Getting close to submitting another article, or actually a revision. It is always such a great feeling to get stuff done.
Especially in this case. This was supposed to be a low-hanging fruit, but as is customary, it ballooned into a rather heavy revision due to peer-reviewer comments. As annoying as this is for a "low-hanging fruit", the outcome is now much improved, even if the results did not change much, and I am rather happy.

Mun on näköjään pakko kertoa omat vinkkini, joten anteeksi jo etukäteen 😅 Omassa kokemuksessa lehtien reunat ruskistuvat kasvista riippuen joko liiallisesta lannoituksesta tai voimakkaan suoran valon ja lehtien pinnan kuivuuden vaikutuksesta. Lisäksi jos kasvit ovat olleen samassa ruukussa vuosikausia niin kannattaa vähintään multa vaihtaa tai jopa siirtää isompaan ruukkuun tuoreen mullan kera.

A Finnish citizen petition to lower the VAT of repair services passed the threshold of 50 000 votes meaning the petition will be taken to the parliament for discussion and hopefully the VAT is lowered as a result, as more affordable repair services (clothing, shoes, electronics, bicycles etc) not only support local businesses but also #sustainability and #circulareconomy!

Interesting things going on, at least in the research group that I am working at.
Several members have expressed their dissatisfaction with recent #Microsoft and #Office365 developments. Apparently, every file on University of Helsinki OneDrive will have to be provided with descriptive metadata to improve Copilot365 usefulness, essentially meaning our research data etc will be gobbled up by AI.
As a result, some colleagues are not only switching to #Linux but looking at #Nextcloud. Hooray!

I wonder what the situation is with #Mastodon apps for #Android these days. At one point, the official app was very bare bones, and folks recommended using #Moshidon or #Megalodon for better access to the full Mastodon experience. Is it the same still?
I have been using Moshidon for a while now, and I used to run Tusky. Having checked the last update, Moshidon got updated last summer, the official app a few days ago, and Tusky in September.

My hometown of #Helsinki has been able to reduce #traffic deaths to zero in the past year. Quite remarkable!
This is likely the result of the current traffic plan of the city, which aims to improve safety in traffic through lowering speed limits, and improving #biking and #pedestrian infrastructure.

Maybe you or somebody you know has a #Windows10 computer, which works perfectly fine, but will lose support on October 14 because it cannot be updated to Windows 11 for hardware support reasons.
Please, do not turn the computer into unnecessary e-waste but keep using it and give it a new life by installing #Linux on it. There are plenty of advantages in doing so, the biggest one being it's waaaayyy cheaper.

Our article lead by the brilliant Hanna-Mari Pienimäki with @npub12w7…azj6 received an award for being a #TopViewedArticle in the Journal of #Sociolinguistics.

In total, our data contains mobility flows of 2,275,868 students, whose mobility is tracked between 152,410 origin and destination pairs across eight years. The spatial units we have used in the spatial aggregation correspond to the most recent #LAU and #NUTS 3 versions for each year.

We used #Photon and #Nominatim #geocoding services to convert the textual place names into geographical locations and aggregated them on the #NUTS and #LAU levels to support usability of our data.
Geocoding the data was not simple. Many place names were entered into the Erasmus+ database manually resulting in diverse place names containing national spellings, typographical mistakes, character encoding errors, and national scripts, which required manual corrections.

We selected mobilities from students aged 18 years old or older, which lasted for 90 days or more. Our data can be used to examine #regional attractiveness, cross-pollination in #Academia, regional #BrainGain and #BrainDrain dynamics, and much more. We provide our data on #LAU and #NUTS levels for easier use in research, regional planning, and policy making.

It is now illegal to transmit personal information of EU citizens to cloud infrastructure in the #US as they won't be protected by the #GDPR.
Many European service providers will have to move quickly to avoid fines, but eventually #EU data will be held in the EU, benefiting companies in Europe, and supporting #DigitalSovereignty.
That means AWS, Azure, Google and iCloud can lose a sizeable chunk of their customer base if no moves are made. I am all for it.

#LightPollution keeps coming up in the Finnish media.
This time, the largest newspaper has a smaller piece on #LightTrespass, a really annoying form of light pollution. Essentially, a sports field in #Oulunkylä had some new and very bright lights installed, which cause problems for residents of nearby buildings. As one interviewee says, "It's like the headlights of a truck would be pointed at your windows constantly."

This is making the rounds on Finnish social media.
A large association for Finnish construction companies, #Rakennusteollisuus, decided that they needed an English version of their website but apparently they didn't want to pay an actual #translator so just used some free #LLM with hilarious results.
They've fixed it now, but for a short while there was some comedy gold to be found.
P.s. I didn't find these, I've no idea who did.

A really pleasant surprise.
Letting go of my old desktop computer and receiving a newer one at work was essentially painless. No data loss, no apps that won't work anymore, everything works.
Not only did I jump about 6 years forward in hardware, but also got the brand-spanking-new University of Helsinki #Linux distribution installed.
