The internet definitely killed BITNET relay, but the concepts it pioneered live on in IRC. AFAIK UUNET news and readers still exist but are not installed by default on any modern systems.
It's cool and interesting to see new tools like #bitchat incorporate concepts from both. BITNET relay used /<command> syntax and UUNET was a decentralized store and forward, P2P relay based system.

While a student in the late 90s I worked the weekend graveyard shift as a datacenter "operator". My primary duties were change the 1/2 inch backup tapes and racking them with their corresponding green bar printout logs. I also cleaned the backup drive heads with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and made sure all the nightly batch jobs finished.
I also read Usenet news, chatted with strangers on Bitnet Relay and played a lot of NetHack. Good times.

Re 8: how will the socialist/communist/authoritarian govs pay the enforcers of their policies if over half of capital/wealth is difficult or impossible to confiscate? If it's the rich elites footing the bill will they really be able to sustain their position in a new hard money (bitcoin) world?
My understanding of the most recent hard money era is it tended to empower the productive but also improve the standard of living and thus autonomy of even the relatively unproductive due to monetary deflation, improved capital allocation and tech innovation.

1. Is there any proposed legislation in the US to remove the penalty for insurers to use #bitcoin as backing for BTC denominated policies?
2. If an insurer was able to use and custody BTC to back a policy who would/could insure that custody? In wouldn't make sense to take a BTC denominated insurance policy from an insurer who holds their BTC with some shit place like coinbase.

What ever the number is it needs to be more.
According to this article there are around 52 million "every day" millionaires in the US worth between $1-5M. It should be trivially easy for these people to own and self custody one bitcoin (except of course the obvious 21M BTC reason).
We need more easy to use self custody wallets like Unchained, Casa, AnchorWatch, Proton, Bitkey, Liana, Sparrow, etc. Bring on all the projects with what ever models/trade-offs work to somehow put the keys in users hands.

Phoenix is the mobile wallet, but there's also a "headless" API version of the software that can run on a desktop or server. But to use phoenixd you need other software like @nprofile…fy4z Hub (https://guides.getalby.com/user-guide/alby-account-and-browser-extension/alby-hub/introduction) if you want a UI on top of it.
One issue you'll have with the phoenix mobile app and bolt12 is your phone app needs to be running to receive payments, at least I just tried to send a little payment to you above bolt12 "offer" and it didn't work because I suspect your phoenix app isn't running. But if you use phoenixd on an always on machine this wouldn't be a problem.
And, yes you can tell you have a bolt12 "offer" because it starts with `lno`.

It looks like Ocean is recommending CLN (https://ocean.xyz/docs/lightning) but as long as they use standard bolt12 I don't see why it wouldn't work with phoenix wallet or phoenixd. Looks like you just need to create the config for your bolt12 offer and sign it with an on-chain address key. But it's not clear to me which on-chain key you need to sign with.

They already exist. For realestate they are called a deed and are issues and enforced in my country by the county. For business shares they are issued by the companies , listed on exchanges and enforced by local courts. Ultimately to “tokenize” a real world asset you need a real world enforcement system.

My recipe for lazy meatballs:

Square has millions of terminals out there, I'm pretty sure the problem is more about training than technology. The front line retail works need to be able to handle all the bitcoin lingo and qr codes and different ways payments can fail. How do you handle refunds? what happens if customer says payment went through but it doesn't show up on terminal? Anyway I'm sure it will happen eventually but it's still early days in bitcoin land.

I agree it'd be great if customers could pay at square terminal with bitcoin, but at least merchants now have the option to automatically convert some of their sales to bitcoin. I hope this is a first step to future full bitcoin/lightning customer payment support.

That was my thought exactly when I heard the interview from @npub1ahx…5ech . A better product IMO would be whole life insurance where you , the insurance co, and a third key custodian hold what ever btc you put in. At the end your heirs get that btc back. The only reason to do it is the tax savings. Insurer makes money on flat custody fees and from loans they make to you against your btc held.

Better to see the deadbeat states default on their bonds and let the market downgrade their creditworthiness and/or shut them out completely.

My summer of bitcoin student @npub1d2x…eu8n really went above an beyond and even got a PR merged into bitcoin core. He took on a challenging project to make the BDK bitcoind_rpc crate work with prunded full nodes by using the scantxoutset rpc command.
