I kinda already do in the form of a 24/7/365 radicle seed https://repoducible.org which contributes in its small way to a distributed git repo system that is not open to censorship. However I vet the contents of every repo I seed to make sure it has nothing illegal because the repo is stored on my machine and as I see it I would be in trouble hosting bad things (as in really illegal stuff, not code).

Well I have my repo on #codeberg pushed from each branch; and identically (in a raid 1 cron job type arrangement LOL) to #rnsgit

#Codeberg has no ability to nor interest in hosting "as much code as possible", and no-one can force them to. Ok. They also have no interest in keeping users who know their code is a good fit to their principles, but who have to leave because they cannot make codeberg part of their infrastructure if they fear a codeberger moderator or bit "does not like the amount code the repo self-labels as e.g. claude code assisted" and deletes it as threatened.

we are democratising FOSS, exploiting the free and paid tools to:
- learn how to do things in a very short time
- document and explain tools of the trade
- become independent and make our own stuff
- securing our infrastructure using low-effort warnings
- enjoy making for oneself, or be it à la Heath Robinson
Nothing comes close in positive effects of a properly used tool. Lazy, damaging usage is a human foible, not a fault of the landlord or tool vendor.

Big question. My ThinkPad x230 with 8 GB RAM goes OOM during flake check if the flake compiles Rust. I'd say 16 GB is the practical minimum, mainly because my Supermicro X11 with 10 threads and 96 GB RAM reaches 15 GB during the same flake check. So I use a Hetzner remote builder for laptops. Nothing is fast enough for flake builds: they often become single-threaded, so even a 5 GHz CPU is not much faster than a T480s at 3 GHz. (First flake build takes 40 mins.)

Super. I use one fixed linux computer for reticulum over internet to have one ID. The ID is however encoded in my flake so I could use the same one on a different machine if the first one is off. It does lead to chaos if every reticulum messaging app creates its own ID and one is experimenting with different apps. I too have settled on meshchatx . What is relay chat?

Thanks. Yes, it should ALL be upstream derivations but the hate campaign against AI generated PRs is so bad I do not do it & make it all local. The flake uses 'parts' so you can pull in just the part/s you want: very handy so you do not need the whole flake & can test before maybe importing/harvesting the nix code The readme is not up to date, sorry. As you can see from the number of commits, even with Claude Code doing the heavy lifting, it is a very long term project to make my #flake.

Train in DE again 110 km for 3 people #Bayernticket works out at 74 euros *(3/5) = 44.50 € . My car incl all costs fuel etc. costs 0.40 € per km = 44 € . Again. Every single train ride in DE (not using the special discount cards and monthly / annual tickets) costs identically the same as using a car. This is very strange and cannot be a coincidence and suggests the pricing of #diebahn is not based on their costs but politically motivated decisions.

I also have experienced, even on TCP backbone set as gateway, the failure of replies to my messages to get through. Not sure if this is the problem you are referring to. So I message someone using my backbone gateway and they reply but it does not get delivered to me. (I have set up reticulum.me and reticulorum.net as backbone gateways BTW)

Meshtastic and meshcore are excellent for assessing the radio aspects in your area: what can be heard and how the terrain etc. works for or against you, how many others are "in the game". reticulum can be used in addition afterwards when you know that the bottleneck is not the lora radio connection or line of sight issues, and allows more options provided others are on board too (the hard bit) but with a seamless internet connection option too. All fun.

Using a repo like codeberg and #git for managing a #flake for #nixos that applies for all multiple machines of a fleet each, having their own git branch, using the .#<machine_of_fleet> is really hard. Does anyone do this too? Why is it so hard? For example I have not stopped using #checkout as a command because it makes no sense to me and leads to confusion, and use switch and restore. Also I have made a mental note not to refer to "main" in any operation other than the one master machine. Tips?

VPNs do not work because lots of sites and even my own home-served web resources are not accessible when on them e.g. proton, expressVPN . What is the definitive solution to this problem? I just wanted to say that github is the reference location for code (which is a shame but still fact), and that I am using #radicle as a robust meshed git repo system & #codeberg so no sheep. As mirror repo codeberg/github are ok locations just to get it out & get bootstrapped. To only get the #RNS code over #rngit reticulum itself seem not beginner-friendly.

Neat. Brave to use nixos live .... just kidding. I do not myself code in Python because the absence of brackets makes it a non-language for me. I do not want a PhD in VIM nano vscode or any other editor just to make a copy and paste work. I want it to works whatever the layout. I once sat down to start learning python and copied some code from elsewhere into the file... needless to say... absolute no-go... spaces all wrong. Since then, RUST or AIs seem to be able to cope though.

I am trying to update my #nixos flake and discover that #x11 is not supported by the latest #gnome but I also know that some of my hardware (#HPelitedesk800 , VM machines running xrdp and x11spice) fails to show correct windows under #wayland so this is very un-linuxy and I feel like a sort of macos hardware obsolescence vibe ... Or is gnome now just "bloatware" and #Xfce the new way forward here for the good old tech?

Hat off to you. In some societies there is a compulsory component of health insurance that insurers for long term care costs and therefore there is indeed a huge care economy. E.g..my son at 18 starts paying compulsory care insurance all his life. Insurance was invented in the UK to rescue families from destitution and all governments seem to prefer complex state admin procedures to funded rights. The UK needs its government to do its homework.

Yes but they are judging whether the Bundespolizei are allowed to wave through nearly all traffic. There is no victim. There is no crime. There is nothing what so ever that a court can object to. The need for some sort of imminent danger is not for the court to judge. The public should be able to sue the state for NOT controlling borders in case of illegal border crossings. The whole thing is completely loony and just exposes the absurdity.

I am going with zfs and sending snapshots from the main (mirrored) SSD to a raidZ2 array of HDDs and copy to a set of disks in a further set of disks in https://amzn.eu/d/0h2aDga2 as ext4 SATA as grab and run and 6 month, 4 month, 2 month, 1 month and 2 week air gaped ZFS backups.

I am no expert but by gut instinct says that difference is well below the random error margin one would expect when taking account of antenna position and how that sensitively influences signal to noise...but then again.. maybe you are testing very strictly.

If you find a an Andrioid smartphone (e.g. a lost one or a person who needs help and cannot speak) and the user has saved their emergency contact info in the phone, you can just press on "emergency" on the lock screen and find the stored emergency number immediately.

The way the post was written mixes two things. First the protection of nature and what the scientific & legal principles are that make a certain behaviour questionable. The other is your feelings about people who own something you would rather they did not. If the code of the app is not able to be inspected, how can one use it happily? I never use third party tools from outside the #nixOS package repo unless I can inspect the code....so I am perplexed 🤔. Am I the only one that thinks like this? Have I missed something?

True. It is impossible to manage. It is a sort of vestigial rule that is not enforceable. Let's face it: the quantity of code vastly exceeds any patent scope in existence & so the idea that coders managing repos in their spare time will roll out lawyers at their cost to sue someone running a binary that may or may not itself be in black box terms your code but underneath God knows what MIT-licence type LLM output is hard to see. Alas gnu licence is now mega hard to enforce.

Great explanation. A patent is more appropriate than copyright (which as the link says does not work when LLM has done the job) because then re-coding in other forms is not going to change the infringement. If the code's technical purpose is patented then the owners of the patent can prevent those who seek to use it in a non-permissive manner from bringing it to market and let those who follow the copyleft philosophy use it for free. Of course patenting each step is too expensive.

Yes but updates do sneak in .....I think. This can be.monitored via alerts from Github. Strangely I had more problems when the #reticulum stack was being updated because making things backward compatible and compatible with all #meshchat versions was not really achieved if even possible... so now, with the "maintenance mode", so long as you can indeed flash your radios (plural, use two to at least be able to talk to yourself 😂) everyone will be on the same "page".

Turns out if you want to change the setting as to how much you hear of your own voice when in a phone call, the menu in android is only present when actually in a call & then of course the phone app is what you see not the hearing aid app. The problem was solved in 2 mins by chatgpt's advice. I am faced daily with software from French sources and the usability is monstrous. Hideous. The comparison is so stark that it is a cultural difference. But this is a country that builds its own nuclear weapons and subs. The poster said that the French state was against encryption and privacy online and my point was that this might be due to IT retardation not a concerted or orchestrated move.

Die Entscheidung wie man rumgeht ist privat Sache. Und wenn jemand mit seinem Porsche Cayenne stat Tram fahren will ist dies ein Baustein einer Demokratie. Mein Ansatz ist das die die dafür entstanden kosten bezahlen sollen. Aber das ist sehr schwierig zu arrangieren.

Und ich wünsche mir, dass mit technischen Mitteln auch der Straßenverkehr nach den tatsächlichen Kosten abgerechnet wird. Die französischen Autobahnen sind dafür ein gutes Beispiel. Politisch ist das derzeit wohl völlig untragbar – aber eigentlich sollte es so sein. Ich glaube, dass die absolute wirtschaftliche Realität das Fundament der demokratischen Gesellschaft ist. Dass Preise künstlich gesenkt werden, weil eine genaue Abrechnung pro Kilometer technisch oder organisatorisch nicht möglich ist, führt letztlich zu versteckten Subventionen – gewissermaßen aus einer „schwarzen Kasse“ des Staates.
Ich wünsche mir, dass man bei Wahlen nicht nur Personen oder Parteien wählt, sondern auch gezielt über bestimmte staatliche Ausgaben entscheiden kann. 2/n

Die Kosten des ÖPNV in München sind eine absolute Unverschämtheit. 4,20 € für eine einfache Fahrt von mehr als vier Haltestellen – das ist teilweise sogar teurer pro Kilometer als Fliegen. Die Argumentation, dass das in Ordnung sei, weil man die Kosten mit dem Deutschlandticket senken kann, ist ein klarer Fehlschluss. Grundsätzlich sollte nichts weniger kosten, als es tatsächlich verursacht: auch nicht im Straßenverkehr. 1/n

Es sollte im Grundgesetz festgelegt sein, dass nichts Öffentliches unter dem Selbstkostenpreis verkauft werden darf. Diejenigen, die Subventionen wirklich brauchen, sollten diese stattdessen gezielt erhalten.
