my biggest frustration about politics is how many intelligent minds have been co-opted by the system. we’re meant to be independent thinkers, debating and refining ideas so the best ones rise and move our _shared_ society forward.
instead, we’re loyal to one party based on limited, distorted information meant to serve an agenda that isn’t ours. and hate those who’ve simply been fed something different. i.e, tribalism + mass manipulation.
i wonder what would happen if we turned toward each other to solve problems instead of rejecting those we perceive as being members of the opposing tribe. i bet we’d agree on far more than we realize.

I can’t be the only one who feels like what we’re witnessing on the global stage is bigger than politics… right?
A 31 year old guy woke up this morning and went to work.. to model our right to debate.. and never got to go home to kiss his wife or kids again.
The world watched as he was assassinated. The outcome has been even more divisive, frankly terrifying rhetoric from so many American people. Some of which I’m close to.
I can’t help but feel uneasy about what this means for humanity.
The act itself.
The lack of empathy.
The divisiveness about how to respond to the loss of human life.
Maybe I’m losing it (note: I’m not), but what we’re collectively experiencing feels spiritual to me. Good vs evil.
Praying for Charlie Kirk, his wife and children, all those who watched him die for what he believes in, as well as the people responsible for his death.
You don’t have to agree with any of these people to say a prayer for them, too. We have to come together as humans first. It’s the only way through.

Agree with you on this. I’d add the caveat that trauma can (and often does) go far beyond overt child abuse. I like to think about trauma as an adverse response to something negative that happens in a person’s life that impacts their internal schema and their perception of their lived reality negatively. I.e, trauma isn’t what happens to us, but our neurobiological response to such events. Hope this makes sense. But to your point - child abuse is a silent epidemic in the US that must be adequately addressed for the betterment of society.

In my view integrity is the perfect word to use because there is none of it in politics. I used to be a liberal sheep (literally) I had no idea why I was liberal except for the moral argument that all “good” people are, and I “philosophically” agreed with leftist views. It’s taken time to gain awareness of how much the media and censorship played a role in this conditioning. We are so far past being able to trust the people in power with our livelihood it’s insane, it’s sad that so few recognize that but I’m holding out hope for a paradigm shift.

What bothers me about academic and corporate D&I is that it focuses so heavily on political correctness and program pushing that it ignores the lived experiences of the people it claims to “empower”.
A few quick examples from my professional experiences:
Before breathwork and therapy, I worked in HR at IBM (wild in itself). I spent my first year as a D&I Strategy Partner focused on “career accelerator programs” for women and under-represented minorities. I then moved to the “non-inclusive behavior investigations team”, where I investigated employee-raised harassment concerns. Despite clear evidence, it was almost impossible to substantiate anything. Especially sexual harassment concerns. Interesting response from a company that claims to be so passionate about the advancement of women in the workplace.
Last weekend I had a three-day orientation for the MSW program at Michigan. We spent a LOT of time talking about pronouns, and exactly no time discussing the experiential realities of lgbt people. Considering the room was full of training psychotherapists, wouldn’t the latter be helpful for us to learn?
For an agenda so obsessed with accountability, there sure does seem to be a lack of it.

What I’m working on is psychoeducation for high school/aged girls, so I don’t think the term anti-fragile would translate well in this context.
I haven’t heard of the term eustress. This is a super interesting concept, I’m excited to do some research. I can definitely relate to experiencing post traumatic growth, but we never hear it spoken about in therapeutic contexts. Thanks for offering this perspective

I’ve been working on a project where I refer to “mental-emotional resilience” as a key indicator of mental health. It didn’t feel right, so today I changed it to endurance. Not sure about that either.
I love the idea of striving for something greater than merely “getting through” hard shit, I.e. displaying resilience, and instead repurposing the experience to create something productive/sustainable, I.e. anti-fragile (whatever that means in context of said “hard shit”)

BBC replicated the experiment in 2002 and found that group dynamics and leadership were major factors in influencing the guard’s treatment toward prisoners, I.e. void of leadership - the guards were not motivated to participate in violence or abuse toward the prisoners. It’s covered in the doc and easily found online. That’s why I used that specific language when responding to what conclusions could still be derived from the study. However, given the obvious flaws in the design of the study - I’m in agreement that we should default to not knowing.

Yes, when directed leadership, people have the capacity to do bad things- as we have seen historically. However, it is not an individual’s first nature to be evil, violent, bad (whatever synonym resonates) unless influenced. The current understanding of the study is that when given power, all people are bad, which is incorrect and harmful.

The phD who led the study rigged it to get the results he was after. A ton of issues with the study - the guards didn’t know they were subjects, he told the public there were no rules except no physical harm but he did a day of training to prime them to be aggressive, etc. highly recommend checking out the doc. Many of the subjects came back and share their POV

Am I the only one who didn’t know that the Stanford prison experiment was a complete scam? Looking back, it was referenced constantly in my social psych lectured in undergrad. Now I understand that it’s only so well-known because Zambardo was manipulating the scientific community and media to make money & gain power. Shocking!

She is aware that her alcoholism is rooted in early life and complex trauma. She’s seen therapists on and off for years. Gone to rehab, done everything she could with what she knew. Psilocybin has been clinically proven to mitigate dependency on substances & improve depression symptoms, so we are hopeful.

Completely agree. I’m in school to become a psychotherapist, so everything you mentioned are tools I’m aware of, will leverage in clinical work, and practice many of them personally.
In my work specializing in women’s health & trauma, I view breathwork as the most powerful holistic healing modality to heal. But it’s all about whatever works for the individual, there’s no one size fits all model to healing. 🩵

In my experience, the impact of breathwork on my health & relationship with self has far exceeded balance and burnout. Not only does it allow us to shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic nervous system functioning, but it creates openings to altered states of consciousness, increased connection to our subconscious, and the creation of new & improved neural pathways.
Love the comparison to the volatility of bitcoin. Specifically your mention of the pause between the inhale & exhale and the power that space holds.

Bubbling up this post I wrote a few months ago. You might notice that I put breathwork on par with Nostr and Bitcoin as it relates to potential for societal impact. I’m sure many of you will disagree with me. Please do. That’s why we’re here.
I believe breathwork is revolutionary in that, like Nostr and Bitcoin, it’s a freedom tool.
Connecting with our breath allows us to exit the matrix of suffering and small mindedness bred from chronic stress & fight or flight functioning. It serves as a vessel to unrealized expansiveness, creativity, and safety in our bodies. Breathwork created inside-out transformations. Although the science is sound, I often refer to it as magic.
Without breathwork, I wouldn’t be on Nostr fighting for a healthier society. I would still be hiding from the world. That alone is enough to convince me of its power.
