There is something beautiful about being able to play SEGA Dreamcast games (many of them anyway) in 480p on a VGA monitor.
It was so ahead of its time. Dead or Alive 2 still looks amazing even though it's 26 years old!

no idea, just warmed it up for a while running the unreal demo (1 hour). Turned it off and on again and has been fine so far, so fingers crossed it carries on in this fashion!

I hope I can fix this excellent Viewsonic G90FB 19" CRT VGA monitor.
At the moment the image is blurry, but when I went to adjust using the front panel controls, none of the buttons work currently.

The Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad 1.0 released in 1996 designed for Windows 95 gaming (not DOS).
Most PCs of this era only had one gameport for controller devices, so it features a pass through port to connect additional players.
It's surprisingly comfortable considering its age too.
This is mine all cleaned up and ready for action.

Simon the Sorcerer remains my favourite point and click adventure game of all time.
Released in 1993, it's just beautiful visually, memorable music and funny wit.
My first experience was on the floppy version for the Acorn Archimedes and then the PC CD-ROM talkie version. @npub1k7x…ceaf is a fantastic way to experience this now. Going to play again with a Roland MT-32 now I own one.
So many great memories.

25 years ago today, the nVidia GeForce 256 DDR released. The world's first GPU (DDR version).
Up until this point, I was pretty obsessed with the 3Dfx range of cards and then all of a sudden this card came along and changed everything.
The integration of the transform and lighting hardware into the GPU itself set the GeForce 256 apart from older 3D accelerators that instead relied on the CPU.

A 3dfx Voodoo 2 has arrived this morning, and on installing drivers on my Windows 98 machine, I just get a purple line appear and then freezes as Windows desktop appears.
Going to hope it's a driver issue, will test with the Tomb Raider demo in DOS tomorrow. Wish me luck, hopefully it's not a faulty card 🤦

My very first PC CPU, the Intel 486 DX2 66Mhz.
So many fond memories of the chip. Playing Simon the Sorcerer talkie version on CD-ROM, Doom Shareware, DOS & Windows 3.1 and a whole new world of "multimedia".

I purchased mine second-hand and it was covered with a rather distressed stuck on cover. After removal, the beauty within.

Great day catching up with @npub17w6…cz85 and @npub1sdd…5sxj at Crash Live 2024.
They were showing an early preview of their new game for the Spectrum Next called Urb-X Warriors, that has a Kickstarter coming soon and also then plans for it to be available on the Amiga, Dreamcast and Mega Drive!

Just ordered my free Mister Pi frosted Acrylic Shell as I was part of batch 1.
The Mister Pi itself has been a fantastic introduction to FPGA and the vast retro gaming devices it supports, so good to have another case, hence the expression "just in case" 🫠

The analog stick on my recently purchased Nintendo 64 controller wasn't quite sensitive enough and sometimes sticking with movement.
I thought I would open it up to see what the problem might be. Well it soon became obvious, it was NASTY! Gunk of some description must have got in there at some point.
Now all cleaned and working great thank goodness.

My recent addition is the MT32-Pi. Basically you can use a Raspberry Pi with this clever hat connected to the Mister SNAC port to achieve Roland MT-32 MIDI module support and it sounds wondrous. Of course I started with the iconic intro of Monkey Island!

There is certainly beauty in raw retro pixels, but one of the advantages of the Mister Pi FPGA is I'm able to play via both HDMI to a digital monitor & via analog (VGA to SCART) to my RGB CRT TV.
CRT TVs certainly still have their place, it is far more flattering especially to the first generation of 3D consoles like the PS1, N64 and Saturn. On even older titles, everything has less resolution and yet more detail due to how the artwork has been carefully crafted.

Received my Mister Pi this week, a much cheaper alternative to the Terasic DE10-Nano and so far everything is running great!
The number of retro consoles & computers emulated in hardware is astonishing and with the addition of VGA so I can plug with an adapter SCART into my RGB 60Hz CRT is icing on the cake.
The computer cores in particular can take some setting up, but it's worth the effort.

Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars Reforged is a beautiful 4K resolution remaster of the original release from 1996 by Revolution Software Ltd.
The detail difference is staggeringly good and I will love playing one of the best point and click adventure games ever released in this new high fidelity modern interpretation.

Taking apart a 12 year old PC with an Intel Core i3 CPU. It's actually pretty impressive for its age and handled Windows 11 surprisingly well.
Once I took the CPU out though, certainly needed to replace the thermal paste!
Weird seeing a CPU without all the pins, although less likely to break something! The underside is nice and shiny with rows of teeny tiny capacitors.
Still life in this aging computer thanks to a new SSD, upgraded RAM and nVidia 1030 GPU.

Purchased on a sale a Logitech mouse, the G203.
On arrival, I plugged it in (yes I actually prefer a wired mouse!) and the RGB beautifully lit up and then it struck me...
Am I being silly, or is this very close to being the Commodore logo?

I was given a Dell Optiplex 3010 slim originally released around 12 years ago I believe.
I replaced the mechanical hard drive with a 256GB SSD, doubled the RAM to 8GB and now it's flying even with an Intel core i3 CPU. Dual boots Windows 10 and Ubuntu 24.04 now too.
Why? It's more reliable at burning discs than my external USB drive versions (SEGA Mega CD I'm looking at you!). Will also hook up an external floppy disk drive.

I see talk about people from X moving to Threads or Bluesky and that somehow #Mastodon is falling behind.
There is a honeymoon period on Threads & Bluesky as their desire now is to get users & engagement. At some point their aggressive push for ads & your data will begin.
Mastodon is ad free and even if it serves a much smaller community, the brilliance is the concept. The tech and ease of use will hopefully catch up in time and its future depends as much on the community we build together.

It's been quite a process, but after cleaning up the mess left behind by one of the capacitors that leaked its guts everywhere and replacing all of the main ones, it's now up and running again.
Of course I went straight to launch title Halo Combat Evolved for testing purposes!
Getting the solder out of the holes after removing the capacitors ranged from easy to difficult. Thankfully I had help, although I can see why people invest in a desoldering station!

Another retro computing success story thankfully!
The Commodore 64c I purchased, cleaned and fixed (bad internal fuse and power supply) is working great, although the tape deck lid was cracked in half!
A little super glue and it's now back in place and the tape deck working well also. Time for some Batman I think...

My Commodore 64c is working great, however the cassette unit struggled to read any of my original tapes.

There are many ways to load C64 games, but for £20 the TapeCart SD was one of the cheapest.
It inserts into the Cassette port at the back of your C64 and with a Micro SD card loaded with .PRG files, you load a browser and away you go. It loads everything super quick so plenty of games to explore.

My expectations were VERY low that a Commodore 64c I purchased on ebay for "spares and repairs" would work.
It came filthy, with dead creatures inside & outside not to mention rust. After taking it apart and cleaning, it was already looking fantastic, but would it actually turn on!
It was obvious the internal fuse had gone, so replaced this and joy of joys it showed the beautiful blue C64 screen and then proceeded to load a cartridge game too!

The Amstrad CPC464 is over 40 years old and one of the components that breaks easily is the tape counter reset button.
However, thanks to the world of 3D printing (and a willing volunteer who was kind enough to print it!), my problem is solved.
The original button was black, and yet this blue gives me the CPC464 feels regardless. Very happy.

So pleased to have found a true Acorn Archimedes A3010 mouse again.
Do have an A3000 mouse which is a different design, but the middle mouse button didn't work. Have you tried organising anything in RISC OS 3 without a middle mouse button? It's not happening true me 😭
