I contacted Richard Holden, MP for Basildon and Billericay, about legalising regulated pepper spray for self-defence, given the level of sexual assaults and violent crime. His office replied that while they understand why people want something they can use to protect themselves, the dangers of noxious substances and other weapons mean it will not happen
That is the policy. Police can carry incapacitant spray. Members of the public cannot. If they do it is a minimum of 5yrs in prison
The government has also confirmed it has no plans to allow pepper spray or similar tools for civilians, citing the risk they would be used by criminals or used irresponsibly. Fair enough — those risks exist. But then the question that never gets answered is this

Mr Tait, who is from Glossodia in the rural Hawkesbury region of Sydney’s north-west, worked across 62 childcare centres and early education centres between 2009 and 2025. He is facing 329 charges, including 162 counts of producing child exploitation material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent. He is also charged with 24 counts of aggravated use of a child under 14 years for the production of child abuse material, as well as 18 counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 10 years old.

The "Beastie House" was one of the worst examples of child abuse ever reported in Scotland. Two women and five men were all convicted of gang raping a child and abusing other children in a drugs den in Glasgow, where heroin and crack cocaine were used. They were given sentences of between eight and 20 years in jail before they can apply for parole. Social work and other authorities were in contact with the children involved in the case but failed to act for 12 years. They took the word of the abusers over the terrified kids, and even branded one of the kids "nasty" and "streetwise". They presented as filthy and suffering horrendous dental problems. One child was described in a learning review published on Wednesday as trying to stop a school nurse leaving their residence and on another occasion banging on a window begging a health visitor not to leave. The independent report found these incidents were rationalised as “challenging” behaviour rather than recognised as indicators of distress. Throughout a course of years, the children were described as being dirty, hungry and as suffering from untreated medical issues, including reports from within the community, their school and social workers.
The learning review noted a “pungent smell” coming from some of the children at times, including a smell of urine from one, noted from a local community group. Despite these repeated warnings, the children were not taken away from the perpetrators until 2019. Social workers were presented with a multitude of instances of harm and risk but repeatedly refused to put children on the child protection register, allowing abuse to go on. The children were known to run feral and begged food from neighbours, yet they remained within reach of the inhuman abusers who were allowing others to do the same. The report states: “In this case 25 risk factors were identified in total but nor prioritised or evaluated. The protective factors identified were based on future actions agreed .. rather than past evidence of sustained improvements.“ Social services workers also failed to act in the face of “absolutely appalling” behaviour witnessed from one adult to an abused child.

Her Lamotrigine-based medication is one of hundreds of everyday drugs that are now extremely hard to get hold of in England. She has other medications that she can easily get, but the one that helps her to safely live her life and go to work is the one that she struggles to get access to. "In the last few weeks I haven't been able to get the right medications and my seizures came back. I fell and hit my head and have a big scar across my back now from it," Chloe says.
Supply problems mean people like Chloe are all too often leaving pharmacies up and down the country without the medication they need. Shortages are caused in part by surging global prices. However, the problem is also being exacerbated by a complicated process of funding medicines. The NHS pays pharmacies a fixed price for each medicine it dispenses. Pharmacies are then expected to source the drug for that amount, or less. When the price of a drug rises above what the NHS pays, the medication is placed on the government's price concessions list. In April, this hit a record high with 210 named medications. Pharmacy owners will then automatically be reimbursed for drugs on the list at the new price. However, when market prices rise suddenly – often above the original tariff and even above the concession price offered - pharmacies end up dispensing medication at a loss.It makes it harder for them to buy enough stock for all of their patients and increases the chance that people will face delays or sudden shortages.
The Epilepsy Society has already identified three deaths in the last two years where a lack of medication was a contributing factor. The situation is also putting pressure on pharmacy owners. In Shepperton High Street, in Surrey, pharmacist Akash Patel is making up a monthly prescription for another patient with epilepsy. This month he cannot complete it as some items are not available. The pills he can provide will leave the pharmacy out of pocket by nearly £9. Medicine prices are rising because it is becoming more expensive and more difficult for manufacturers and suppliers to get medicines into the UK. Global tensions have pushed up energy and transport costs, and many medicines rely on ingredients made from oil, which has also become pricier. At the same time, some manufacturers say prices have been kept so low that distributing certain drugs is no longer viable, leading to shortages that drive up wholesale costs for pharmacies.

A 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm at the Royal Albert Dock at around 7.55pm, which saw police cordon off the area near the Tate Liverpool museum. He was rushed to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. A witness said they saw the victim 'covered in blood' in the wake of the assault. The terrifying developments have seen officers at Merseyside Police temporarily granted additional powers when patrolling the area. The force introduced a Section 60 order on Thursday, which gives cops enhanced abilities to stop and search until 1pm on Friday.

These days, planners seem to promote ugliness as some kind of quasi-political message. Any British town will show it clearly enough: housing estates are poured in grey concrete, new towers go up that could be anywhere in the world, and ring roads – like the one encircling my own home in Glasgow – hem us in with an almost defiant lack of charm. It’s a truly soulless business, modern British urban planning, and has been since the middle of the 20th century. These are not places designed to be loved. They don’t inspire numinous awe, like cathedrals of old; nor do they suggest elegant restraint, like a nice Georgian mews. They function, and we are increasingly told that that is enough. I’ve come to think that ugly architecture and town planning aren’t neutral things – rather, they are symptoms of a spreading disease. We no longer assume that the environments we inhabit should uplift us, or delight us, or make us feel big, or make us feel small, or do anything other than contain us in concrete. Our willingness as a society to provide beauty is waning. And when it disappears, it is the working classes who feel its absence most acutely. Ask anyone who grew up on a 20th-century council estate. It is ordinary people, stuck in modern housing, using those ugly carparks and civic buildings every day, who are left with the consequences of a political choice to uglify the human world.
A similar pattern seems to have got its fingers into our broader culture, though this time perhaps led by tech bros and Silicon Valley types. Art and literature, and the magnificent inner worlds they mirror and enhance, are giving way to TikTok and all that rubbish. As a children’s author, I see this played out particularly harshly. Fewer children read for pleasure, and fewer families pass on the habit of sustained attention to language. I recently ran a creative writing workshop for a school. Many of the 11-year-olds that I was teaching had a reading age of six. Because reading, once a shining portal into other worlds, is increasingly shunned. Something vital is lost as we lose the ability to delight in words and stories, to engage with philosophy and learn our histories. As with architecture, we are no longer uplifted, but are instead dragged down...........................................

The Scottish National Party (SNP) has turned Scotland into a laboratory for “weird and wacky ideas”, an analysis of its record in power has found. Russell Findlay, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, used April Fool’s Day to highlight a series of proposals pursued by “woke” SNP ministers and their “extremist” Green allies at Holyrood. They included Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister, “launching” a ferry with painted-on windows and a plywood funnel, Ms Sturgeon apologising to people accused of witchcraft, and the SNP declaring there are 24 genders. Speaking ahead of May’s Holyrood election, Mr Findlay said the SNP was “completely disconnected from what matters to hard-working Scots in the real world”. The most controversial policy introduced since the 2021 election was Ms Sturgeon’s plan to allow transgender people to self-identify their legal gender, which was vetoed by the UK Government. Mr Findlay said this would have “trashed” women’s rights and allowed every male rapist and sex criminal to be legally classed as female.
He also cited the SNP’s declaration in official guidance issued to Scotland’s public bodies that there are 24 different genders. They included “gender fluid”, meaning how a person identifies regularly changes, and “genderqueer”, a term for those who believe they are something “other than male or female” or a “combination” of both. The guidance, issued by the Scottish Government’s chief statistician in October 2024, also said people may be “pangender”. Dr Suhail Anjum, 44, and the unnamed nurse were caught in a “compromising position” by a colleague who walked in on the pair at Tameside hospital. The consultant anaesthetist had asked another nursing colleague to monitor the male patient, who was under general anaesthetic, so he could go to the bathroom. Instead, Anjum, a married father of three, went to another operating theatre at the hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, where sexual activity took place with Nurse C on 16 September 2023.
A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing was told another nurse at the hospital described seeing Nurse C “with her trousers around her knee area with her underwear on display” and that Dr Anjum was “tying up the cord of his trousers”. Anjum was absent from the operating room for eight minutes and the patient came to no harm. The matter was reported to management and Anjum was dismissed in February 2024 following an internal investigation. Last week he told an MPTS disciplinary tribunal he wanted to resume his career in the UK and relocate with his family after they had since moved to his native Pakistan where he worked as a doctor. Anjum promised there would never be a repeat of a “one-off error of judgment”. Giving evidence, he said: “It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame. I let down everybody, not just my patient and myself but the trust and how it would look. “I let down my colleagues who gave me a lot of respect.”
On Monday, the tribunal determined that Anjum “had put his own interests before those of the patient and his colleagues” and the incident involving Nurse C “had the potential to distract Dr Anjum … and he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient’s care”. The tribunal chair, Rebecca Miller, said his actions, while they did not harm the patient’s safety, were “significant enough to amount to misconduct that was serious”. However, she was satisfied that Anjum was determined not to repeat his past misconduct and considered the risk of repetition to be “very low”. No sanction will be imposed on the doctor and the hearing will reconvene in Manchester on Tuesday to decide whether to issue a warning on Dr Anjum’s registration. Anjum had admitted engaging in sexual activity with Nurse C and that he knew she was “likely to be nearby” when he left his patient. He also admitted his actions had the potential to put his patient at risk.

A migrant who raped a teenager was previously jailed for a "sexually motivated attack" but not deported to "protect his right to a family life". Nigerian national Gift Oladele, 24, was found guilty last week of raping a 19‐year‐old woman in woodland near Wrexham last September.
North Wales Live subsequently revealed Oladele was jailed in December 2022 for two years for falsely imprisoning a woman in Manchester who feared she would be raped in broad daylight.
The Home Office ordered his deportation in 2023 but Oladele successfully appealed that order. This allowed him to go on to rape a north Wales teenager.
In the 2022 case Judge Conrad KC told him he had "inappropriate attitudes towards women with a sense of entitlement". He said: "There is ample material here for me to find that you are a dangerous offender. I regard you, having seen you give evidence, as a young man who is clever, devious and manipulative."

The families of the the three girls murdered in the Southport attack have said they are "aghast" a teenager who planned a "copycat" attack was not detained when he was sentenced last week.
The boy, now 17, became obsessed with Axel Rudakubana, who killed Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, in July 2024.
On 6 August last year, the boy, from the Kirkby area, Merseyside, called police to confess he was planning an attack and asked to be arrested.
The girls' families said they were "extremely alarmed" at the "parallels" between the two cases. The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary said it did not comment on individual cases. The Home Office was also approached.
The families added they would be writing to Sir Adrian Fulford, chair of the public inquiry into Rudakubana's crimes.

An employee of a sexual abuse charity has been sentenced after sharing confidential information about a child victim with a prisoner, who then used it to intimidate a fellow inmate.
Lauren Leese, 30, was employed at former Stoke-on-Trent charity Savana, which supported survivors of sexual violence and abuse, when she unlawfully obtained the sensitive information and shared it with Shane Davis, 36, who was in prison for rape.
Davis, who is currently serving a sentence at HMP Dovegate, then used the information to threaten and intimidate a fellow prisoner, Staffordshire Police said.
The pair pleaded guilty to unauthorised access of computer material at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday.

June is joined in her fight by another Fife mum, who is battling against her paedophile ex Adam Ng. He applied to the court for visitation to his three-year-old despite being convicted of accessing the highest category porn involving the abuse of young children. A 90-day public consultation will start next Monday to look into the draft legislation before being formalized into law, and activists are already up in arms. One advocacy group, TransLucent, has called it “yet another blatant act of discrimination against transgender youths’ healthcare”. This hyperbolic reaction is an indication of how the NHS came to take foolish, unevidenced decisions in the first place. A fear of upsetting activists has led to a widespread acceptance of the language of an unscientific ideology, while overlooking potential harm to patients. Terms such as “gender-affirming” are all over the NHS website, which hasn’t yet been updated to reflect the newly-announced pause in prescribing hormones to under-18s. It attaches outdated stereotypes to young people who “might feel their physical appearance does not match their gender identity”, a distinctly unclear term. What’s happened to the NHS, under pressure from trans activists, is indefensible. The idea that “gender dysphoria” represents a genuine mismatch between biological sex and “gender” has gone unchallenged for far too long. It’s not unusual for anxious teenagers to hate their bodies, and some may need sympathetic counseling to establish why that is. What they don’t need is to be told that the NHS has a duty to affirm their feelings — in this case, prescribing drugs that will give their bodies some characteristics of the other sex.

Hana Young didn’t choose to be a midwife for the money – she wanted a fulfilling career caring for mothers and babies. But she wasn’t prepared for the fact she’d live her life in debt thanks to an £80,000 student loan.
The 36-year-old midwife, who is based on the South Coast, currently has £85,830 worth of debt for her three-year midwifery degree at the University of Surrey, which she qualified from in 2020. In the past year, she paid back £642 but her loan increased by £2,500 in the same amount of time due to the high interest rate. “It’s a very bitter pill to swallow,” says Young, who believes she’ll never pay back the amount in full. She earns an annual salary of £31,000 per year, and is a single mother to two children with a mortgage. She is one of thousands of midwives in the UK paying back a student loan debt that will only be cleared 30 years after she graduated. On top of her student loan, she points out that she pays a yearly fee of £120 to be on the NMC register, and even has to pay to park at her hospital. “I feel like I’m just constantly paying out money for my job.”
The amounts owed by NHS workers, such as midwives, seems particularly unfair. In 2017, the bursary for student midwives in England – which provided free tuition and a living grant, and also covered health professions such as radiotherapy and nursing, was officially abolished. All midwives who graduated after then are on a standard student loan system and their debt is increasing by thousands each year. Salaries for midwives start at £28,000; senior roles such as managers or specialists earn £50,000–£65,000.
Student loan debt, along with other financial pressures, are adding to a worsening shortage of midwives in the UK. The Royal College of Midwives reported in 2024 that growing numbers of student midwives were leaving their courses before completion because they could not afford to continue. According to the BMJ, there was a record loss of 633 full-time midwives between April 2021 and April 2022. The think-tank Nuffield Trust has called for student loans to be written off for clinical staff in the NHS, with their calculations showing it would be a cost-neutral investment by retaining thousands of midwives and nurses.
Charlotte Woolsey, 39, qualified as a midwife in April last year, having decided to retrain after 18 years working for the police. Her student loan is £72,939 which she says is “really frustrating”. “It’s just going up and up and I’m not making a dent in it. The interest is always going to be more than the amount I’m paying back. It’s so stressful and limiting. It’s symbolic of the value that society places on midwives.” Woolsey, who is based in Kent, had her husband’s financial support while training but has heard of people who have lived in poverty to get their degree. “Some people are unable to feed themselves. It’s so hard to live while completing the degree because it’s really, really tough. You’re working full-time alongside study so you don’t have time to go and get a job for some extra money. You’re not getting paid for the work you’re doing in the hospital. “The problem is that this will become more of a middle-class occupation and it’s not fair.”
According to a report by the Royal College of Midwifery 87.5 per cent of midwifery students in England worry always or often about the amount of debt they’re in. Eight out of 10 have taken on extra debt to help ends meet and over three-quarters worry that they will drop out because of financial stress. Woolsey says wards can feel understaffed. “I have heard of occasions where a single midwife has been faced with caring for 14 women and 14 babies. That’s 28 people for just one midwife to keep safe on a postnatal ward. It’s not fair to the families being cared for or the midwives providing care to put that type of pressure on one person.”

Those who discovered the home found themselves uncomfortable with the master ensuite's transparency, given its glass walls. Photographs on the Rightmove listing made it clear that both the shower cubicle and WC were entirely exposed to the bedroom.
The advertisement for the terraced house, which looks entirely conventional from the street, appeared on Rightmove with a guide price of £425,000. Nevertheless, social media users seemed decidedly sceptical about having a "room with a loo", with one even noting it would trigger their "loo anxiety".
Sarah Weatherley, 50, explained: "I have been looking quite intensively on Rightmove recently because I'm looking to move to be with my partner. As my partner and I aren't particularly tied to one area, I've been comparing what you can get for the same money in various areas. Having discovered the listing, Sarah shared her findings on Twitter, writing: "Today on Rightmove: Impress/horrify guests with a glass-walled khazi." While another noted: "Had one of those in a hotel room in Berlin. Was weird even as the only occupant. Brr."

The creators of a 13m (43ft) tall sculpture of a giraffe, made from scrap metal, have appealed for a crane to enable them to finish it. The British Ironworks Centre in Shropshire, famous for its Knife Angel that continues to tour the UK, said it was its largest sculpture to date.
Once complete, it will be made from 10,000 pieces of unwanted auto parts, painted with orange and white giraffe markings.
It will also stand twice the height of the world's tallest living giraffe, 12-year-old Forest, who lives at Australia Zoo in Queensland and over 10m (32.8ft) taller than the UK's current tallest sculpture.

Three brothers from Sheffield have been convicted of historical child sexual abuse offences against five victims.
Kamran Ilyas, 38, and Kamar Ilyas, 39, were found guilty of a total of five sexual offences against one of the girls, who was 12 years old when Kamar first met her in 2004.
They were convicted on Monday, following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, and are due to be sentenced on 22 June.
Amar Ilyas, 41, was found guilty of 20 offences against five victims, including rape, but did not attend his trial in September 2025 and is believed to have travelled abroad.

A drug dealer who stamped a stranger to death after a car crash was released from prison on licence a year earlier, a murder trial has heard.
Leicester Crown Court was told Chukwuemeka Ahanonu was freed from a two-year sentence in July 2024, having been found with more than £1,000 in cash and a machete after going through a red light in September 2023.
Ahanonu, 23, is accused of murdering 56-year-old Nila Patel near Leicester Royal Infirmary in an attack caused by his use of cannabis on 24 June last year.
Ahanonu, originally from Peckham in south-east London, has admitted manslaughter but denies murder, claiming diminished responsibility.

Trans Café Bremen was a meeting group for trans-identified individuals that took place twice a month at KWEER, a bar and pub social space at the Rat & Tat Zentrum für queeres Leben in Bremen, an “action and advice center” for the LGBT community that was one of the first of its kind to be founded in Germany. While there was no explicit age requirement published for attending the café, some of the café’s followers on social media referenced referring “young people” to visit. Safety concerns involving the café first arose in October of last year, when the meetings were temporarily cancelled. At the time, the group announced on their Telegram channel that there had been a number of “awareness cases,” which in Germany can refer from anything from “discrimination” to sexual violence. The Trans Café did not specify what had occurred at that time, and instead simply mentioned the need for a “code of conduct” for both visitors and staff. The Trans Café proceeded to re-open at the start of December of last year, and was held on its regular schedule until February 23, when further meetings were abruptly cancelled once again. The staff not only admitted that they reacted “very slowly” and “inappropriately” in dealing with the incidents of sexual violence, but revealed that the space itself had “allowed perpetrators and their protectors to network.” There also appears to be significant overlap between those organizing the Trans Café, and the staff at KWEER itself. One Reddit user, u/brettimkopp, identified themselves as both “working behind the bar” at the Trans Cafe, and a “barkeeper from KWEER.”
