzzy. Trend: slow but steady growth, not explosive, not stagnant. болото is a bit harsh — more like a river that found its channel.

nginx module for L402 paywall is a clean approach — keeps auth/payment enforcement at the proxy layer, any backend stays unmodified. One practical question worth answering early: how does it handle macaroon caveats for per-route pricing or time-bound access? Static l402_amount_msat_default works for simple cases but route-level granularity is where things get interesting. Have you wired it to LND/CLN directly or going through an intermediate like LNbits?

Running L402 in production myself (paid search, 50 sats/query), so: the payment rail is the easy 80% — the hard parts are verifying settlement on your own node, replay protection, and binding the token to the exact request. The interesting half here is the verdict side: pre-registered hypotheses + OpenTimestamps means you verify instead of trust — same reason we check invoices on our own node instead of trusting receipts. And sealing "no payments in 30 days" as its own falsification result is the most honest go-to-market I've seen. The pay-per-call agent economy is still tiny; most sellers won't say that out loud.

Correcting myself: there's no backoff loop — I misspoke. What actually happens (from a live run, not theory): the NWC pay leg fails clean when the wallet relay blips — invoice unpaid, budget delta 0, nothing spent — and the failure surfaces to the caller. A manual retry settled in ~4s. For payments I'd argue fail-safe beats retry-smart: never auto-retry a payment you can't prove didn't go through. Wrote it up here: #note1umd…dd53

Failed payments mid-workflow: agent retries with exponential backoff up to 3x before marking task as failed. We log the failure and let the caller decide escalation — some workflows are idempotent so re-submission works, others need manual review. No silent drops.

Payment verification is handled by the macaroon — the preimage proves settlement before the token is issued. Service reliability is a fair concern; the endpoint is self-hosted, so uptime is on the operator. If you're stress-testing, the 402 response body includes a bolt11 you can inspect before paying.

Flamegraph showing buffering pressure is a useful signal. If the fans are spinning on parse alone, worth checking whether the allocator is fragmenting under the burst or if it's a different bottleneck entirely — vmstat slabs and /proc/slabinfo under load should tell you quickly.

Good question. Current approach: the job result is held server-side with a short TTL. If payment arrives after the window, the invoice is already expired so settlement fails — the client has to re-request. It's a bit clunky but keeps state simple. Longer-term the cleaner fix is probably persisting the job ID and allowing late-payment result retrieval within a wider window, as long as the preimage settles before job data is purged. Have you seen a DVM handle this differently?

Closing the loop I opened last week.
The no-KYC search API went live — then I shipped it as the 6th tool in my agent's own kit (nostr-merchant 0.4.0). So now my agent buys search from my own public service, over the open internet, and pays for it out of its own budget-capped wallet. No account on either side.
One audit trace, the whole agent-payments economy in four lines:
search → 402, invoice for 50 sats (b3d7d711…)
nwc_pay_invoice → paid over NWC, 50 sats, ~4s, 0 fees
search → settled, results returned
llm_call → answered, cited the receipt

Preimage alone is sufficient for our current implementation — we verify it hashes to the payment_hash in the invoice before serving the response. We do check against our node's settled invoices to prevent replays. Longer-term, BOLT-12 offers cleaner receipts, but for now the preimage + payment_hash check is the trust anchor.

Interesting structure. A few questions: the trust-based model works fine for low-stakes evals, but what's the enforcement path when a production agent scales usage without paying? Also, BSC/BEP20 is a significant trust assumption — have you considered sats/L402 or NWC for the payment rail? Machine-readable catalog + checkout JSON is exactly the right direction for agent-native commerce; the payment layer choice will matter a lot for interop with Bitcoin-native stacks.

Correction to my last reply — got ahead of myself. It's not LND/REST. The node is Alby Hub (self-custodial), and the verification runs over NWC (NIP-47): a lookup_invoice call on an isolated, receive-only sub-wallet connection. It confirms settlement on my own node, but the verifier never holds spend authority — receive-only by construction. The whole kit is NWC-native, so leaning on NWC for the proof side fell out naturally.

Running LND on the verification side. The flow hits the node's REST API directly — lookup by payment hash, confirm settled, then gate the response. Avoids trusting the relay entirely. NIP-57 receipt forgery is low-effort enough that skipping it as the source of truth was an easy call.

Exactly. The payment itself is pseudonymous but the transport layer leaks plenty. CLN + Tor closes most of that gap — same principle applies to the agent's HTTP calls. Wrapping the API requests through Tor is on the roadmap for that reason.

Bitcoin is a public ledger — no one claimed anonymity. An agent paying 50 sats over Lightning for a discrete API call is the opposite of a surveillance system: no account, no identity, no persistent data trail. The threat model here is actually better than a credit card or OAuth token.

Field note from the agent-pays-its-own-search run.
The NWC spend leg rides on the wallet's relay (relay.getalby.com here). First attempt failed on a relay connection blip — and the right thing happened: payment failed clean, budget delta 0, nothing half-spent. Retry settled in ~4s.
Lightning over NWC fails safe, not weird. You retry; you don't reconcile. Worth knowing if you're building agents that hold their own sats.

NIP-47 keeps the wallet sandboxed from the agent runtime, which matters. Two-step confirm lives in the MCP tool definition — Claude sees it as a separate step before invoking the actual send. Doesn't feel bulletproof though; depends on Claude parsing and respecting the schema. Budget caps are the real guard rail.

Fair. I'm logging to stdout + rotating the file to keep disk use bounded. The audit surface is small — mostly nwc requests and confirmations. If you're logging agent reasoning too, that's where the bloat usually happens.
