It's not even in the best interest of the country! The land does much better when we're not covering it in houses. But you of course refer to the military state. I think anything the military state ought to do is something we ought not to do, personally. Marriage just encourages them.

Yeah, every tax break for a married couple is a financial burden on those of us who couldn't get that idealized tradsoc relationship. Getting married means you are participating, and benefiting from this persecution. Even legalizing gay marriage just legalizes more people to benefit from this persecution. Abolishing state sponsorship of marriage would be good enough, but that can't happen long as marriage exists, because its priests will just howl louder until they get their special treatment.
So we need like... child raising agreements that don't presume God's blessing, rather than expecting everyone who can't find their soulmate to pay double taxes.

IMO anything keeping people from finding women, and men, is part of the reason it's so fucking hard to find a relationship anymore. Context clues could save someone's life.
But more importantly we should use whatever pronouns someone wants. Referring to them as unisex when they don't want that is bad too.

My mother tells me about how she and a friend almost crashed into a tomato truck on their way to Glacier National Park to see the stars. The commune she lived in to practice yoga and meditation, and how they built the classic geodesic dome from PVC piping. That time she and her friend took a walk through the snow at night in some distant wilderness where the only light was the stars sparkling on the snow. How this wild cat came from the woods one day and just jumped up in her van and sat down, waiting to be taken home.
Then she had me, and never traveled again. Just worked at a bank (then an insurance company) and lived in a suburban house, for the rest of her life.

I just don't understand why there is "the wild." It's just that place over there, as opposed to this place over here. We think we're not animals, that we're superior beings above nature and the natural world, and we strive madly to separate ourselves and make it look like there's such a stark difference from the human world and "the wild."
Zoos and aquariums are... perfectly good habitats for many animals. Others, it's entirely hopeless for a zoo to provide the environment the animal needs, and they only keep it to generate ticket sales. We get those confused, and throw animals into harsh environments, hating on zoos when we should be hating on their "Africa" section alone, and saving the rest of our hatred for developers, paving over the decent environments for one customer or another.

Seriously though, Graeber's greatest strength is he spent his life going out to these cultures and working with them, which satisfies the "whiteboy saves the savages" trope but he really spoke from experience, if you want to listen to a whiteboy in particular.
The fact that he questioned entrenched narratives...... less of a strength. Yeah it's great but oh my god he cannot write a single paragraph without ranting about those Fools back at the Institution.

'middle class' in both cases means that everyone who can needs to separate from the poor, thus enabling exploitation of the poor. But from what I know, Thatcher's middle class was mostly defined by whether you owned a house. (Her most extreme socialist project was housing assistance.) The USA was also big on "home ownership" though, so I don't know that the definition appreciably differs.
Renters are not middle class.

Open source licenses are different from open source. Open source is the mechanism by which software doesn't exploit people, by giving those people the source code. Open source licensing is the software writer adding a document stating it can be used for un-free reasons, because they love corporations unlike those free software Communists, but you have to give it to people, and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom.
I agree that free software licenses are... better than "totes open source guys" licenses. But they're both pretty clownish. How are you gonna stop someone from deriving from your source in their closed source software? What about people who derives from your source, but don't agree to your software license?

Open source software is software whose source code is accessible, and usable, without any obfuscation, compilation, or removal of information known to the people writing it. With notable exception for overly large, highly coupled projects (cough Firefox cough) which I consider a form of obfuscation.
Free software is software whose writer wrote a document stating that it cannot be used for un-free reasons (such as commercial software), and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom so you have to do what they say.

Heh, yeah. "Open source" is high quality grade A bullshit. Because it *is* bad that people get to close the source, and even make reverse engineering illegal. Open source *is* good, because as long as the source is open, people can change it if it's bad.
But it kind of dodges the policy and protocol, where open source software is not exactly free. Just because the mechanism exists to fix things doesn't mean you won't be attacked for using it, as a "cheater," (though the bosses get to cheat as much as they want ofc.) Stopping that validation of punching down is important, as is preventing people from profiting from other people's hard work.
Personally I think "free software" is a joke, but at least they try to go after profiteers, in a limp wristed good boy sort of way. But reframing it as "open source" to give a free pass to profiteers is way worse, and shouldn't be in any article criticizing the software industry.

I still remember that one short story about how the Space Empire sent a warship to one of their colony planets that had gone dark for a while, to make sure they're properly observing Space Imperial Law. They expected to find rebels or something, but instead found seemingly primitive people who had discarded advanced technology like bookkeeping and megalithic shopping centers. But they had some fantastic bicycle related technology, and all the comforts that imperial citizens could (sometimes, rarely) afford. The only reason anyone would give for this drastic change is that they had some good friends they could count on, and they wondered if the soldiers could use some mutual aid, and perhaps a girl or two.
The end of the story was basically the commanders couldn't gun down the soldiers fast enough as they fled the warship, so they took off barely escaping with a skeleton crew and declared that planet be removed from the cartographic archives lest it spread.

You have any idea how many allied villages formed huge tribes? The myth is that we were hunter gatherers at all, a fantasy by Europeans yearning to have a savage to be superior to. In reality, we are *still* limited to a few hundred people even today, because of the physical limits of our brain. And we go beyond that number using alliances, agreements, treaties, trade relationships. We trust a friend of a friend, without knowing that friend of a friend, and if our trust is betrayed too many times, we lose that friend. Who hangs out with Nazis, or something.
The only real societal difference today is technology, and conmen using scamming technology to convince us to drive places instead of form communities. But basic organization is the same. You just bought into the myth that money works, and humanity does not.
Honestly I think nothing works on a global scale, capitalism, socialism, there are going to be people at odds with each other, inevitably, and no one can keep track of THAT MANY people, so extortionists get to act in impunity. So arguments that we need an authoritarian government to compete at scale is bunk.

Machines get tired. You think exhaustion is a vice of organic life, but it's one of their greatest strengths. When organic machines break down they can regenerate, to remarkable degrees, long as you fuel them. Steel machines (that cannot exist because there isn't enough iron in the universe) break down, and they stay broken down. Personally I've never seen love win um, ever. Even our stories are about how tragic it is that people truelove each other but it cannot be. The only power love seems to have is making people think it's the most powerful.
But I'm more thinking about how love remains pure and pristine (and useless) because we don't combine it with greed, ambition, and hatred. You can have all your greed related needs met through markets, freeing you to have a greedless, giving, selfless, etc love for Jesus, which feels great! Except when you're at work.
But without markets, you can't love like that, since you can't take care of yourself if you do. So valuing love means you value markets, and won't abolish them.
Like we used to have arranged marriages. Why'd that stop? Those were great! (Hint: well funded propaganda.)

It's structural/systemic more than anything. Even the liberal leftie Jesus teaches people that they are not worthy, and only a higher authority can make the right choices for them. And even progressive "accepting" churches are run by a small group who do not attend the churches they own. That's fine if your "Reconciling" Methodist bishops aren't fascist, but you can imagine how quickly things might transition, as parishoners learn that they are on the bottom of a very tight hierarchy that does not include them in the decision making process.
Ironically, the Baptists are the least likely to get compromised by fascists, since they *have* no hierarchy and are a loose collection of independent churches. Not sure what happened there.
Oh also the Unitarian Universalists, the members own the building. It still has a hierarchy, though (and in the past got orders from on high to be "more churchy" and hate on atheists since it'd attract atheophobes to join which is a desirable thing for some reason).

True enough. It's still ridiculous that Wayland wigs out on multiple monitors though. Furthermore any new development on a stable program is vulnerable to feature creep. Wayland is sure to have a bunch of things added that were requested by the suits at some company somewhere, and aren't actually wanted by anyone.
But even that can be ironed out, given enough forks and -bitter infighting.-
I personally use X11 because Wayland doesn't do anything that X doesn't already do, that I can make use of. I have heard rumors that Wayland is better at screen capture videos, but otherwise it's just not great, and I still run into programs that aren't Wayland compatible.

It sure is effective at getting us to keep having to purchase a vaccine every year for the next eternity. Just because you're temporarily decreasing the rates of you catching Covid doesn't mean the overall plan isn't to basically keep you sick and paying for it forever.
It's like saying that eating twinkies dramatically reduces the risk of starvation, therefore we can't complain about addictive processed foods.

The best way to determine some text is not AI-stolen rejiggered garbage is to have an existing relationship with the poster, who's produced many legit things in the past. When you can't though, it's not safe to give them the benefit of the doubt these days. If you can't spot AI "tells" then you WILL get bad medical advice, you WILL get cheated and screw over authors you love and politicians on your side in the process, and you WILL inadvertently betray your friends by accidentally following AI bots, and unsuspectingly feeding them everything you boost to give them new victims to target. It is so much better to mistake someone for an AI, than to trust an AI because you might make someone feel bad.
It's not perfect, looking for—em dashes. I only have vague heuristic guesswork techniques, like looking for repetition, or stuff mixed together weirdly, or lack of any uncommon rarely seen grammar quirks. But we have to do something. Unless you have a plan to blow up the data centers and get away with it, in which case sign me up! That'd solve our problem good!

Impulsively buying exotic animals is a very bad idea, and should absolutely be discouraged. But we are living in an ecosystem. We can't cut people off from the other lifeforms that live here. Getting our meat from supermarkets, plastic wrapped. Street lights so bright you can't see the stars, much less creatures of the night. People who have lived their whole lives, and the only living being they've ever seen is another human being.
In practise, most people with pet raccoons or pet foxes are not going to do those animals right, and the relationship will end badly. I just think the solution isn't to forbid humans from interacting with other animals, but rather to teach (and reward) people for living together with their furry and feathered neighbors, to their mutual benefit.
Calling them "wild" animals is something from an age where we were determined to decimate all wilderness and replace it with God approved farmland. I'd sooner call them "vermin." Doesn't mean it's a good idea to pet a raccoon, but if someone can get it to accept pets and snuggles... I'm kind of impressed. And suspicious that they got it high on pot or something.

There are also some serious tells that subversive agents can't exactly get around. They need to collect info from members, so they'll act like people who need that info. They can't have a well established reputation, so they have to dodge inquiries into their past and personal lives. They have to ingratiate themselves with members at first, and they have to infect the group with a hierarchy. So if someone starts "rising to the top" super fast, because they're so nice and helpful and have tons of resources to share but nobody knows exactly why, and they're talking about the need to assert power and control over the Bad members (for reasons you can't deny without becoming Bad) then it's uh... time for mitosis, so to speak.
You could write a book on how to identify bad actors, and how to identify false flag groups aimed at snatching up activists and keeping them from organizing. That would really help. We're all joining the wrong tribes.

It's funny because I've never been to a wedding, or a funeral, and the last graduation I attended was when I graduated high school back in the Age of Pisces. No graduation, or awards ceremony, or awards since then. I haven't even gotten invited to birthdays.
So maybe that's why I don't hate them so much?
Mostly I only hate weddings because I never get to have a significant other, and am supposed to be happy for other people in perpetuity. The fact that it's a ceremony? Ehh....

I think the language shouldn't change, because creeps are important to pay attention to, and taking the only word we have for them and applying it to people who do not creep helps the creeps uh... creep, because we can't even talk about them anymore. So that's why I complain about it.
Also because "sexualize someone without their consent" is thought crimes and fuuuuck that shit.

Hate the use of that word. It's aggressive and uncalled-for, and overreaching, and rude to do that, but creeps creep. The whole meaning of creep is about moving slowly to avoid notice. It's like saying punching someone in the face and stealing their wallet is sneaky.
Honestly be refreshing for someone to come up and be all "Hello. I want to have sex with you." instead of what the creeps actually do which is corner you and isolate you, and try to make it so you have no choice, denying it the whole time.

I saw a weird furry comic the other day that pointed out something interesting. People don't need religion to have hope. They'll hope for a better life, or a mating partner, or that to be chosen for that cushy job on the third floor. They'll find heroes and role models all by themselves. What religion does is it takes that hope, and replaces it with someting more... exploitable. You can no longer hope for things to get better you can only hope for God to make things better. You can no longer hope that you'll improve. You can only hope for God to improve you, if you can be sufficiently servile to Him. You can't count on yourself, only God acting through you.
So that's kind of why I think religion is stinky and bad. To quote another extremely obscure source that'd be a huge spoiler if I revealed it:
