Last Notes npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Yours, of course, is a bagde. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills The local games shop here has a sign on the door telling anyone wanting to buy Pokémon packets that they'll open the packet at the till before selling it to you, to try to prevent people from selling them on at a big markup. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Boop? :stux_boop: npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills ... but he didn't inhale. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Depends on how recently you've oiled your chain, I guess... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills :nyancat_body::nyancat_face: npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills This is the thinking that leads to the eldritch horrors of ORM frameworks. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills And you never, ever, saw one of those boxes without both keys still in the lock... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I've been writing an OS (just for the hell of it), and now I'm worrying about the fact that it's written in Rust, just in case. I don't think I could write a Rust compiler, but I could probably write a really bad C compiler. (In fact, doesn't rust rely on LLVM, which is highlighted in your images? Fuck.) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills TTHHAANNKKYYOOUUFFOORRTTHHEEPPAATTCCHHEESS!!IICCAANNRREEPPOORRTTNNOOVVIISSIIBBLLEESSIIDDEEEEFFFFEECCTTSS!!!! npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills What a great name. Must be fun explaining that one to the vet. :) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Then I confess to making a false accusation of treason against myself. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Is that payable to my next clone? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I can strongly recommend using mosh for dealing with shells over dodgy connections. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Congratulations! Hope the neighbours are nicer. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I don't see anything wrong in the btrfs side there. I don't have any experience of Nix[OS], so I can't comment on that. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Having noisy neighbours is an absolutely horrible experience. You have all my sympathy, and I hope you find somewhere quiet to move to soon. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Always have... Pass me that packet of breakfast cereal, would you? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Do I need to report my clutter to the Department of Unfortunate Death? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills The existence of this message has been redacted for security reasons. Loved Sailfish on the original Jolla phone, and on the Gemini. But I just got a Pixel with Graphene on it, so I'm not really in need of a new phone as early as next year. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I like the first two (waiting, and head-tilt) better than the two action shots. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I think I slightly prefer the one with the background, but either is good. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Even finding the line in the source would have taken me a longer time... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Blimey, that was quick. :) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Nice. :) One small typo: where -> were npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills One my Dad taught me: "Combien sont ces six saucissons-ci?" "Si ces six saucissons-ci sont six sous, ces six saucissons-ci sont trop chère!" #TongueTwisterFood #HashTagGames npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills On a domestic or office computer, I think it must have been the version of Breakout that came on the starter tape with the Spectrum. I'd probably played cabinets before that point, though. (Space Invaders was probably old hat by that point, but I remember Defender, Zaxxon, and Tempest in the local swimming pool.) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Le Corbeesier. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills "I'm having an old friend for dinner" npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I bought a dining table online. After the fourth or fifth "leave a review" email, I mailed their support people to tell them to stop. They did (on the second try). The first thing that happened after they closed the support ticket? "Tell us how we did!" I... wasn't all that happy about that. And I let them know it. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I think it was Peter Murray-Rust who described PDFs as "the finest method of destroying information known to mankind". npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Delete it anyway. It's just playing at being a document. :) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills * delete PDF * rotate original copy (optional) * re-export document as something sensible npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills "My log... saw something. Off the starboard quarter." npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Small comforts: we're still in a state where authoritarian policies *can* backfire spectacularly like this. It'd be a lot worse if the pushback had to be minimal and/or entirely underground. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Presumably he only wants to change sides when the door on the Walkman is closed. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Oh, one does one's best... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Oh, that'd be *everyone*, not just the US gov. (Except the librarians). npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Do you gently pat the glass of water over the edge, or knock it over when the vase falls on it after you roll on your back to stretch? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills You play a cat, with a table full of interesting objects to knock off it... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Make Lovecraft, not Warcraft. https://topatoco.com/products/og-craft npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills You know what went wrong _last time_, at least. :blobcatwink: Seriously, good luck with the move. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I'm sure they are, but it's slow enough that the top manglement aren't going to make the connection. Or, if they have made the connection, they reckon they can last out long enough to screw another few billion out of the process before moving on to something else just as pointless with another set of suckers to fleece. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Question for anyone out there on fedi with experience: My mum has increasingly bad ataxia: very wobbly hands and feet. She's got to the point of barely being able to write legibly. Using a mouse is also getting difficult, but she can still use a keyboard at this point. Are there assistive technologies or techniques that she might be able to use on her Ubuntu machine that would reduce or eliminate the need to use a mouse? #Ataxia #Accessibility #Ubuntu #Linux npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills That look on his face, though... "Oh God, it's Thursday, isn't it?" npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Holy crap. That's impressive. Reminds me of the 1000 tonne bridge that I saw being shuffled into place in one piece a few Christmases ago. Just... bigger. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills No assistants, only accomplices. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills The deeds of my house specifically say I'm not allowed to run a tannery or do any mining. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I don't know if it's the state of the world, or the state of my head, but it took me until about word 9 of that headline to realise that it was referring to money, not people. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I can't tell who the director is here. Not enough lens flare for a J. J. Meowbrams film. Possibly Stanley Mewbrick? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills When I exercise with weights, my spreadsheet tells me I shift about a tonne... but that's a few kilos lots of times over 20 minutes, not the whole thing all at once... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Meep! npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills "Which idiot wrote this?" [...] "Oh, Past Me. That bastard." npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Crowd-source it? Post the script, ask people to record themselves saying it. I'm not sure I could manage an American accent, but it could be amusing having the bad guys with extremely stupid accents. (Or I could do you a good English Bond villain...) npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills "Your browser is not officially supported"... "Sign in here"... #include <octopus-nope.gif> Ho hum. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I'm having enough trouble as an NPC in Capitalism. Wouldn't recommend the game. Too hard. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I once knew someone who was 6'6" (2m) tall. He drove an original Issigonis-style mini. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I'm running *those specific services* as IPv6 only, so I don't have to bugger around with NAT on the firewall. Most machines here are dual-stack, but I tend to configure and run things on v6 first. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Huzzah for IPv6 only! I have some services at home (mostly managing video recordings) that I can access from outside. It took me a while to realise that while I can access them from (e.g.) rental properties, I can't usually access them from hotels. This is because most hotel chains are still IPv4-only, but a lot of small room/cottage rentals are using recent consumer equipment, and about half of them support IPv6. (My home is native IPv6 enabled, because of @npub1sv0…rq9x ). npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills In her retirement, my mum has been learning to play the cello, having played it when she was at school. She went to the Oxfam music shop at the weekend to get a book of studies, to practice with. She found one, opened it up, and... saw her name written inside the cover, in her own handwriting from 60-odd years ago. #music #cello #coincidence npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills That was a couple of miles away from me! It's a big development in the town centre -- the building wasn't in use at that point, and I think the fire was caused by an accident while putting roofing materials on. As far as I know, nobody was hurt and there was no serious damage to the building. #rdguk npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Pet peeve: that's not a crest, it's a coat of arms. The crest is the part above the mantling, which is above and behind the helm, which is above the escutcheon, and is never used independently of the rest. So here, the crest is the red diamond, hand and spear at the top. The mantling is the fancy feathery stuff. The helm is the helmet, and the escutcheon is the shield. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills are absolutely brilliant. Not the cheapest, but amazingly reliable, and you can always get through to someone who knows what they're doing at tech support immediately. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Facebook. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Remember, it's not just devs -- it includes mo-cap actors, voice artists, musicians, 3D and 2D artists, and scriptwriters, too. The big expensive headline games are much more like blockbuster films in their production than indie game development. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Weird hair, bad suit, one eye... must be Scaroth of the Jagaroth. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills One rainy November 5th, I was out with an umbrella, and could hear the spent smuts landing on the brolly... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I'm sure it is. I've seen the egress charges. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Oops. We had to do something similar a couple of years ago to transfer (not as much) data from someone's on-prem into Azure, and they have a service called "DataBox", where they ship some hardware with a bunch of connectivity ports on it to a location and you plug it in however you can, copy the data across, and then ship it back. I think they can export data the same way (at a price), but I have no idea if the same service is available for O365. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills We have your six-digit sort code, and will release it unharmed if you pay the ransom. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills For what it's worth, I started using mosh last month on a long (2 days) rail trip. I use mosh and tmux together, and it's been amazingly reliable, even with the "terminal" machine going to sleep overnight -- it just wakes up in the morning, reconnects, and everything's still there. At this point, I'd say that mosh is reliable enough that you don't need to use tmux for reliability, but I like tmux for the way it handles multiple shells over a single connection. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills The problem is that nobody at MS (or any other big company) will care if the comments are entirely negative. The only thing they care about is if there's enough suckers paying for it. My company just enabled Copilot in GitHub, at the cost of $21 a seat (only slightly less than the cost of the rest of the service). People do want it, and are paying for it, as amazing as it seems to you or I. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Where do I apply to get a job like this? :blobcatsleep: npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills One for the #WorldBollardAssociation ? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Paging @npub1x59…gect ... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills There have been patents issued for some utterly ridiculous things, over the years. Obviousness, prior art, Simply Not Allowed (algorithms)... but they still get through. I'm kind of glad that the algorithm patent that was submitted with my name on it got refused for prior art. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills I've looked at these before. There seems to be only two different products on the market, both looking very similar (but different in the details of the hinges, I think). They get sold under a variety of different brands, but otherwise are probably the same two designs made in the same factory. I think I could only find them on AliBaba and Amazon, and I don't really fancy buying from either of those. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Quote from C-suite at work: "We're moving towards a more Microsoft-native approach." Apple isn't looking so bad to me right now. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills You should have charged 99¢ for it. Then you only look to them like a cheap-ass spammer. Much less dangerous than some free software idealist. Cynical? Moi? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills You're not a billion-dollar corporation. Of course they're going to complain. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills USB-enabled recliner chair? Not going to guess whether it's just for charging, or if it has some kind of app to control it, in case you can't leave the phone alone for long enough to reach for one of the buttons... npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills The rabbits moved out months ago. It's just a hole now. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Is that the name of your next band? npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills How do you define "weird", here? From my memory of, briefly, working in a neuroscience department, there's a fairly standard format that's used in MRI scans. (And IIRC, fMRI delivers a sequence of them, one for each point in the time series). npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills "How do I do this?" "This way." "But that's icky." "Yes, but that's the way you do it on the web." npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills There's something someone once said to me, which has stuck in my mind for a long while: "You've got too much taste to be a web developer." npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills What if someone attacks you with a pointed stick? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piWCBOsJr-w npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Everyone's been clutching their pearls about Islamic courts when they should have been worrying about the Capitalist courts. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills There's no reason that a send stream can't be replayed on a non-btrfs filesystem (with suitable support), but the implementation in btrfs-progs is definitely btrfs-specific. The stream format is called "FAR", and there's a far-tools (or, possibly far-progs) library in github somewhere that gives an FS-agnostic view on the stream that you could use to implement a receiver for a different FS if you wanted. npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills It's... complicated. Simply, yes, it does. In detail... the send stream is a sequence of (mostly) userspace operations: "create a file", "create a directory", "write this data to a file", "move this thing to there". Almost all of those operations are simply POSIX operations -- will work on any filesystem. However, some -- a very few -- are btrfs specific. These are: "snapshot a subvolume" (used by incremental send), "reflink an extent", and "set the received UUID". npub1a88jr7e6ertw4nqq4q49kt7fveuymjp94gtws8wn5pnufg2wvrsqldcqy2 Hugo Mills Such derp.
