Last Notes npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I'm absolutely sure that some Open Source developers are ego inflated jackasses, but I know quite a few who are not. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I'm struggling to understand why AI is so popular in the software development community. Especially with Open Source Software developers. These very developers were creating wonderful, beautiful things before AI. I would call what they created, well, art. Who cares if they're pumping their projects out quicker? Who cares if we get a new Linux kernel every couple of months? Release a new kernel every year. And I say this for every Open Source project. Take your time, do it right, create your art. We can wait. You would certainly gain a hell of a lot more respect from the folks who use your software. I have a couple of Open Source projects that I support monetarily and each one has stated that they will never use AI in their project. If the project's stance changes, then my support will change. I know that many developers won't give a shit about what I or anyone else says, and that's sad. After 30+ years of using Linux, I'm moving on. How many others are out there that feel the same way that I do? This is not the Linux and Open Source world that I want or the world that I have enjoyed daily for the past 30 years. I've been on my soapbox for a few days now about how disappointed I've become. I've been on my soapbox because this is something that I care deeply about. #NoAI npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I am going to attempt to install NetBSD on a Lenovo T14 or, maybe, a 9th gen X1 Carbon. I'm not sure how well this will go but I'm going to give it a go. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough 💯 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough RE: https://mamot.fr/@gorekhaa/117184810021635532 This is just absolutely ridiculous. After more than 30 years of using Linux, it seems the days of me running Linux are numbered and I will be moving to a different option. An option that I started working on a few months back. As a user of Debian for many, many years, I am seriously disappointed with this decision. I had higher hopes that Debian, out of all of the Linux projects out there, would be more responsible and understand the negative ethical issues of using AI. It seems I was wrong. #debian #fuckai #noai #note1apd…gxp3 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Thanks, but I'm not on FB. I found a pretty cool used camera store here in St. Louis. 👍 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough So, I'm wanting to get back into photography. It's been many years. I'm looking for a camera that will be easy to carry, take great shots, but won't break the bank. I'm "full-time" unemployed and working multiple part-time jobs to get by so don't want to break the bank. I commute by bike and see some great things on a daily basis and would love to document the things I see. Any recommendations on a decent digital camera that would work for something like this? Just yesterday, I stopped off at a Best Buy to look at a Canon R100. The size is perfect, the price is a bit out of my range at $549 but I was close to buying it. I stopped when I realized it didn't include any storage. That instantly put it out of my budget. I'm not really wanting something "point and shoot". Would appreciate any recommendations from folks in the know. Thanks! #digitalphotography #camera #digitalcamera npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Emacs 31.1 released https://lwn.net/Articles/1090308/ npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough At the end of this month, it will be 3 years since I lost my last job in IT. At nearly 60, and after 30+ years of working in the IT world, I have finally accepted that I will never work in IT again (no company will hire a 60 year old). But, damn, it would be nice to find something full-time, and not have to work 3 part-time jobs just to survive from week to week. Is that asking too much? npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Has anyone tried the new FreeBSD Desktop Installer? I've tried to get it to work multiple times but it just doesn't, for me, at least. After completing the install of Xfce, there's no display manager (I've tried both options) and there's no desktop. When I watch a video from the FreeBSD Foundation on the installer, it seems to work flawlessly for them. I think this is supposed to be built-in to 15.2 when released. Maybe I'll have better luck then? #freebsd npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough RE: https://mastodon.social/@cmconseils/117140344682377458 😂 #note1fl4…krcg npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough On my last instance, I was following way too many people. As old as the many years I've been running Linux. 😍 I started on Slackware and then many years later, I landed on Debian as my distribution of choice (there were a few others in between). https://bits.debian.org/2026/08/debian-turns-33.html npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Created a @npub1rly…q7zn account and thinking of spinning up a GoToSocial instance. And then it only lasts 10 to 20 minutes before becoming unresponsive again. I've been using a few other, more light weight, web apps, but they just aren't what I'm looking for. Anyone out there figure out how to get the Mastodon web app running better and not slowing down over an hour or so of use? I'm sure it's JavaScript slowing it down but I just can't seem to figure out how to fix the problem. Thanks! npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Just switched to Elk because is has more features that I want. It's working beautifully. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough For those of you experiencing sluggishness and unresponsiveness with the default Mastodon web app, try a different, more lightweight web app. I've been running Pinafore for just over an hour and there have been no issues. I do really like the default web app, though, and wish they could get it running better. Pinafore is working well, though, so this is what I'll be using from this point forward. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Quick update. I've been running pinafore for about an hour and so far, all is good. No sluggishness. I really wish they could get the default web app to work better because I do really like it. Pinafore is good for now, though. @npub1n2l…emxp npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Posting this from a different web app. The same app that I used for GoToSocial. When I was using GoToSocial, I used a different web app since GoToSocial doesn't have an app of its own. I will report back with my findings. Thanks! @npub1n2l…emxp npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I'm running Vivaldi, Firefox, and Waterfox on Debian 13 Stable. I am seeing the sluggishness/slowdown on all browsers. After about 10 or 15 minutes, my feed becomes unresponsive. If I restart my browser, it's usually okay for about another 10 or 15 minutes. A few times, the browser tab crashed and I had to reopen it. @npub1n2l…emxp npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Thanks for the info, Joe. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough My Mastodon instance has become almost unresponsive for me. It's been this way the past week or so. Refreshing the browser works for about 10 minutes and then right back to waiting forever for it to respond to anything that I do. GoToSocial is a bit limited compared to Mastodon, I know, but I never experienced these issues when I was part of a GoToSocial instance. Is Mastodon just more "bloated"? npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Today, I sent a bit of financial support to an Open Source project that I have a huge amount of respect for (and bought a cool t-shirt, too!). I'm not able to afford much, but I want to show the project in some way how much I appreciate all that they do. If you are able to support a project like this, please do! And of course, not all support has to be financial. Most of the people who work on software that we use every single day do it for free and in their own time. #support #opensource npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough 💯 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough The first fediverse instance I joined back in 2022 was Vivaldi Social, and I just realized the account is still open. If I had known my account on Vivaldi Social was still up and running, I would have just moved there instead of my current instance. Nothing at all against this instance (it's awesome!). It would probably just be a good idea to only have one open. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Sure, but this technology is rotten to the core. It was created by the rich, for the rich, to bring down hardworking folks. This was created to replace the human workforce. Period. Listen, I'm not so naive to think that I am going to change the minds of people who use AI because the fact that people use AI tells that those very people care about themselves and no one else. I'm done with this conversation. It's a waste of time. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Yeah, okay. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/data-centers/amazons-new-7-65gw-texas-ai-data-center-power-plant-could-become-the-largest-source-of-co2-pollution-in-the-us-custom-35-turbine-gas-plant-authorized-to-emit-33-million-tons-of-annual-greenhouse-gases npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I just love it when people do their best to defend LLMs and, to an extent, the use of AI. It makes me sick, actually. AI users don't care about where that data came from or what their use of AI is doing to the planet, people, everything. @npub1xcd…hnp8 @npub16nm…cc46 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Anyone on a GoToSocial instance and can tell me how to delete an account? I'm trying to close my old instance account and I simply cannot find a way to delete the account. I've searched through the instance settings, read the docs, etc. I am sure the delete button is staring me in the face and I'm just not seeing it. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Something I've noticed with Mastodon: It is rather slow to respond at times, and if I leave it sitting idol for an hour or so, it takes forever to respond. I even sometimes have to refresh the page or restart my browser. I noticed this when I was on a Mastodon instance before moving to a GoToSocial instance, too, a few years ago. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I've been a Linux user for more than 30 years. And out of those 30 years, I've been running Debian for the past 20. But since their decision to use AI or not is still "up in the air", I've been testing distributions that are vocally against AI usage, just in case I have to make the switch. For the past week, I've been running @npub16nm…cc46 on an extra desktop. And yes, before any of you reply, all Linux distributions are now tainted by the Linux kernel (thanks, Torvalds), but the elementary team have been vocally against any other AI usage and I really respect this. Anyway, I've been using it for a week or so and it's very stable, absolutely beautiful, and is backed by a wonderful team. 5/5 stars. #noai npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough RE: https://social.vivaldi.net/@Vivaldi/117047776154100894 What a great idea! #note1d64…5dw7 npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough Nice! npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough RE: https://oldbytes.space/@logout/117031448273895935 Oh, my. I'm an old-school Linux user (30+ years) and just getting back into the BSDs. FreeBSD, specifically, but I'm interested in learning about all of them! I'm a former Unix Hardware Engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation, the best company I ever worked for. I miss that job every single day. Over the years, I've worked with Unix in the hardware space, Unix support, a bit of development, and even Information Security. I was laid off a few years ago from an IT job and have had a hard time finding new work. I think it's because of my age, but I gave up caring a year or so ago. I'm now working for a non-profit. I enjoy the work but do miss working in the IT industry. At nearly 60 years old, not sure if I'll ever have the chance to return to IT. I'm a bicycle commuter and public transit user and advocate. I'm not a fan of cars but understand that here in the US, it's hard not to have one since our cities have been rebuilt around the car. I wish more funding was put into better and safer pedestrian, bike, and public transit. I'll probably talk a bit about that in my posts. I've been vegan and an animal rights advocate for more than 30 years. I'm also not a fan of AI for all of the horrible ethical reasons. I could go into all of the reasons I'm no fan, but that would take a long blog post and I don't want to put you all to sleep. Anyway, I'm happy to be a part of this instance, and I hope you all enjoy my posts about bikes, public transit, Linux, Open Source Software, IT Security, Privacy, and the BSDs. I'm a Socialist, but will try my best to stay away from politics. npub1dedd24ljsp73lz08g5v2qy3c4fhfvyvd8eqp5z6u2gja63zf82dsqnkves Chad McCullough I have to admit, I love the fediverse, but attempting to move from one instance to another is rather confusing. I am currently trying to move my profile from a GoToSocial instance to this new instance and just can't figure it out. I attempted to move from GtS a year or so ago and it became so confusing that I gave up and stayed on the old instance. The GtS documentation tells you to create an alias but then nothing else. The Mastodon documentation is just as confusing.
