i added the "-y" option which means it will not require you to enter anything else
also you don't need to wait a long while, 5 mins should be more than enough

boot up your computer normally
when you reach the login screen, hit CTRL+ALT+F2 (so use F2 instead of F1, first TTY is used to log kernel messages so its harder to read)
then login if required, and run "sudo dpkg -l cinnamon", the "-l" is a lowercase "L" not "1"
this command may ask for your password, if so enter it
