MAN CRITICAL AFTER ‘ATTEMPTED BEHEADING’ IN STREET IN BELFAST
North Belfast stabbing under investigation after man left seriously injured
The incident took place shortly after 10.30pm in the Kinnaird Avenue area. Police were called to reports of a violent assault and found a man with multiple stab wounds when they arrived.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
A second man was arrested at the scene and is currently in police custody. He is being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses. Officers have also urged the public not to share footage circulating on social media, saying it could interfere with inquiries and cause distress.
Local representatives described the attack as shocking and said it had unsettled residents in the area.
The motive for the attack has not yet been established. Police have not said there is any wider risk to the public.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.

Sister Sara was sitting by her convent window one evening as she opened a letter from home: Inside the letter was a $100 note from her parents.
Sister Sara smiled but as she continued to read the letter by what was left of the last glimmers of daylight coming through her window, she noticed a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against a lamp post in the street below.

I don't usually go to strip clubs, but last night I found myself in a peculiar situation at a buddies bachelor party. An 80-year-old man with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and schizophrenia was admitted to an inpatient psychiatry service for hallucinations and anxiety. On hospital day 2, he had sudden onset of confusion, bradycardia, and hypotension. He lost consciousness, and a “code blue” was called.
The inpatient psychiatry facility is adjacent to a major academic medical center. Thus, the “code team” (comprised of a senior medical resident, medical intern, anesthesia resident, anesthesia attending, and critical care nurse) within the main hospital was activated. The message blared through the overhead speaker system, “Code blue, fourth floor psychiatry. Code blue, fourth floor psychiatry.”
The senior resident and intern had never been to the psychiatry facility. “How do we get to psych?” the senior resident asked a few other residents in a panic. “I don’t know how to get there except to go outside and through the front door,” a colleague answered. So the senior resident and intern ran down numerous flights of stairs, outside the front of the hospital, down the block, into the psychiatry facility, and up four flights of stairs (the two buildings are actually connected on the fourth floor).
Upon arrival minutes later, they found the patient apneic and pulseless. The nurses on the inpatient psychiatry ward had placed an oxygen mask on the patient, but the patient was not receiving ventilatory support or chest compressions. The resident and intern began basic life support (CPR with chest compressions) with the bag-valve-mask.
When the critical care nurse and the rest of the code team arrived, they attempted to hook the patient up to their portable monitor. Unfortunately, the leads on the monitor were incompatible with the stickers on the patient, which were from the psychiatry floor (the stickers were more than 10 years old). The team did not have appropriate leads to connect the monitor and sent a nurse back to the main hospital to obtain compatible stickers.
In the meantime, the patient remained pulseless with an uncertain rhythm. Moreover, despite ventilation with the bag-valve-mask, the patient’s saturations remained less than 80%. After minutes of trying to determine the cause, it was discovered that the mask had been attached to the oxygen nozzle on the wall, but the oxygen had not initially been turned on by the nursing staff. The oxygen was turned on, the patient’s saturations started to rise, and the anesthesiologist prepared to intubate the patient. Chest compressions continued.
At this point, a staff nurse on the psychiatry floor came into the room, recognized the patient, and shouted, “Stop! Stop! He’s a no code!” Confusion ensued—some team members stopped while others continued the resuscitation.
Although a review of the chart showed no documentation of a “Do Not Resuscitate” order, the resuscitation continued. The intern on the team called the patient’s son, who confirmed the patient’s desire to not be resuscitated. The efforts were stopped, and the patient died moments later.

I. The Real Forgotten Man
The premise of Amity Shlaes’ book The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, is that FDR perverted the concept of the “forgotten man” as William Graham Sumner conceived of him in his 1883 essay, The Forgotten Man. As quoted above, Sumner said that “C” is the forgotten man when “A” and “B” decide to help some poor and downtrodden “x” by forcing “C” to pay for the solution to “x”’s problem. Shlaes argues this perversion let government interventions burden the productive class (C) to ‘help’ the downtrodden (x), repeating Sumner’s warning.
He works, he votes, generally he prays—but he always pays.
Earlier in the essay, Sumner said of “x”: “He works, he votes, generally he prays—but he always pays.“ Or as I like to say, “The American taxpayer is the dumbest person on the planet: he’ll pay for anything.”
II. Lowball Wages
I was recently contacted by an American recruiter–and by American I mean someone who claimed to live in the United States, work for an American company and–dare I say it?–had a profile picture of a White man. This recruiter said that Walmart was hiring an Automated Tester with a bunch of skills I have listed on my job board profile. This particular recruiter made it sound like Walmart was looking for someone senior or even perhaps at a Lead level, but wanted to pay junior rates.
This immediately frustrated me because I know that my skillset is worth more than what was being offered. I desperately wanted to reply back “I know Walmart is one $5 mistake from declaring bankruptcy–hence the low rate–but I don’t work for broke companies.” Instead, I collected my thoughts and counted with a wage that was $15/hr higher than his opening salvo; some might call this “negotiation”.
The recruiter replied that he could only go up another $5/hr.
W-2 Contracting
The real frustration here wasn’t jut the low number, it’s what the low number represented: high pressure deadlines under what I call W-2 contracting. For those not familiar with the term, W-2 contracting is where you get a higher than normal rate, but you belong to a staffing company and don’t get PTO and usually have to pay for all or a significant portion of standard benefits (e.g. health/dental/vision insurance)
The idea is that the worker gets paid more and the end client gets a worker they can terminate at will without having to worry about a lawsuit or paying unemployment upon separation.
But if the rate isn’t high enough, it doesn’t really cover the worker’s costs. And when a below-market rate is offered, “well, Hoss, that’s just insulting”–to say nothing of the constant pressure of unrealistic deadlines the worker will be under in order to keep the job.
But there is one hidden benefit: if a worker takes the job because they need the work but are stuck underwater because the rate isn’t paying the bills, the worker will then be abused by his so-called friends for being dumb enough to take the lowball rate. And if the worker doesn’t take the bait, then he's called stupid because he isn’t grinding away giving up his health and well being to work a highly stressful job while he “searches for a better job”.
The only way to win is to not play.
III. China’s Sweet and Sour Venezuela Crude Deal
Prior to the arrest of Maduro by the United States, China was buying heavy crude oil from Venezuela at discount of $10-$20 per barrel. Because energy sits at the bottom of every economic pyramid, China could manufacture cheaper because their cost of production was cheaper because they were getting oil at an artificially lowered price.
If were were to frame this in Sumner’s formula:
A = policymakers/corporate leaders pushing globalization/free trade/offshoring.
B = allies like consumers enjoying low prices or politicians touting growth.
X = the “global poor” meaning Chinese laborers and the Venezuelan economy (benefiting from discounted oil sales to survive sanctions or provide the West–namely the United States–cheap labor).
IV. The Forgotten Man
Who is the real Forgotten Man, the C in this equation?
C = the American worker—the forgotten one who pays through wage suppression, job displacement, and community erosion, all to enable the “help” for X via cheap exports (Venezuela) and cheap imports (China).
When companies claim they ‘can’t find Americans willing to work,’ ask: at what price? And who’s really footing the hidden bill?
The Forgotten Man deserves to be remembered.

Less than 24 hours after 37-year-old Renee Good was shot dead by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, two U.S. Border Patrol officers approached a van parked in Portland, Oregon. The agents ordered the two occupants out of the vehicle. They refused. The foreign nationals then allegedly tried to run down the officers, who shot and wounded the pair. They are now in federal custody and expected to survive.
Reaction was swift and predictable. The Border Patrol guys were condemned by Oregon officials almost across the board. This despite the fact that the migrants are members of the violent Tren de Aragua gang out of Venezuela and were involved in a shooting last July.

In fact, the Border Patrol asked for help from the Portland Police Bureau in finding the alleged criminals.
That request was refused.
Portland, where I anchored the news for a time, is perhaps the most radical left city in the country and is in open rebellion against the federal government over immigration law. Mayor Keith Wilson issued this initial statement: “We stand united as elected officials in saying that we cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a training ground for militarized agents …”
Think about how subversive the Mayor’s statement really is. He would rather have violent foreign criminals roam his city than help the feds track them down.
Even after the gang members were exposed, Portland Police Chief Bob Day told reporters he is reluctant to give out information because it would be “victim blaming.”
Victim blaming? The two migrants will be charged with gun crimes, among others, and they are “victims?”
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a dumber sentence from a member of law enforcement in my life.
But Chief Day, Mayor Wilson, and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek couldn't care less about public safety. They selfishly pander to the far left. They are in absolute rebellion against the federal government.
Same thing in Minnesota, where Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey actually taunt the Trump administration for enforcing immigration law. These two men incite people like Renee Good to physically confront armed agents. Minnesota is another state in rebellion.
We have seen this twice before in our history. In 1859, the South was in open rebellion against Washington over slavery and other things. States like South Carolina were “nullifying” federal laws. The incompetent President James Buchanan did nothing, as federal facilities were attacked by “demonstrators.”
The result was the Civil War. More than a million dead, all told.
Then, in the late 1960s, millions of American citizens rebelled against the Vietnam War. Violence broke out. National Guardsmen killed four protesters at Kent State University.
The “Sanctuary” movement is a defiance of established law. President Trump was elected largely on gaining control of illegal immigration. He is trying to do that, but leftist resistance has created a very dangerous landscape.
Two things have to happen going forward. Federal agents must try to de-escalate confrontational situations when they can. Violence against protesters will tear the country apart. Arrest lawbreakers later.
And the Justice Department should file lawsuits against states like Minnesota and Oregon, which are in open rebellion against the federal government. Hold irresponsible governors and mayors accountable in a court of law. Shame them.
All Americans who love their country have to be saddened that it has come to this. But things will get worse unless the subversives are held accountable.

Attorney Robert Barnes speculated that Trump wants to protect US Shipping lanes; ergo, wanting the United States to purchase Greenland, taking control of the Panama Canal and remarks about making Canada the 51st State.
Trump is not the first to see Greenland’s value. Eighty years ago, a Danish diplomat made a move that changed its fate.
The film The Good Traitor tells the story of the Danish ambassador to America, Henrik Kauffmann, and his actions when the Nazis invaded his country.
The Good Traitor was my introduction to Kauffmann; there are scant English-language resources available on Kauffmann, namely, Defiant Diplomacy: Henrik Kauffmann, Denmark, and the United States in World War II and the Cold War, 1939-1958.
When the Nazis invaded Denmark on April 9th, 1940, Kauffmann had a problem: the Danish government had cooperated with the Nazis; therefore, any instructions Copenhagen gave Kauffmann were really instructions coming from the Nazis. If Kauffmann didn’t obey the puppet government, he would be guilty of treason because a government cooperating with the Nazis was, in political reality, still a functioning, geopolitical government.
Kauffmann needed another option.
Denmark Cooperates, Not Capitulates
So on April 10th, 1940–the day after the Nazis invaded Denmark–Kauffmann “declare[d] that we couldn’t receive and act on orders from an occupied Danish government¹”. Ever the diplomat, Kauffmann concocted a middle ground out of thin air: Kauffmann proclaimed himself as acting in the name of the Danish King, Christian X representing a free and independent Denmark.
To understand the significance of this proclamation, we have to understand both the position Kauffmann was in post Nazi invasion of Denmark and how Denmark conducted itself during the Second World War.
Denmark did not capitulate to the Nazis. Nor did they collaborate. Instead, Denmark cooperated under protest. In other words, Denmark did not resist the Nazis, but neither did they aid the Nazis. This is in contrast to Norway which fiercely fought the Nazis for two months only to be heavily oppressed and subdued by the Nazis when they could no longer resist.
In exchange for not actively resisting the Nazis, the Danish government was allowed to remain intact and run its affairs with Nazi oversight vs becoming a total puppet state. There was enough autonomy and agency given to the Danish government that later in the War, Denmark would refuse to execute ethnic cleansing orders without major repercussions.
Ambassador of a Free and Independent Denmark
After Denmark agreed to cooperate with the Nazis, Kauffmann was recalled to Denmark because he no longer represented what then existed of the Danish government. Kauffmann didn’t want to go back to Denmark: he wanted to stay in the United States, resist the Nazis and serve the ideological Denmark he was de facto representing prior to the Nazi invasion of his homeland.
“free and independent Denmark” was not a real country: it was a political fiction. But it was a useful fiction because in April of 1940, the United States was still officially a neutral country–the keyword being “officially”.
The attitude of Americans was slowly shifting in favor of war, though nonintervention was still the dominant public opinion; Lend-Lease, one of the first acts of American intervention in the growing European conflict, was one day shy of being a month old when Kauffmann made his proclamation.
Kauffmann desperately needed the United States to officially recognize him as the ambassador of a free and independent Denmark so he would have diplomatic cover.
The good news for Kauffmann was that the Americans saw no reason to expel Kauffmann from the United States, so he was in no immediate danger of being sent to occupied Denmark. The bad news was that the United States couldn’t officially recognize Kauffmann as ambassador of the free and independent Denmark because doing so risked the wrath of the Germans, wrath that would pull the United States into a war in which it did not wish to become a belligerent.
The Relevance of Greenland
Greenland was a colony whose ownership had been in dispute since the early nineteenth century. Norway and Denmark both laid claim to the island.
Greenland was originally settled, in part, by the Norwegians. Much later, Norway and Denmark had the same king. As time continued, the two nations wound up separately sovereign. Norway argued that the island should belong to them because Denmark never occupied the island. The dispute was finally settled in 1933 by the Permanent Court of International Justice. The Court ruled in Denmark’s favor making Greenland Denmark’s colony.
Greenland had its own government comprised of a Northern and Southern Governor, Eske Brun and Aksel Svane, respectively. Because Greenland was a colony, Brun and Svane acted more as managers, especially in diplomatic matters. In other words, Greenland was not sovereign and could not form legally binding agreements with other nations; Greenland was subordinate to Denmark in this regard. But Brun and Svane could express their observations of the Greenlandic population.
And this is where Kauffmann’s diplomatic genius shone: asserting that he alone represented a free and independent Denmark in the name of King Christian X, he unilaterally offered the United States the right to establish military bases in Greenland.
While both sides wanted the deal, there were questions of law and political timing, but ultimately, the deal was solidified a year after the German invasion of Denmark².
The agreement ensured Germany could not establish bases or weather stations in Greenland and provided the United States with an immense North Atlantic buffer against a Europe engulfed in war for over a year. Most crucially, it turned the island into a strategic halfway point, dramatically shortening air and sea routes to the European theater without requiring departures from the North American mainland.
Allowing Danish Ships to be Seized by the United States
One concurrent incident that helped Kauffmann’s cause was his diplomacy regarding Danish ships. One of the consequences of Germany controlling Denmark was that Danish merchant ships now became German merchant ships. Consequently, Kauffmann was instructed to protest U.S. seizure of these ships.
Protesting U.S. seizure of Danish-cum-German ships, of course, would have been counter-productive from Kauffmann’s point of view. Instead, he actively encouraged the ships’ captains to let the ships be seized. It took persuading because such seizures would have meant a financial loss³, but the alternative would be sailing under a swastika. Kauffmann thus ingratiated himself to the United States.
Paying for Everything
Back then, like now, everything costs something.
Kauffmann had some money of his own,but sustaining a diplomatic operation on behalf of a free Denmark required far more. With the real Danish government under Nazi occupation and funding cut off, Kauffmann needed a reliable way to pay salaries, cover operations, and support the handful of Danish diplomats abroad who followed his lead in rejecting Copenhagen’s orders.
It turns out that as a precautionary measure, in 1939 and early 1940, Denmark had sent its gold reserves to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in several shipments for safekeeping, depriving the Nazis of this gold.
The United States, by recognizing Kauffmann as the legitimate representative of Denmark acting in the name of King Christian X, allowed Kauffmann to sell Denmark’s gold bullion on the open market as needed. The funds were then used to support the diplomatic operations of the free and independent Denmark around the globe.
Greenland, Then and Now
Greenland’s strategic value hasn’t faded with time.
In 1941, it served as a vast North Atlantic buffer—shielding North America from European threats while providing a vital midway launchpad for Allied forces heading east. Greenland’s role remains largely unchanged today, especially if we discount ICBMs⁴.
Does Greenland need to become the 51st State, a U.S. territory or colony to serve this purpose?
No. The current defense arrangements already give the United States significant access and influence. However, full ownership would allow the United States to act more unilaterally.
Trump’s bold, often provocative calls to acquire Greenland echo the Nixonian “madman” playbook of projecting unpredictability to force better terms. By constantly claiming a desire to buy Greenland, it allows the Trump administration to make a concession that concedes…nothing.
Denmark and Greenland benefited the United States–and hence the world–once before. They have the opportunity to do so again. A strong, secure United States means peace and prosperity around the globe so long as America sticks to her principles of individual liberty and limited government.

After the war, Kauffmann lobbied for the Danish ship owners to be properly compensated for their losses during the way. It was a protracted political battle requiring even more diplomacy, but the compensation was ultimately paid.

We can discount inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) because despite regional proxy conflicts, at the time of this writing, no country has launched an ICBM at the continental United States. Doing so would be a deliberate act of war. If there is any difference between Greenland in 1941 and 2026, it is that Greenland would be providing more of an emotional buffer vs a physical buffer because of the reality of modern weapons of war. But ICBMs–though the need not be nuclear–do fall under the same mutually assured destruction (MAD) as nuclear and thermonuclear weapons.

So, what happened and why was General Cosgrave in the center of this diplomatic faux pa? There were to be two copies of the Instruments of Surrender: a copy for the Americans and a copy for the Japanese. Interestingly, both copies were printed in English. Whether or not this was done to humiliate the Japanese by having to accept a document not in their own language remains unclear. What is clear was that the Americans didn’t want any ambiguities due to translation, so they wrote the Articles of Surrender in English so there would be no misunderstanding1. Parchment was found for both copies in a monastery and the documents were prepared by General McArthur’s staff. The Americans put their copy in a leather folder with gold tooling and embossed seals2 whereas the Japanese copy was put into a canvas with irregular stitching and no seals or embellishments. Again, this was not to insult the Japanese, it was more due to a lack of resources in a war zone on short notice. Both copies had the same eight paragraph text on the verso and signatures on the recto. The Japanese signatures were on the top of the recto and the Allied signatures were underneath. There was a line where each signatory was to sign with their title underneath the line. When it came time to sign the documents, the Japanese signatories, Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu, signed first. When it was each man’s turn to sign, they signed both the Allied and Japanese copies of the Articles of Surrender as did each of the Allied signatories. The Allies signed in printed order from top to bottom with General Douglas MacArthur signing first. As with the Japanese signatories, both documents were signed by each signatory when it was their turn to sign. MacArthur was followed by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz for the United States, General Hsu Yung-chang for China, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser for the United Kingdom, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko for the Soviet Union, General Sir Thomas Blamey for Australia, Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave for Canada, Général de Corps d’Armée Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque for France, Lieutenant Admiral Conrad Helfrich for the Netherlands and finally Air Vice-Marshal Leonard M. Isitt for New Zealand. Cosgrave’s Error When General Cosgrave signed the Japanese copy of the Articles of Surrender, he skipped his line and signed on the line below where he was supposed to sign. Hauteclocque, Helfrich and Isitt signed below Cosgrave’s signature. The error was pointed out to General Richard K. Sutherland, MacArthur’s Chief of Staff. See, this was a legal document. A very important legal document. If it wasn’t filled out correctly, it may not have the force of law behind it. The Japanese3 could have claimed that World War II, therefore, did not properly end. The Japanese could have fought on, though this likely would not have occurred given they were severely resource constrained. In order to rectify the situation, Sutherland crossed out the printed titles and hand wrote them under the representatives’ signatures. The Japanese were still not happy with measure, so Sutherland initialed each of his changes. At this point, the Japanese accepted their copy of the document and World War II officially ended. 1 Have you ever heard of the aphorism, “The sun never set on the British Empire”? Well, one of the consequences of the truth in that aphorism is that the English language was spread around the globe. As a consequence of that, it turns out that English in 1945 made for a reasonable choice for diplomatic language. In fact, Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu was fluent in English and was the only defendant during the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (held the following year in 1946) to answer and participate in English! It’s amazing to me to think that the British Empire covered more ground than did the Roman Empire. How can such a tiny island nation have colonized so much? 2 Seals like, in a generic sense, the Presidential seal. 3 Well, really, either side, but the Japanese were more likely to protest since they were the ones surrendering.
