but putting this in on the website gives the owner your IP address, possibly reading cookies in your browser, browser fingerprint... enough to link it to a person in some cases if they cross reference it with a databroker

Can someone explain what the value prop of Proton Mail actually is?
So you get an email account that can only do encrypted emails to other ProtonMail users so you can only safely email the other people you know that also use it and most people you know are probably not going to be using it because they also don't see the value/network effects benefit to make it worth their time?

if your protocol can validate providence of the data and prove nobody's lying because of math, you can trust it
as long as users are decoupled from a specific server (probably because they directly control a private key), users can be nomadic
if anyone can join the network, you're permissionless and the decentralization is not just technical but also social
at this point you probably have the basis for a protocol that properly fits the definition of "decentralized"
the overhead of this limits the use cases today, but maybe some day we'll look at all of this like a simple operation

on Pleroma if you make a post and mention a remote account of a user that does not exist it will make the submission hang for 5 seconds.
Mastodon likely has a similar problem because it's the same API implementation -- POST /api/v1/statuses has to return the status object you just posted (why?) and if there's a user you're mentioning that doesn't exist or isn't known in the local database it has to do the whole webfinger dance to look it up... which is SLOWWWWWW
you can validate this by trying to mention e.g., @[email protected] and click the Post button
This is retarded and bad design, so much processing could be involved in submitting a post. Returning the status should have been optional; posting should have been completely async
