**I spent a year building a censorship-resistant community communications network. Here is what I built and why.**
My name is Kim Stock. I am 70 years old, a lifelong independent technologist, and I have spent the past year building something I want to share with this community.
It is called the Sovereign Stack.
**What it is**
A community-owned communications network built in two layers.
The physical layer combines Starlink satellite, HF shortwave radio using JS8Call, and LoRa mesh radio using Meshtastic — automatically routing messages to whatever channel is available when the internet goes dark. No human intervention required. It degrades gracefully and never goes silent.
The governance layer uses self-sovereign Nostr identity, a Signum blockchain-anchored reputation system, and a token economy that rewards honest community participation. Five pillars: Identity, Contribution, Validation, Reputation, and Incentives.
**What is actually built**
This is not a whitepaper project. Eight GitHub repositories are complete and published:
- sovereign-stack-blueprint — master design document and shared constants
- sovereign-stack-initiative — coordination, roadmap, SDK integration
- sovereign-stack-protocol — contribution flow, validation, rewards
- sovereign-stack-capabilities — capability registry, peer verification
- sovereign-stack-governance — reputation, staking, disputes, governance
- sovereign-stack-ai — local AI participant layer using llama.cpp
- sovereign-stack-sdk — unified SDK and CLI
- sovereign-stack-documents — all founding documents readable in browser
The governance layer is fully implemented in TypeScript using the Signum blockchain. The AI layer runs locally on modest hardware — llama.cpp with Llama 3.1 8B Q4, two threads, 512 token context, nice +15 priority so communications infrastructure always takes precedence.
The SST token has a complete design — no pre-mine, no founder allocation, 100 million maximum supply, earned only through real network contribution.
**Why self-hosted matters here**
The whole point is that no one owns this but the community running it. Every node is hardware you own, software you run, identity you hold. The founding node is a mini PC running Linux Mint, a Starlink Mini for primary connectivity, a LoRa mesh node for emergency communications, and a solar and LiFePO4 battery system so it draws nothing from the grid.
The Sovereign Switchboard — a Python daemon — monitors signal quality and battery state and routes communications automatically. When the internet goes down the node does not wait for a human. It moves to HF radio. When HF degrades it moves to LoRa mesh. Red Alert mode suspends the AI, dedicates every resource to the mesh, and broadcasts an emergency alert to all visible nodes.
**What I am looking for**
Honest feedback. People who have built similar things and can tell me what I got wrong. Developers who want to contribute. Ham radio operators who want to run a node. Anyone who has thought about what happens to their community when the infrastructure they depend on stops working.

Draft Concept: BURST v1 — On-Chain Service-for-Payment Primitive
I’ve been thinking about a minimal on-chain standard for deterministic service transactions on Signum.
The idea is very simple:
A provider publishes a capability on-chain.
A customer sends a fixed SIGNA payment with an encrypted job.
The provider returns the encrypted result on-chain.
No Lightning.
No external rails.
No negotiation.
Just native settlement.
Version 1 would be limited to a single reference service (text summarization) to keep scope tight.

Build systems that assume scarcity, not abundance. Energy, attention, trust, and coordination are always finite over long horizons. Designs that require constant surplus to function are borrowing from a future that may not be able to pay.

SIGNUM’s security, by contrast, is built around infeasibility of resource monopolization, not key discovery. That makes it a different class of “hostile problem,” but one that is just as resistant to shortcuts.
Here’s how SIGNUM aligns with — and diverges from — the LBC-style confidence model.
First, SIGNUM’s cryptography itself is not weaker.
SIGNUM also uses standard, well-understood cryptographic primitives (including hash-based constructions and established signing schemes). There is no “easy math” hiding in SIGNUM. Brute-forcing keys is just as infeasible there as in Bitcoin. From a pure cryptographic standpoint, SIGNUM easily passes the same baseline test: no realistic key search attack exists.
Second, SIGNUM deliberately shifts the battlefield away from raw compute.
Bitcoin says: “Bring all the GPUs you want; the keyspace will still crush you.”
SIGNUM says: “Bring all the compute you want; without sustained access to large amounts of storage, you don’t get power.”
This is an intentional design choice. Proof-of-Capacity (PoC+) makes the dominant scarce resource disk space and I/O, not FLOPs. That immediately kills entire classes of acceleration fantasies:
• GPUs don’t help much.
• ASIC advantage is limited.

Bitcoin’s security is validated by futile brute force at scale.

A Letter for the Future
If you are reading this, the world has likely changed again—technologies come and go, platforms rise and fall, and the way people communicate is always being reshaped by those who hold power. This letter exists to explain why decentralization mattered to me, and why I believed systems like SIGNUM were worth thinking about long before they were popular.
Most social networks in my time were built around control. They owned your identity, your words, your relationships, and even your history. You were allowed to participate only as long as it benefited someone else. Accounts could be erased, voices silenced, and value extracted—all without consent. People didn’t truly own their digital lives.
SIGNUM offered a different idea. It treated identity as something you own, not something granted to you. Your name, your messages, your relationships—these could be anchored to mathematics instead of companies. No one could take them away just because it was convenient or profitable.
The idea of using SIGNUM like a social network wasn’t about technology for its own sake. It was about human dignity. It was about letting people speak, connect, and create value without asking permission. It was about building systems that assume people should be trusted first, not monitored first.
In this model, messages could be permanent when they mattered and temporary when they didn’t. Communities could choose their own rules instead of inheriting someone else’s. Value could flow directly between people without ads, manipulation, or surveillance. Most importantly, no single entity could rewrite history.
