Regarding AI slop permeating everything...
It's incredibly important to know that right now there is a MASSIVE amount of money and effort by corporations, financial institutions, and governments to get people to use it.
(There are motivations behind pushing that use that go well beyond just making a buck. AI is a layer of abstraction over information control, it's a method of locking in compute control, etc etc)
But that use is still heavily subsidized - from cheap tokens and use subscriptions to local governments subsidizing power and water and taxes for their data centers.
That can't last.
And nor can its current heavy use.
I have no idea how it will look moving forward. So much of AI is propped up artificially on one hand that it will fall if left to its own devices. But on the other hand there is so much money and power behind it that it can last artificially for a long time.
Anyhow. Don't give up hope. Every act of resistance increases its cost and therefore its ability to withstand.

I'm coming at this from several angles, namely:
- technical specs, limitations, and technical ability to abuse
- business, legal, and practical ability to abuse
- group dynamics, actual implemented coordinated actions where folks planned in secret and carried out actions within a framework of operation security, and breaks within that opsec resulting in leaks
- actual examples of abuse (not theoretical, not conspiratorial, but actually documented)
- and personal experience in my professional career working within information security and IT (not in VPN companies) as well as my own experience running my own VPNs
I'm fully experienced in threat modeling, threat scenarios, being a threat, countering threats. The philosophical concepts of "Trusting Trust" etc et al.
But I dont think further clarification or discussion will be fruitful.

- just because any given VPN has passed previous tests doesnt mean they'll continue to be good
If there is the TECHNICAL ability to be abused, it will be abused. If there is a FINANCIAL or LEGAL incentive to be abused, it will be abused.
Lastly, I'm not talking conspiracy theories here. This is a thing that is exposed time and time again.

- The bulk majority of the employees dont need to be in on it. The technical ability to maintain and transmit logs to a third party is a straightforward and easy thing to do.
Look at large ISPs that are required by law to maintain lawful intercept solutions... and ask the bulk majority of people that work there what lawful intercept even is.
So yes. A small "conspiracy" (read business use case) that consists of the c-suite and a handful of IT held under NDA is enough.

All "privacy oriented" commercial VPNs are honeypots.
You can't change my mind on that.
Mullvad VPN has heavy marketing in Washington DC (their ads are plastered all across the metro stops frequented by government workers and foreign diplomats) for example.
The whole "you need to hide something? here we'll hide it for you! Everyone that wants to hide something should put is all in this one consolidated place!"
But they totally won't look at it.
They swear.
No logs, bro. I promise. I can look, but I won't. I could log, but I won't.
So while Mullvad the company is showing their ass, asking what other VPN to hop to begs the question: Why are you using a commercial VPN?
If it's to change your IP address to bypass porn restrictions in fundamentalist theocratic states, then cool. That's a solid use case.
If it's for a nebulous reason like "for privacy" or "for security". Then you might want to see if that tool actually meets your specific threat modeling.

Updates on my town's Food Rescue initiatives.... Some bad.... and some good.
Bad News is we are no longer working with Food Rescue US. To be very clear, they are a wonderful organization and if you have an opportunity to work with them, by all means do so!
My groups model and their model just don't really align is all. Long and short, they were wanting us to get more food rescue routes quicker than we were able to and when we really couldnt meet their metrics, we both agreed that we should go our separate ways.
Quick Lessons learned here:
- Their model works really well when you have a dedicated and paid staff. It wasn't working well for a community group comprised of volunteers working in their (often minimal) spare time.
- If you do have a dedicated or even paid group, they are AWESOME!!! Great staff. Loads of in house support. Great app.
- If you don't have a dedicated staff and are a smaller community group, it might not be the best fit.
Both parties knew this going into it and we had decided to give it a shot anyhow. It didn't work out. And we exited as expected. Alas.
Ok. So..... next part is the good news.
With that!!! We have now joined the Food Rescue Alliance (FRA)! They are a mutual-aid group of mutual-aid groups spearheaded by the Boulder (Colorado USA) Food Rescue group.

They are much more aligned with how we work.
Now, instead of taking orders and meeting metrics from a non-profit corporate model, we operate independently and both rely on and contribute to the greater FRA group members.
This is awesome.
We have access to peer support, best practice information, troubleshooting and guidance, as well as their own food rescue app - Rootable.
Rootable is a Free and Open Source (FOSS) application.

We're getting set up on it right now. We've been warmly welcomed and have already attended some meetings.

what do you mean assume? Wouldn't you know or not know? If you are in your community doing work you would know what others are doing and what others are not doing.
I just got out of a community meeting. Neighbor A and B continue to maintain the decentralized food distribution apparatus of free fridges. They reported that they have three more neighbors that have volunteered to take on cleaning shifts. Fridge B has an issue with one of the fridges tripping the circuit breaker and they're fixing it. Fridge A's community bulletin board is now accessible because they found the lost key for it.
Me and Neighbor C are working on the Food Rescue side as one input into our local food apparatus. We just brought in a new contributor. A gluten free bakery that will be feeding into Fridge B.
Spoke to a neighbor who just lost their job and needs food but has celiac. Pointed her towards fridge B and let her know the dropoff times of the GF Bakery. She is now utilizing the local communities food system and is further supported.
Next month I'm meeting with the greater town's Hunger Action Coalition and comparing notes and collaborating with them to fill in gaps. We also just got plugged into the Food Rescue Alliance which is national and connects our town to other towns for support and education.
I know exactly who is doing their part.
Because I'm doing my part.
If you get out and do something with others you won't have to assume one way or another. You won't have to believe (or not believe).
You'll know.

We do what part we can as and when we can. Interestingly, if you can't contribute - even receiving aid and support without currently putting back in helps the entire system of mutual aid. Drawing on the support of your neighbors is everything.)

Fediverse Question (especially for hackers, burglars, lockpickers, and miscreants):
What is that name of this lock?
I need to replace it. And I need to know what to type into the search bar to replace it.
(The lock mechanism uses wafers. But I'm not looking for a "wafer lock" - like... I can't put a cabinet wafer lock on this).
It's used for locked glass bulletin boards (physical boards). I dont want to buy a new board. I just need to replace the lock. We can pick it open (and pick it closed) but not everyone knows how to jiggle a jiggler.
(side question... I dont even need to replace the lock if it has a standard key)

...Office Document Software.
Nextcloud, originally a fork of ownCloud, has launched Euro-Office, a fork of OnlyOffice (pissing off OnlyOffice). Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.
(I think I've got all that right 😅 Correct me if I haven't! 😂)

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.
Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.
This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

- Yeah, I figure any statement by Duo will absolutely push the whole "its not enabled by default" and its the client's decision to use it.
Which ignores the core point - the employees (once a client enables it) have no say. By even offering this, they put so many people in the position of "accept this or quit" which is not consent.
Especially in the US where one's job is tied to access to healthcare and where many live paycheck to paycheck and if they quit or get fired, they run the real risk of going hungry or losing their house.

- I've been building Free Fridges and Food Rescue in town. Lots of folks are building out solar panel microgrids for them and their neighbors. We're doing a lot more community third spaces (community theaters, beefed up libraries). We have repair cafes and monthly meetups where we bring in something to be repaired for free and then help others repair their stuff for free.
We're building a better world and living in it now.

You can't beat the US military, itself.
We literally have caches of munitions and equipment in ice caves and various other places throughout the world. - A ride to the hospital costs $5,000 and is not covered by taxes/govt. College isnt covered. We have minimal pensions or worker support. Et cetera.
All the public money that could go to social needs goes to violence.
And we're good at it.
You have to go after leadership (not a threat from me or a call to violence). The think tanks, the political apparatus, the corporations that profit from war efforts, the billionaire oligarchs.
The "vote them out" stage is in one year and we have no idea if we'll even have a means to democratically transfer power.
You are in it now. There is no waiting. Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, North Korea, Oligarch Russia - if you've ever asked yourself what you would do in those times and places... you are doing it right now.
If you have means and power, sort out ways to counter the current regime's leadership and initiatives.
If you don't have that power and are just a "normal
person with a family and job", then actively join and build Community and Mutual Aid in your neighborhood. You need to feed each other. Shelter each other. Care for each other's kids. Actively take care of each other. This isn't kumbaya woo-woo feel-good shit. This is removing the threat they have over our heads.
No one wants to and many can't fight back because we are all wage slaves who cant afford not to work for capitalist corporations that fund the war effort.
So build apparatus that lets us get out from under the capitalist boot. Build it. Now. Right at your doorstep. Go... GO!

We had a "good emergency" tonight at our original free fridge!
Someone dropped off *too much* food and it didn't fit into the pantry and refrigerator. There was also a lot of boxes left over!
So a call went out to discord and five people showed up to sort and put away what could fit, clean up the boxes, AND take the extra food to the new free fridge as well as a local "little free pantry" that a local girl scout troop set up!
Oh, fun thing! While we were putting away the original food drop off, two other folks came and dropped off their own supplies. We pointed them to the other fridges/pantries for the future and took what they dropped off as well to spread around.
Also, while we were there multiple families and folks came by and utilized a lot of the food! But there was still so much left over even after folks took their fill.

- Microsoft Edge is a fork of Google Chrome/Chromium
Yes, it is that hard.
The modern web runs full blown applications within a sandboxed browser. It's massively complex. Front End (what the user sees) and backend (what does all the heavy computing on the server side).
There *are* efforts to build new browser engines separate from Firefox/Chrome but they are underfunded and understaffed. Its firefox (paid for massively by Google donations) and Google proper. That's it.

- It absolutely is a security issue, but this is a situation where it's the best we can get.
Librewolf works by forking the main project (which is toxic but not as toxic as Chromium projects) and trying to scrub the bad stuff out.
That sucks (as a concept) and it's a tough job, but there just isnt a better alternative now.
There just aren't any clean Web Browser Engines that are fully functional and useful now. We have hope for other projects building separate web browser engines but those aren't ready yet. We are stuck with Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome/Chromium as the only two engines to build off of.
The best we have is the heroic team at LibreWolf and a very few other similar projects trying to filter out the poison so we can injest it without hurting as much than if we injested the main fully poisonous core project.

Here's some picture's for the concrete slab and electrical outlets for the new Free Fridge in town!
Note: Free fridges don't usually require this level of installation. As long as the fridge has power and a place to sit (even if its on a used pallet), thats good enough.
This church was given a donation with the stipulation that it go to serving the local community, and they decided to install a free fridge and put some infrastructure and accessibility behind it.

Update on the new Free Fridge and Community Pantry in town!
They've completed the electrical work and are laying a concrete slap today. They're also bringing in a person to build out a pantry and paint a mural on it.
We have a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for December 7th where folks will bring shelf stable food and fresh produce to add to the first stocking of the fridge!
Note: this site really wanted to go all in. You really only need electrical and something to put the fridge on (minimum concrete blocks or a pallet). But these folks decided to put donated funds to it as they are focused on serving the community.
I'll post pictures of the ribbon cutting ceremony!
Also also! Two other sites have expressed interest in hosting a free fridge now that they've heard about this one! Once you build the first one, subsequent ones become easier!

Somebody from the community - NOT part of any technical group - just a family... they came in and had an old laptop they wanted Linux installed on.
They saw the post on our town's subreddit and wanted to give their 8 year old kid a new laptop. So we installed Mint on it, gave them basic instruction and a way to get ahold of us in the future
And they went on their merry way!
Y'all!!!! It worked!!! We're installing linux on folks' computers! Bringing life to old systems and moving folks off corporate surveillance OS's!!!!

Alright! Our town has our first Linux Install Party scheduled for next Saturday!
Plenty of volunteers to help out. We got a free meeting room at the library. We're installing Linux Mint as a default (but will be able to install other distros). We're putting together demo laptops this week.
Going to use this as a "first event" to iron out how to do it. Will set up to do it on a more consistent basis next year. May even make it part of the repair cafe and an official library event moving forward.

This commission "advocates for a clean, healthy, and biodiverse urban environment, promotes a culture of sustainability in the city, advises City Council, and works with the City and community on projects, outreach, education, and innovation.
Well that's cool.

I DM'd them and started introducing myself only to find out its a friendly librarian who runs the local library's makerspace.

So I've been going back through my DVD collection and digitizing backups of my already paid for DVD collection...

I've noticed that there havent been many (any?) Proud Boy, Patriot Front, or Oath Keeper demonstrations recently.
I've also noticed that ICE is using common Patriot Front tactics - like arriving in Penske Moving Trucks and a lack of professionalism in regards to pushing, provoking, and handling bystanders.
I think its obvious that the Trump regime has brought all of his brown shirts in under the fold and are providing them with training, weapons, resources, and pay.

I will say this.
I believe this is a watershed moment.
There have been recent class-based assassinations with the CEO of a health insurance company and others.
And, there have been recent political assassinations of state representatives and attempts on the current US president during the election.
But this is the first "big name" political assassination.
I fully expect tit-for-tat responses. I'm worried about a couple that I won't name out loud. There has been a LOT of stochastic terrorism. Fricken powder keg.
Some have called our current situation (prior to this) a "cold civil war" what with the US President deploying armed military to various cities and giving shows of force. Whether that term fits or not, I do believe we're in the midst of a civil war.
This is an escalation.
I expect it will continue.
Join community. Build up mutual-aid. Find folks to protect and those who can protect you.
Modern civil war is distinctly different from the 1800s and we're really not sure how it'll play out. But institutions are and already have crumbled - not everywhere and not uniformly.
But here we are.

Alright! Site plan for the new free fridge is completed. They're laying down a concrete slab and really setting this up! This host has received a generous donation and is actually spending money on setting up a free fridge. I love it!
Next steps will be getting an electrician to come out and put in some outlets. Need to check with the county to see if we need building permits as we're laying down concrete and putting up a little structure to protect against sun and rain.
The host is VERY excited and is eager to get this built in the next couple of months.
And new great news! Other churches and organizations are getting wind of this and are looking into setting up their own fridges for their own neighborhoods!!!!

Well this is amazing!!!
We just got our first host that wants to put up a Free Fridge!!!!
I was going to put in a post of how we have multiple leads out and various irons in the fire, but dang, this one came quick! We've been talking to various folks for the past couple of months and there have been various interest, but nothing has been set in stone yet.
So, I posted a couple weeks ago how our Free Fridge and Food Rescue group got featured in the local town paper ( https://infosec.exchange/@tinker/114949623055200806 ) . Turns out various folks read it and were interested, both in the food rescue and in the free fridge aspect.
We have one free fridge in town hosted by a local community garden, but that is completely run by them. We help keep it clean and we help stock and utilize it, but my group was created to build other free fridges throughout town.
And sure enough, a local church read the article and came to our monthly meeting. They invited us to go to their church and tour it and see what they were doing.
They're a small church that is heavy in working with the Food Bank and doing distributions. They recently received a generous donation with the request that the money be used for community service. They're going to source the refrigerator, pantry, and even build out an area to provide cover and a walkway to it.
The location is great. It's accessible via public transit (such that we have here). It's decently walkable and the city is putting in improvements in the next year. They have a good parking lot and a location that is accessible to the public 24/7.
So I've put together a little project plan:
- Go onsite and create rough site plan: Designate location. Measure out area for concrete slab, awning, and potentially walkway
- Get estimates for outside electrical outlet installation, concrete slab / walkway construction, and awning construction
- Contact appropriate municipality / county to sort out any requirements or approvals
- Complete construction
- Source and install fridge and pantry
- Open to community & advertise new location
The head of their food missions has already sourced and purchased the refrigerator. So wow. Next step will be to go back onsite and do a rough site plan. Basically measure out the spot and sort out the concrete pad dimensions.
This is the first time I've done this... so I'll be learning along the way and documenting it for other sites (hopefully) in the future.
This is amazing. Our first fridge for our group and the second for my region!!!

A key part of the New York City mayoral races was Ranked Choice Voting.
I'm not seeing many news articles mention this yet (correct me if I'm wrong though!).
Ranked choice let's us vote first for who we actually want.... and then put in backup votes for "good enough" candidates and allows us to compromise and find common ground.
It destroys the concepts of "lesser of two evils" and "throwing away your vote".
I hope we see Ranked Choice voting everywhere.

Alright, let's size out a shelf for us.
Quick centering moment...
This does not and SHOULD NOT be perfect.
Don't worry about maximizing space. Don't worry about making it perfect. Don't worry about being precise. If you're really worried, start small and get a feel for it, then make something bigger the next go around.
Also, don't follow my instructions perfectly. I'm building for my space. But you build for your space. Make it cozy. Make it yours. Make it different. Or do exactly as I do and enjoy it, I don't care, it's your's! lol!
We're putting together a place to hold a bucket of water. It need not be complicated or stressful.
Okay!!! LETS DIVE IN!!! YAY!!!
A couple things to keep in mind while we're choosing a shelving system (system used LOOSELY here):
- How much *floor* space do you have. Whats a good-ish footprint. Width and Depth.
- How tall are your walls / how high up the wall you want to build. Height.
- How much space you want between your shelves. Space for the grow bin and space for the plant to grow above it.
- (IMPORTANT!!!) Ensuring it can handle the weight of all the bins filled with water.
- With that, ensure it can handle getting wet. This should be a utility shelf.
So we're growing in doors. You have limited space.
If you have virtually NO space. Then you can do a single-unit grow bin with a footprint of 6 inches by 6 inches, right? You can find a link to that build in my bio page. But if you have a couple of feet, you can build a shelf.
I like to grow out of 5 gallon plastic (it says its food safe... I dunno...) storage containers. Think the 5 gallon "Commander" storage containers found at various chain hardware stores. The dimensions for these are 16.4" x 12.3" x 8.6". I can fit three of these side by side in a roughly 3ft wide shelf. There are many other options, but consider what you want to grow out in a roughly 3ft by 2ft footprint shelf, right? You pick your grow bins, plastic, glass, metal - but we'll use these bins as the example moving forward.
Ok. That's my footprint. Roughly 3ft wide. 2ish ft in depth. That's what I want any given shelf footprint to roughly measure.
Looking around my house. I have a section of floor space that I can push my clean clothes pile out of the way and make room for 3x2 shelf. Heck. In a corner, I can put a 3x2 shelf facing one direction and squeeze another 3x2 shelf against the other wall and it makes a 5x3 L shape thingy... Cool. I'm doing that. Gonna put my lettuce wall in the corner.
My height is roughly 9ft.... holy shit, that's a tall ceiling. Okay... Anyhow, you sort out how tall your ceiling is. You don't have to build all the way up, right. You can build out along your wall if you want more shelving. But that gives you the max amount you can play with.
Now here's the big thing. You're going to want adjustable shelving. That's key. That lets you set up the distance between shelves to tailor it to your grow bins and plants.
I've found two options (let me know if you find more!):
1) Adjustable Wireframe Utility Shelves
2) Adjustable Wooden Storage Shelves
Frankly, the wireframe utility shelves are your best option. They are generally affordable. They are adjustable. You can attach all sorts of things to it with zip ties and the like (good for setting up your lights). They can hold a LOT of weight.... this is awesome. And the BIGGEST THING!!! While they are generally affordable when bought new, more importantly you can often find these used for cheap or even free via craigslist, facebook marketplace, or dumpster diving. They hold up for a long time and people give these away all the time. Go snag some for free.
But! I live with someone else. And they have veto'd it for the lettuce wall. They're cool with a wireframe shelf in a utility closet or garage, but not next to where we are eating. But they bring about an important point. They associate wireframe utility shelves with work (they were a baker several years ago). And that specifically looks too utilitarian to them. They want more wood and nature in their lives. So! I'm going with the second option.
The adjustable wooden storage shelves.
I can stain them. I can paint them. I can make them really pretty. ( I pointed out that I could make the wireframe pretty too!!! And you can!!! But I don't have personal negative vibes associated with wireframe... I must compromise! And I do so gladly and easily. :P )
Real quick aside and to that point... Aesthetics are REALLY important. You absolutely must make these things look pretty. And you can do so very simply and without a lot of cost. Decorate the shit out these shelves. Whether you're going for hygge, or solarpunk, or cottagecore, or for psychedelic jackson pollock splatterpaint. Make it pretty for you and your's. I'm tired of minimalism... no more millenial beige. You can do that.. I don't mind. But make it to where when you look at this shelf, you smile and your heart lifts and you breathe easier. Make your space a place of beauty.
Ok, back to shelves... The one bad thing that I've found for a lot of the adjustable wooden shelves though, is they CAN NOT hold a lot of weight. Like... the one I'm looking at right now, the shelves sit on little pegs that sit in a hole in the side wood. That's shit. Absolute shit. A little bit of water weight and those pegs will pop right out and down goes the shelving.
So, I'll have to buy some metal brackets to hold these shelves up. The wood of the shelf is good wood (not particle board that can separate if it gets wet) and it can hold weight. The side beams can hold weight. Wood is good in compression. Its just the joints that suck. Alright, cool. I'll use the pegs to get the selves in the right place and then I'll bracket them down.
For me, I'm going to go with the Ikea Ivar special: (not an ad). It's what I have used on my current kitchen garden shelf. And I've liked it so far.
Lastly, how many shelf sections (the flat space to hold your bins) do you need? This depends on how high you make the shelf and how much separation you want between your shelves.
For me, with my specific grow bins, I need around 1ft 10ish inches. That leaves enough room for the height of my bins. The height of the plants I'm growing here. And a little space for my LED grow light strips. With that and my room height, I can get 5 shelves in with the top shelf holding a grow bin and me attaching grow lights to my ceiling. I think my math maths... check me if I'm wrong...
Alright! So here are the dimensions for my shelving system. This is for me. Your's will be different. I'm getting two setups with five shelves each:
Height: 89inches
Width: 35inch (shelves are 33 inches themselves)
Depth: 20inches
I'll need to buy some simple brackets for the back. I'm going to buy some pretty brackets for the front. And some stain for futher prettiness.
That gives me five rows of six bins that grow five plants each.
So that's 150 heads of various leafy greens.
If I stagger it out with a new growth every week and if these plants mature at six weeks (first growth - four weeks second and maybe third growth), that means I can get a first growth of 25 plants each week on a continuing rotating schedule!
I can't eat all that lettuce and leafy greens.
I'm going to HAVE to give away a lot to my neighbors for free.

The Kratky Hydroponic Lettuce Wall will be comprised of a couple of things:
1) A utility shelf with adjustable shelving
2) Full spectrum LED "grow" light strips w/ timer
3) Grow bins
That's it.
The utility shelf can be broken down into the following requirements:
- DANGER!!! WARNING!!! IMPORTANT!!!: The shelves should be able to actually hold the weight of your grow bins. Water is heavy. Many shelves by themselves cannot support the weight of the water and will need support. So check the weight rating on the shelves you get. We'll continue to talk about this further as we built out the shelf.
- ANOTHER DANGER!!! WARNING!!! IMPORTANT!!!: You need a way to anchor your shelves to the wall SECURELY!!! You don't want this thing tipping over. You build it too high and it falls on your kid or dog or cat and they may die. Secure this to your wall. Especially the higher you build it.
- Shelves need to be adjustable to allow enough space for the bin to sit and for the plant to grow
- A way to attach the light strips to the shelf above the grow bin
- Bonus: Make it pretty
The Grow Light Strips can be broken into the following requirements:
- They should fit the length of the shelf you pick and be attachable to it in some way
- You should be able to control them with a timer (either on the light itself or set up with a wall socket timer
- Have a method of increasing the light or decreasing the light (easily add more light strips if needed, or adjust brightness, etc)
- Be full spectrum "grow" light. Note: it does not have to SAY grow light. Sometimes lights are like cakes. A regular white cake is cheap. Add the name "Wedding" to that same cake and it gets expensive. As long as the LED light strip generates enough light for a plant to eat, we're good.
The grow bins can be broken down into the following requirements:
- They should hold water.
- They should be fully opaque and not allow any light into the bin itself.
- They should hold some sort of grow medium to allow a plant to grow on top and provide access to the roots to get into the bin to access the nutrient water
- Bonus: Make them pretty
That's it.
No pumps.
No aerators.
No central reservoir.
Just a place to put a kratky bin and grow lettuce.
We'll tackle how to size and shop for a utility shelf next.

Small anecdote regarding Food Rescue in our town.
We have a bakery that we've started working with. They bake fresh each day and at night they would have to throw away anything they didn't sell.
So we partner with them every evening and pick up the baked goods that they would normally throw away and either take it to another org that makes hot food for folks or to the free fridges in town for people to pick up on their own.
They call us each evening before close to let us know if they have any food for pickup. If they don't call, it's generally because they sold out that day (yay for them!).
An interesting pattern emerged though. We would get regular calls on some days and other days were completely silent. We would never receive calls on those evenings. Week after week.
So I asked about it one time when doing a pickup and the baker told us that those days were staffed by a woman who had experienced a lot of trauma. She specifically would not call even if they had food to pick up because she never wanted to be in a position where she was alone with a man after close.
That seemed very prudent, reasonable, and safe of her given her circumstances and experience.
We took the time to learn about our neighbors and worked with the woman to meet her needs for safety and comfort. We found out that she was much more comfortable with another woman or femme presenting person doing the pick up. We found a couple of gleaners that were willing to do the pickup and they went over during business hours when it was slow and just got to know the baker.
They built trust and established safety guidelines and now we have regular calls during these evenings as well.
The lady was very very very happy that she could help feed people and was very happy that we were willing to work with her to find a solution that brought her comfort, peace of mind, and actual safety.
I thought y'all might like to hear that. We'll find a way to take care of everyone.

Someone dropped off a massive food rescue haul to our free fridge and community pantry today.
They're not part of my program and we're not sure who's doing it. This is awesome. It means there are others outside of our volunteer group that does maintenance on the fridges and outside of the group that I'm working with to build out our formal food rescue program.
This is huge.
This means we have successfully built post-scarcity *infrastructure*!!!
Folks are using our fridges both to contribute and to utilize. Folks that have nothing to do directly with the core group of maintainers. Wow.
We need to build more free fridges. This one is running out of room.

I would argue the exact opposite.
Much of our current games are EXTREMELY limited and constrained in scope to only fighting and beating the crap out of others.
There are other problems to solve. Other obstacles to overcome. Other drama to happen. Even other conflicts.... that don't involve violence.

- Who would sue and on what grounds? (I'm not a lawyer, but I think threat modeling that out is important - so... sincere question that should be explored more!)
Big thing is as this is open sourced, ideally, others would fork the build and tweak it and improve it, right? Even the instruction set is open sourced... so once those get out, even if the original creator no longer maintains it, the idea, concept, build, and implementation are still there.
In that way, it's resilient to attack.

This is an exceedingly solarpunk idea and could be a core aspect of a post-scarcity world as it relates to healthcare.
They have information about abortion medication (Misoprostol), ADHD medication (Vyvance), and more.
There are obvious issues - especially around quality control, safety, effectiveness, and application. And the makers address this - but wow. Just wow.
I very specifically have not verified any of this. But I'm incredibly interested in diving in and learning about it and its feasibility.

(To be clear they asked for help getting food. I didn't have cash or anything on me. He had checked the free fridge but it was empty of usable food - it had cans that couldnt be opened... good for families but not good for people without a can opener, etc et all - which means the community fridge is being used. Which is good.

Ok! Wasn't a scam! Just a sign on offer for joining the gym and it was a good offer.
I ultimately didn't go through with it because:<li>gym was too far away (more than I realized by looking at maps beforehand)</li><li>the process for canceling at this gym was more than just telling them to cancel the membership</li><li>the specific workout did not fit my body constraints</li>
That said! It was a cool place with solid folks. So hopefully others can take advantage of it.

Going to a scam "transition your body over six weeks" thing at a local Anytime Fitness.
If its a "let us take pictures of you and use them for marketing and not pay you but train you for six weeks" I'll do it. I've traded my soul and likeness for less.
But if its a "sign up for a free trial that you cant get out of" I won't.
Either way I know its a scam and I'm still walking into a trap...

Is this the hacker's / privacy advocate's way of acting out and putting one's self into harms way needlessly because of a traumatic event(s) and losing all care? I should talk to a therapist about this.

- Yeah, I wouldn't dismiss this as kids being kids. They're adults. And you're absolutely right. They are putting the pressure on institutions that stand to lose a lot of money if they don't listen. That's good leverage.

- So genocide is a very specific term.
You and I can go back and forth on the concepts of assymetrical warfare, responses of Hamas to colonialization, power dynamics, etc. But whatever violence Hamas commited and whether or not it was justified cannot be considered genocide against the Israelis.
Even if we set aside the tit for tats and any lead up to the current situation, Israel has a nominal right to respond to violence, even in kind.
But.
Not at this extreme and not against its current and continuous targets.
There is a concept of proportional response and justified response, and Israel has gone well beyond that. It is genocide now. And genocide is never justified.
