Yup.
European friends often say, quite correctly "We have racist people in Europe too. Quite a few actually!" and that is true. Individually, there's not much difference. 🤷🏿‍♂️
But systemically? The US has racist systems at such a scale and level of horror, that they have no equal in Europe, or anywhere on earth. Civil asset forfeiture is one of those systems. $68 billion stolen between 2000 and 2019. Most victims are poor and Black.

I'm talking specifically about police in the US pulling Black people over and having the legal right to take their money without a criminal charge. Not other forms of asset forfeiture that existed before that, even in the United States, as part of RICO.

Civil asset forfeiture in particular has been going on since Biden started it. Let me be super clear:
There was no such thing as civil asset forfeiture before Biden invented it. Then he invented it, and passed legislation making this theft by cop possible. Now we have it, and it's terrible.
But yes, it's been going on for decades. Because Biden is old as dirt. And he's been passing legislation like this, that's genocidally harmful for Black people for most of his political career.

Big props to Jeremy Saulnier who wrote and directed Rebel Ridge. Recommend.
The film covers so much of what is wrong with US policing, in an action packed drama movie. It also covers the evil and racism in the system vs the individual. I don't think a cop calls a Black person the N-Word once in the whole movie.

Which is why we see a few things:
1) Black people that work to reduce racism in the real world in the US, really dislike this movie.
2) Nazis that do the US racism, feel that this movie helps them recruit.
3) White people that don't know how to reduce racism, remain convinced that this movie reduces racism. Because they don't listen to the Black people in "1," and remain absolutely convinced that they know best how to reduce racism.

To agree or disagree with my take, you would need to say something about the depiction of Black people in the movie. Like either:
A) I think the depictions of Black people in the movie were fine
Or
B) I understand why a lot of Black people, especially those that have lived in Southern California and experienced LA racism first hand 🙋🏿‍♂️, had a huge problem with the movie.

Fascinating: my critique is 100% around the portrayal of Black people in the movie. I didn't even mention the portrayal of Edward Norton or any other white character, other than to say that his motivations were relatable given the false and disparaging depiction of Black folk in the movie. My take centered Black folk.
But you read it as how relatable Edward Norton's character should be, and if he should be relatable, or clownish or a monsters. Your take centered him.

The reality is that the portrayals of Black people in that movie were trash.
The total number of times in US history that a Black student has shown up to a school with a gun and shot a white student, are astronomically low. That's not a thing that happens. It's a thing that racist 2A gun nuts pretend happens.
The portrayal of Black people as violent, stupid, or hapless, is a big problem.
I hated that movie, and was not surprised that it recruited more nazis.

American History X is a terrible film if its objective is to speak against racism. If I were a young white man and I watched American History X, and I believed its portrayals of Black folk? I'd feel more justified in my racism.
Black people murdered his dad, a hard working fireman. Then tried to steal his stuff. Then murdered his brother in school. But we're not supposed to be racist because it's wrong. We're not supposed to be strong in a cruel world. That messaging doesn't work.

Black Panther also touches on the conflict by referencing a real historical event where Nigerian slaves observed how their slave ship was being sailed, and launched an ambitious plan to kill their slavers, and sail the ship back to Africa. They were able to kill their captors and take the ship, but couldn't figure out how to sail it. Rather than face recapture and enslavement, they chose mass suicide by jumping into the ocean tied down by weights.

Even before the arrival of the British, many African tribes, including those in present day Nigeria had a strong focus on education. The only difference, was the type of education.
1) Middle Eastern, traditional education. Math, Science, Agriculture,
2) Tribal education, oral traditions passed down from ancestors
3) Borg like acquisition of all knowledge through contact and trade with others.
One of the earliest slaves in the US was Omar Ibn Said, a Fulani scholar.

The Igbo and Yoruba groups embraced colonialism as much as the Nigerian spirit can allow. That means they basically said, "These Europeans whupped us pretty good with that scientific method thing of theirs! There's a science behind everything. Britain colonized, as they do, and created Nigeria combining ~300 minor tribes, ~30 bigger tribes, and ~3 main tribes. The biggest are: Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa/Fulani.
The North of Nigeria touches the Sahara. The South is close to the equator. Think of Nigeria as transitioning between 2 climate zones: The North, which is like California/Arizona weather, and the South, which is Florida / Georgia weather.
Much of Nigeria's oil deposits are under Igbo + Delta land.

I rarely drink at work events or conferences, *because* I'm in a position of privilege and influence, and so people shadow me. They drink as much as I drink.

I serve on the code of conduct committee for several of the tech conferences that I attend. If you get drunk and try to treat a tech conference like Tinder, then I'm one of the people that will throw you out.
There are whole entire apps for hooking up. Don't be messy.

I rarely drink at conferences. I rarely drink at work events.
I can have a drink or two and still have fun. But some conference attendees don't know how to act, and don't keep their hands to themselves when they get drunk. This makes conferences more risky to attend for women.
