You would watch for patterns, if your seeing a IP address request the same file but change user-agents that’s one easy way to know it’s a bad actor.
Some homes have a static IP address, you’re not using the IP hash for analytics (that’s against EU law).
But you would know which IP is fetching transcripts and audio file - I am happy to jump on a call with you tomorrow to discuss this, I can’t give our secret of how we do it internally over social.

My two takes on this secure HLS. If you’re a hosting company and can’t handle the traffic, then get out of hosting.
Our job is to deliver our clients’ content to the public if it’s in the RSS, and the user hasn’t said make it private or limit the ability of people to get it, then our job is simple: deliver that content.
Sure, by all means, rate limit it and block ASNs and user-agents, but that is where it should stop.

Isn’t Rust amazing. I converted our music fingerprint software from Python to Rust (using AI) and instead of 20-40 stations we can now support up to 2000-4000 stations per server.
Am actually going to hit our bandwidth pipe limit before a server side limit.
Guess I now have to budget more bandwidth. We want to support 20,000 stations being tracked. Yes we could use ARCCloud…

I get what your saying, but it’s really up to the hosting companies to do better. They are the ones that allow free hosting with DAI in the first place.
It’s their business that they are ruining. Triton and others will just block that hosting provider from getting DAI ads. It’s already being discussed internally at some SSP providers that I talk to.

I know if we have spam on PodToo we would suspend and terminate the users account. That’s our policy, but for that to be enforced we would need to be alerted by someone or something, as we role out our AI tools next week. Part of the tools is an AI score based on a lot of information.
It will automatically add a ai tag in the episode level that says how much of the episode is AI generated in percentage.
Now what tag are we using - looking at GitHub today to see if one already exists.

true on that one I am sadly a Mac fan boy… don’t ask me why.
We have windows in the office but I dislike so much. And Linux is great for me, have a Ubuntu computer and all, but still go to my Mac more than my Linux just because it’s got everything I need including Xcode.
I am not a fan of Android partner loves Android.

jumping in, this is interesting. 🧐
Should hosting companies not be updating the index like say in worse case a podcaster closes their account and moves to another provider.
So no 301 redirect. Would it be beneficial for hosting companies to send a podping with the value delete?

Well a big weekend here at PodToo, we have a number of projects well underway, I'll most likely end development on Podcast Performance Github, as we have found a more detailed way of getting player data without upsetting the community (i hope).
It doesn't mean that I don't want to see an open standard for player stats, what it means was I was kinda fed up on waiting for everyone to agree on away forward and needed to look at my business needs and to see how can we get the data.

I haven’t forgotten, just been tied down with server security improvements for our support of music files.
I am manually uploading the HLS files now. It was only a total of 749.6MB with 3 adaptive bit rates.
Note that we did not include 1080p in it due to the orginal is only 720p.

Ok, really need a better service than Riverside please, the lag was that bad that we can't even use any of the recordings that we just did.
I am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions please:
- Software we can run on our own server?
- Other Recording tools that are Australian or Asia based

so if you signed up for mailing you need to add those That pictured in your post to your domain DNS provider.
Who do you host with happy to help point you to a hope to add cname for that provider. Each mailing gets their own cname records you can’t use podcast index mailing server unless they add you onto their sender list.

Would really love if the #PodcastIndex could ask players to support `x-playback-session-id` header, this is a UUID random for a session. This allows us to know if a person on a CGNAT network (IP changes per request) is listening and what they are listening too. Apple Podcast and Spotify both support this.
We still don't know WHO the person is, but we can say that it is 1 person not 60 people.

Matt if you need a video hosting provider I am happy to give you 12 months free hosting. That way James you get the response in RSS and Matt we will be launching Video to YouTube integration end of next month.
This solves in my mind the argument that a creator has to pick. We as hosting provider can spread them everywhere that the creator wants to be.
Maybe the discussion needs to be around why no good video player for RSS yet?

the issue with live chat Sam is your asking the host to be the live broadcaster so the live chat needs to be an open standard that can be cross comments and hosting providers can provide a JSON or xml of it for the broadcast software like OSB. This is what I believe twitch and streamyard can do.

mp3, mp4 & m4a I believe have chapters and James is right smart podcast players will fetch them if they have them.
It would mean one less tag needed in RSS as well to be honest.

I was thinking you might go one step further and say oh your podcast episode doesn’t have transcript tag so here is a podcast host that can do it for you.
You know I like what you do. Just remember your investors are interested in listeners side and the earning opportunity not the hey that podcast host your with does do this tag so switch.
Unless your strategy is to earn an affiliate fee for each referral sign up I don’t see the reason to promote other hosts. IMO.

also I am not saying that those numbers are the numbers we use, as it's more complicated for every platform depending on the creator, we do audiobooks and Kobo for example needs different artwork specs.
Banners are messy and it's why I am of the opinion it should really be a manual thing that the creator does on the players platform where possible.
We can offer a few versions by default in RSS, but we can't cater for everyones custom UI design needs.

Thanks for helping me understand your thought.
The issue I see and it's a technical one is we support all different banners from Apple TV banner specs to Youtube banner Specs to even custom specs from podcast players and platforms already (they just have to ask).
What we do is give them a guide like this, we save design 1 jpg and as long as you design in this it will work on most apps + TV.
This allows us to keep it as 1 image file, then we can crop it into those.

in our case it is any URl from PodToo. But we know that normally it’s the same show just different episodes.
So we want to work with players to just say please don’t send any more than 3 requests per minute.
It’s just that our costs are based on concurrent connections - which equal more speed our server sends out we have a limit of 500mbps for each CDN.
Bandwidth unlimited. If that helps.

remember apps like @npub1thg…zq23’s Truefans makes it’s easy for users to boost and they don’t need to understand the technology.
Fountain by @npub1cwm…wcs6 allows you to top up with a credit card so that’s easy too.
I think there been confusion around listener wallets and their onboarding process and creator wallets and their onboarding process.
The process for creators is a little more technical than the listener if they use those two app. I’d say for non-tech ppl TrueFans is easier imo.

We are seeking legal advise around boostagrams and boosts, as they are not products, and therefore "MAY" fall under the AUSTRAC definition and require us to be registered with them.
However we did not get a clear answer on it, when I asked about this and was recommended further consultation.
If anyone can explain to me how boostagrams or boosts "could" be sold as a "product/goods of service" please reply.

When switched to Australia and signed in the show no longer is available which tells me they are geo blocking it in Apple.

no we still use banner tag. But we also support image tag.
It was easier for our UI to continue using the podcast:banner we now have over 100 shows that use it.
Honestly I gave up trying to sell it to everyone.
