Very interesting perspective, thanks for sharing. Hard to find Bitcoiners who aren’t cheering for #NumberGoUp and a strategic reserve. Personally I find it odd how the narrative has shifted from years ago when Bitcoiners cheered for freedom currency that routs around the government and now they are happy the government is getting more involved in taking direct control over Bitcoin.

I thought that most of the mempool is clogged up with low-fee ordinals/inscriptions/BRC-20 token degen gambling speculators. That’s crowding people who actually want to use the network out of a low fee environment into a high fee environment. If OCEAN enforces a filter against that, the number of their low fee transactions sitting in the mempool will increase. Some might get frustrated and just stop, but those that remain will have to pay a higher fee for the non-Ocean pool to take their transaction. The higher fee environment may further erode speculation. StratumV2 isn’t going to help them unless they up their fees. Unless I’m wrong.

I believe that holding your own keys is not that expensive. Forgetting an offline hardware signing device, you could just use an app on your phone, if you don’t have a phone roll some dice to generate your seed words that you store on paper. BUT, if you’re talking about affording the fees to transact on layer-1, then there may be people that can’t afford the fees (especially with Ordinal inscription speculation filling up the mempool). These people may be more in favor of asking their “bank” to hold their bitcoin, which provides them a layer 2 channel for cheaper transactions. The upside is that Banks won’t be able to fractional reserve re-hypothecate as they do now.

A few day ago I broadcast the first Stable Channel onto the bitcoin mainnet.
Stable Channels lets users get stable USD or leveraged BTC price exposure using Lightning. Peer-to-peer, 100% bitcoin.
This is finance, streaming. Let's look inside.
We have two types of users in a Stable Channel:
1 - Stable Receivers want stable USD. To peg their BTC at, say, $100.
2 - Stable Providers want to leverage their BTC.
Short vs. long. We connect them over Lightning and settle frequently, so they both get what they want.
Both sides put in $100 (of bitcoin) into a dual-funded channel.
Last week this was 0.002648 BTC, or 0.005296 BTC total.
The transaction took less than one hour to settle on the bitcoin blockchain.
Each side contributed $2.15 for transaction fees.
Every 5 minutes there's a Lightning settlement. Both nodes query 5 BTC/USD price feeds and take the median.
BTC price ⬇️? More BTC required for $100 stability. Stable Provider pays Stable Receiver.
BTC price ⬆️? Less BTC for $100. Stable Receiver pays Stable Provider.
Since confirmation, there have been 763 settlement events, 288 per day.
If the Stable Receiver's BTC is not within 0.01% of the agreed-upon USD value ($100), a payment is made.
611 payments were made for a total of $43.90 and an average of payment of $0.07.
Zero fees.
Each counterparty keeps track of their numbers and whether they are paid on time. No oracle signatures are required.
If they are not paid on time, their counterparty's risk score goes up.
Each side remains self-custodial, and can leave at any time. This has trade-offs.
The BTC price has been stable recently.
The stable USD side now has 0.00002545 more BTC. The long side lost BTC.
Despite little volatility, ~$44 dollars went back and forth.
Lots of payments? No problem with Lightning. Lessen counterparty risk with rapid settlement.
What are the benefits of Stable Channels?
Self-custodial, simple, no fiat, no banks, no tokens, no shitcoins, no Treasury bonds, less oracle risk. Better for financial privacy, decentralized, tax advantages.
And of course: only bitcoin and bitcoin infrastructure.
Okay, and the challenges?
Same problems as Lightning: need to run a node, hot private keys, maybe high fees, always online. + your counterparty can leave anytime.
If we can prevent catastrophic failure, can we manage marginal counterparty risk with great software? TBD.
What can you do with Stable Channels?
Stable USD, long BTC. Better trading experience, quick-to-market structured products.
Be kept stable at the 7-day, 52-week, 200-week BTC moving average, lessening user volatility.
Plug in funding rates and yield. Plug in payments!

Ordinals is a novel invention that was able to capitalize on get-rich-quick gamblers from the “web 3.0 / NFT / crypto” crowd.

Since Apple forced the removal of the zap button on a note, if I see I note I like I currently go to the profile page of the OP and click the zap button, but that doesn’t necessarily attach the zap to the note so the content creator sees why they are getting zapped.
Is there a hidden keyboard shortcut or something that allows me to reply to a note with a zap?

There are some issues with Damus, however. I clicked the “post” button 3 times trying to make my last post because it wasn’t posting right away. Instead it posted 3 times!
The note was a little long so perhaps that was the problem, or perhaps the relays I use were busy, or maybe my wifi signal was weak. But can’t Damus compensate for those things with a timeout on re-clicking the “post” button?

Apple just updated the Twitter app on my phone so it’s no longer called Twitter but X, and changed the logo so the bird is gone.
I’m reflecting on a journey that has been several years coming. I was addicted to Facebook years ago, but when they forced me to download a messenger app separate from the main app to chat (apart from WhatsApp that I already had) and realized the surveillance system they were creating I walked away and basically quit their platform.
I found a new home in some online forums using Tapatalk to feed my social media addiction. I paid for a lifetime subscription to the app, but then the dev came out with Tapatalk 2.0 (basically the same app w/ more features) and the TOS changed and they wanted me to pay again. By this point however the communities had grown so toxic that as my interests changed I couldn’t even continue on the forums and walked away again.
For a little while it felt freeing to be off everything, but then I got hooked in with Reddit. I had always dabbled in Reddit but I was never a daily user. And then I was. Until the owner decided to change an API so that my preferred app could access Reddit. Again I was disappointed and heard the voices saying Reddit wasn’t what it used to be, saw the writing on the wall, and felt like it was time to move on.
But on to what? Well, I had been co-dependent on Twitter during this time but now I was putting 100% of my time on social media towards Twitter. With Elon came changes: some good, but also some I didn’t like. I’m afraid of and against an all-in-one app like WeChat or Facebook + messenger + LibraPay. I know Apple and Google are interwoven into society in so many ways but I find myself turning more towards sovereignty, FOSS, and Bitcoin.
So, I think it’s time to walk away from Twitter/C and embrace NOSTR fully. It suits my values. So I’m sad, but also happy today!

I saw a post about cash vs charge (which could be applied to CBDC)
A man pays $100 cash for a mechanic to fix his car. The mechanic uses the $100 bill to pay a painter to paint his fence. The painter uses the $100 to his dentist for a cleaning. The dentist uses the $100 bill pay a handyman to fix his broken window. At the end of the week the $100 has passed through 10 people’s hands and is now $100 in the grocery’s register.
But if everyone charged $100 to pay for services the credit card company would take 3% every time. After 10 transactions they would have $30 just from the $100 moving around society. That $30 is stolen from the $100.

The only people I know who take privacy seriously are those that have negatively experienced loss of privacy. The same goes for security. The folks with the best locks on their houses have been robbed. My friends that own guns have been in situations where they were attacked and wished they could have better defended themselves.
