If you're running well enough on CPU, you'll run well enough on GPU with no batching whatsoever. Persona 5, for example, doesn't do any batching at all.
Doing a readback *right now* is doable, too, if you're not pushing for max performance, you can eat the GPU stalls, and the classic graphics APIs deal with all the synchronization for you.
For instance, my raytracing tutorial intentionally stalls the GPU *every single frame*, and it can easily surpass 3000 FPS. Not a typo.
