AI is a 0.01 quality JPEG.
It ingests a staggering amount of data to produce a relatively tiny file that you can decompress with a lot of guesswork on the computer's side.
The result is, usually, mostly ok on a larger scale but when you try to look at individual pixels, they're the correct color only by pure luck.

What ingests large quantities of data, applies some math and outputs a much smaller set of data that can still be used to reconstruct what was ingested? Compression algorithms, right?
And some of them compress *so much* that data can only be extracted partially and the rest needs to be "guessed" - like JPEGs.
LLMs ingest TB after TB and compress that into a few miserable GB.
And that's why the info they produce is like a JPEG with a compression factor of 1000 and more.

This goshawk (?) was completely frozen in place - she had just killed what seems to be a crow, and the other crow on the fence was making a call i never ever heard (kinda like a cat looking at a bird, iykwim) and there were a couple other crows circling around.

A couple weeks ago I finally picked up the courage to pause my perpetual Pratchett re-read and read The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin.
After the first few chapters I had to go back to Discworld because it felt unbearable.
And then I came back and something magical happened, and the apparently endless desperation ended instead and midway through I can confirm it's a great book even for sensitive cowards like myself.

I'm still unemployed, and I'm starting to think that I'm not going to find a job with #Django (in Berlin or remote).
After 25yrs as a dev I'm really pretty good - actually I'm good enough that I'm a better tailwind developer after three days' than people who've been using it for a year or more. And that's with me being a backender by trade.

I've been using Mint (Cinnamon) exclusively for the last four years or so, and I'm generally completely happy and satisfied and I don't miss Windows at all.
Except for one thing: Windows terminal.
And actually just one part of Windows terminal: being able to give different names to tabs.
I don't want to use a different terminal with AI bullshit or anything, I just want to have different names in tabs.

One of my kids is very much into minerals (for unknown reasons since I'm a rockhound and 7yos routinely hate what dad likes, right? Right?) so we started a "grow your own alum crystal" science project.

For the record, I'm still unemployed - there are a couple things that seem promising but still no offer so they're nothing.

thanks to @npub146r…mjkc and @npub1akg…8c0s 's feedback, I made a couple changes:
1) extended the English dict by a lot (now includes "mithridatises", as you were certainly about to request)
and, most importantly,
2) added a "Daily" mode, which is a shorter Challenge with identical starting seed for everybody, and made it the default.
Let's see if this works =)

Yesterday my wife and children were accosted by a shady-looking guy, while sitting at Berlin Central Station McDonald's.

I've been asking my sister to let me know how my father's surgery went as soon as she knows, because my travel plans depend on that - if he survives the surgery I'll leave ASAP, if he doesn't I'll have to wait for the funeral.
AND SHE DOESN'T FUCKING UNDERSTAND and keeps on repeating we don't know, there may be post-op complications etc etc.
BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT I FUCKING ASKED FOR, is it?
It's so so so so fucking hard.

In a way, the fact that my 90yo father needds an emergency surgery now that I'm unemployed is more convenient, since I don't have to take days off work to go to Italy.

not exactly: I'm more thinking about how the whole LLM fanfare is _forced_ onto the public, and nobody who consumes something produced by LLMs prefers it to the alternative.
And yet, it doesn't seem like this is covered all that frequently in media (at least not in my bubble), while it's always framed as "we're doing this for the customer" - which is patently false, as far as I can tell.

I realized that I'm perfectly fine with (and often appreciative of) other people's self-promotion - I even make purchases, when the time is right.
So, I guess my revulsion towards *my own* self-promotion isn't, like, a healthy thing but, rather, just another example of my general maladjustment.
