first time paying with bitcoin at a Square POS. I didnt notice at first so I bought some stuff with my card, then after everyone behind me ordered, I went back to talk to the employee asking if I could try to buy one more thing with bitcoin. She looked at me confused because she didn’t know that was possible, said she hadnt seen anyone do that before. She seemed nervous and thought she needed to do something on the POS terminal but I just tapped the slider in the top left corner of the screen and it pulled up the QR so I payed it with my home lightning node via Zeus, she didnt need to do anything on her end. I showed her the confirmation on my phone and she said her “trepidations” were unwarranted😂 Grist Bakery in Missoula, MT. The cardamom knot was amazing

i did dice rolls and passphrase so my single sig was theoretically safe, but a HWW company retirement attack was definitely not in my threat model (an unknown unknown). I loved single sig security/simplicity tradeoff and felt very comfortable with the setup. Setting up multisig was a massive pain in the ass (way more things you have to think about) but now that I know about this threat, I can’t go back.

the idea with multi-vendor multisig is that you’re protected against any one of the vendors going down at one time. it is much more complicated though and introduces a lot of ways you can mess up yourself and lose your own funds because you don’t remember how you set things up. i wouldnt trust coldcard with any funds ever again because 1) they had an egregious error in their security code that people are arguing either represents extreme incompetence or intentional malice (which would mean a long jail sentence for the creators, 2) the code is still not open source (like most of the other HWW options i listed) so you can’t verify that there are not other vulnerabilities, 3) CC will likely be sued and their company will not be able to make it financially, this means that the wallet firmware won’t be maintained and any new security issues can’t be patched and any updates to bitcoin in the future won’t be supported, 4) there are a lot of people in the bitcoin space working together right now auditing the codebases of all the open source wallets and disclosing any vulnerabilities. it doesnt seem like the other HWW’s had any vulnerabilities that could have resulted in loss of user funds like this one, but they are nonetheless strengthening their security and hardening their codebases. At the end of the day, CC failed at the most basic of security tasks, so they are dead to me. If you just had your bitcoin in one of the other single sig wallets it’s possible that they would have never fallen because their security code is not flawed, but this episode taught me that unless I personally have verified the code, I am risking losing all my funds at some point in the future. So for me, personally, I want to mitigate that risk with multisig. But the final decision is up to you. If you are not technical and feel the risks of losing your own funds with multisig are higher than the risks of being rugged with single sig by one of the HWW companies, then don’t do multisig. One other option that is sort of unique is the bitkey which is a collaborative custody multisig which would protect you from compromise of one of the keys but you are also putting sole trust in Block to secure your funds. They do make it much easier for non-technical people though and would help with backups and wallet recovery

one of my pet peaves is when people try to assign a growth rate to bitcoin, like it is “supposed to” “go up” 40% every year or something like that. To me, bitcoin is not “supposed to” do anything. Its growth should be measured as a function of how many people use it, not some fake number that depends on how many fiat units are added to the system at any given time. You know that anybody who quotes some CAGR number that they want from bitcoin only cares about fiat gains and remains in the fiat mindset. I agree with you that instead of spending so much time trying to figure out how bitcoin will “improve the return and diversification” of our “portfolio,” that time would be better spent trying to figure out how we can pay for as many of our life’s expenses using bitcoin

Bitcoin is reality. and reality is harsh. if you don't have the entropy protecting your keys, there is no way to save you. Don't trust, verify is not just a slogan, you actually have to DO it yourself OR you risk the consequences (and bitcoin has shown us time and time again that any vulnerability will eventually be exploited)
At the same time, it's pretty much impossible not to have SOME trust unless you personally go through the code line by line (which is unfeasible), so you can mitigate that risk with multi-vendor multisig (multisig introduces a whole new list of ways you can foot gun yourself so, again, you must understand each aspect or you will inevitably get rekt)

Funny how unimportant BIP-110 is in the face of a self-custody vulnerability. I’m upset I wasted so much of my time trying to understand both sides of the debate when I could have been focusing my attention on things that actually matter. The next “upgrade” to bitcoin better be quantum resistant signature schemes and not a stupid “spam” filter that doesn’t work and causes a chain split all while onchain fees are 1-2 sat/vB

no, not safe. if you didnt do at least 100 dice rolls the actual entropy used to create your seed phrase was 32 bit (guessing one person out of half the people on earth) rather than 256 bit (guessing one atom out of all the atoms in the universe) due to a bug in the firmware so the attacker can guess your private key

i would move from coldcard to a different wallet unless you did at least 100 dice rolls when creating the wallet AND have a strong passphrase. MK3 funds most at risk. Other coldcards will take longer to crack so there’s time to migrate calmly and intentionally.
