I'm not entirely sure about preventing wars, but that aside, yes, of course I agree that decentralization matters.
But right now, for most people, social media is about entertainment and/or promotion, or outreach, in case of government agencies and officials. And for that, reach and size of the network is the priority.
We had a chance when the first Twitter/X exodus happened, but we fumbled it by lacking fairly basic usability features and affordances, but also, due to the hostile portions of the community.
I still think it's possible to catch up, but most people who, for now, care about the ease of decentralization are probably already here.

Let me illustrate how this would work.
If you visit https://most-followed-mastodon-accounts.stefanhayden.com/?server=indieweb.social and you have an account on indieweb.social, all the links will open on your server, so you don't have to copy the usernames and search for them.
You could add an input field so people can put in their own server, but even without that, this would make it possible to share a link with people on specific servers, or whole communities.

Interesting thought!
I've also wondered if it's about people trusting companies and startups more than "some random individuals".
Or, maybe it's more about "the devil you know". We all know we'll have our data stolen, ads inserted into our feeds. But most of us have come to accept it?
And there is too much unknown with the fediverse?

Not much of an issue on my end, rather, try convincing a few million people that logging into random websites just to reply to or like a post is a safe and fine thing to do.
But don't take my word for it, let's see how this all look once there are more independent ATProto communities.
We're still very much in the early days.

And I really believe that Bluesky got ahead because it's been essentially a centralized Twitter 2.0, only now slowly starting to open up, and that's already creating UX problems people have been complaining about with Mastodon/fediverse.

Try replying from https://bsky.app. The old "put the URL in the search box" trick doesn't work here.
And developers are disagreeing over "log in with Bluesky" vs "with ATProto" vs "Atmosphere", because the first one erases the diversity of the network, while the more accurate labels are "too confusing for normies".
Plus, "pick a PDS and an AppView and an app" sounds a lot more daunting than "pick a server".

I've been feeling this way myself. A lot of what ATProto does well can be implemented in the fediverse, from what I've been reading, there's just not enough funding to get it done fast enough.
