People replied the same thing on the poll asking whether they'd personally sat on a cow :-)
As with the cows there's much more to it. There's lots of European countries with subsidised trips for schools to visit the legislature. And other, small countries, without that.
Also: Seriously. I'm not asking if you own a moon. The fast majority of us have the financial means to visit another city at least once in our life..

How many national parliaments (the buildings) have you visited?
My hypothesis is that a significant mid-double-digit percentage of people have at least visited the one in their home country (often as part of a school trip) and the other options will all be single digit percentages.
I'm not gonne do the "boost for scientific accuracy" thing here.. but, uhm.. if you can boost this it'll be more accurate, in a scientistic way.

Periodical reminder the European Commission runs something called Safety Gate.
It's an easy way to find out whether that niche and/or dodgy thing you bought has been part of an official recall anywhere in the single market.
Apart of branded stuff where the manufacturer made a genuine error there's also the utter crap (often sold by Amazon, don't buy there) like the murderous brush cutter chainsaw attachments that keep popping up.

Progress can creep up on you. As my employer is based there I regularly stay in the Dutch town of Amersfoort. In the evenings I walk.
Amersfoort is a boom town. It doubled, tripled, quadrupled without people really noticing. It constantly swallows up villages and towns around it.
Last visit this was a field. Now there's a development with apartments that all look cozy through their big windows. Family life.
Outside it already failed though. There's trash in the water and sad plants.

Train question. ICE trains often have stickers referring to an emergency ladder / escape ladder (exact text depends on the sticker..).
I've been wondering for some time where they are. Will a ladder magically pop out of the wall? Do they even exist? How will panicking passengers know?

Advice requested! Looking for a simple, affordable, two disk (mirrored) NAS.
main use:
-network file share there via our laptops (Windows, Linux). Just basic drag & drop is fine. Preferably without dedicated software.
-serve media (via our AndroidTV box).
nice to have:
-access to music (.mp3 .flac) on phones (iOs) while outside our own network.
-outside access to files.
User level: am not an idiot but value my time and our money. Am happy with basic products.

Goodmorning!
In December we got toddler a little cargo bike. Since then every morning when we arrive in our utility room they carefully carry their bottle to the little bike, place it, and drive around.
When we're ready to leave they cheerfully get up and move to be the cargo of the full sized cargo bike.
It melts my heart every single time.

It's been a pretty good aurora for about two hours. Nice red and green patches looking north-ish. At times a minute or two of very bright columns.
And then about 40 minutes ago..
..the sky just exploded and became a bright green dome. As if everything around us was engulfed in a green fog. Its brightness dimmed stars. A couple of very bright waves or streaks (like a toddler with a fatty green crayon) even cast shadows.

Positive #news:
This month the High Seas Treaty entered into force!
It's a legally binding instrument for the conservation of marine biological diversity in international waters.
It has the potential to truly create conservation measures (marine protected areas) on the high seas.
It's a work of decades. As an intern with GP ~2000 I remember using GIS to create a global mockup of protected areas and wondering if it would ever happen.

Many years ago I stumbled upon Forester's book in the (Dutch) library and got tricked into reading, thinking it to be a scientific introduction to traffic management etc.
I remember my confusion when the first chapters started not by describing the actual world, but by defining "real cyclists" and "real bicycles". While I finished the policy sections of the book it ended up being a lesson about the dangers of zealotism.

Moving on we stumble upon a Rommelmarktwinkel (rommel markt winkel). Literally translates that makes a Trash Market Store. More sensibly: a flea market store selling used trinkets.

Entering this town center we encounter a variety of shops, food places and facilities serving the community.
First we pass one of the multiple (!!) local snackbars. According to Google Reviews burgers "not that bad. Better than the chicken". Unfortunately I could not test it myself as they're closed on Monday and Tuesday and the rest of this week.
Some guy named John Stuur does not like how there's a unisex toilet.

Huh. Someone has been DM-ing (with what I assume are sock-puppet accounts) telling me I'm wrong and the correct #LOTR quote is "You shall not pass!". As they're rather boring I just block & report them. It seems server admins have removed all or most of the accounts :-)

As requested: how to get seeds from #sequoia cones.
Step 1/3: get some #sequoia cones and let them dry for a couple weeks. These cones were picked from the wet ground in #Kiel.
My preferred spot is on top of our heat-pump as it being juuust a bit warmer than the surrounding room creates a constant airflow away from the cones. This prevents mold and works for a surprisingly fast drying process.

We're in #Kiel. As people on Mastodon recommended we just visited the aquarium. I liked how they have displays with local (north-atlantic, waddensea) sea-life.
Nearby we stumbled upon the "Old Botanical Garden" while no-one recommended it the place is definitely a highlight. A lot of variety in somewhat older trees set in romantic landscaping overrun with squirrels. Also saw a black squirrel 🐿️ ✅. I collected some Giant Sequoia & Japanese maple seeds :-)

On Europe's local-less-busy-routes train future now: a battery powered Stadler Flirt (Nordbahn, top of Germany).
It's.. just a nice spacious quiet practical boring commuter train. Has a spacious toilet with well designed diaper changing table.
And clean, maintained even! (looking at you GoCollective)

#train We're on a Danish DSB #IC3 train to Germany. Probably for the last, or at least one of the last, times.
While I'm sure the newer trains will be adequate. I'll also certainly miss the feeling of luxury of the current ones. With the quiet running, and spacious and warm interior the IC3 trains are just a pleasure to travel on.

Small dilemma: as a #train was taken out of service due to someone* alerting the staff of an issue, I ended up being delayed** and now eligible to financial compensation under the travel time guarantee.
While GoCollective could've done a bit more preventive maintenance, and while it was annoying for some minutes I don't *feel* wronged though.

Should I claim the financial compensation?

Hurrah. On a moving train.
I just learned the reason the previous one was cancelled.
It was a last minute thing as on an earlier journey a passenger (yes, that one..) had pointed out a door was failing. When it arrived there again a mechanic was waiting to quickly fix it, couldn't and made it worse, so they cancelled the train.
What's wrong with just putting some "out of action" tape over the hole and go for survival of the fittest ;-)
We're having a great day though :-)

Ooooh, #gocollective. We just found out our last* train of the day is cancelled. There's IS a train standing at the platform it's just.. not going.
Luckily there was a GoCollective staff member who turned out to be actual driver. Looking at his phone he also found out that the train is cancelled. And he has no idea why.
I guess we're all taking the next train. Go NoCollective!

Edit: not taking a #DSB train as we have a GoCollective day pass.

We're in a much more modern #train now. On our way to Esbjerg.
Alstom Coradia LINT 41. No #FensterAuf but if we keep going one of the doors will instead provide that picturesque outdoor vibe 😬 Toddler seems to like to rhythmic sound.

Toddler and I are doing international travel (Niebüll (DE) - Tønder (DK)) in the luxury of an old-style diesel railcar. It has little curtains and comfy seats. The high and narrow entrance would block most baby strollers.
I'm a bit confused on what this railcar actually is though. From what I gather it's about 30yrs old, named T4 and based on the ÖBB Class 5047 (designed in line with BR627/628 / Wadloper trains?). Is it a special thing?
No border police.

Re: fine-tuned: It was pointed out to me that the Operations Manager did not "flopped on his face." but in fact "graciously fell".
He has access to the CCTV footage thus has the means to check whether he indeed was gracious in falling.
We do proper datacenter duck journalism here. So that's why it now says "graciously fell on the floor face first." 🦆
I was also informed the lawyer laughed when reading this thread and didn't see any issues. I wish he simply hadn't mentioned the lawyer. :-/

Some updates:
-No, we didn't return to the facility today.
-I talked to the Operations Manager who had been forwarded this by a friend (who has no idea it is about his friends facility). He used his office printer to print the entire thing 😂 Note: the post mentioning him was fine-tuned: https://mastodon.online/@Pepijn/115029182763323544
-people keep asking for photos. And that won't happen. That said. I want photos as well, so when I'm home again Toddler and myself will reenact it all as professional as we can.

The two dudes were now ready to escort Duck off the premises. They cycled through the "airlock" while we waited inside for the Powers To Be. Those powers soon decided a debrief was needed, which we ended up doing over coffee in a meeting room. We got our phones. The NDA was discussed again.. And no, we would not be getting a CCTV clip of Duck.
Meanwhile Duck was released in the little pond close-ish to the datacenter. When we left later it had already blended in with the other ducks.

Now it all went fast. Dude one used the broom to duckhunt Duck into a corner. Dude two then jumped on Duck while using the jacket to cover and grab Duck. This went super well as Duck was remarkably okish with all of this.
Dude two then secured Duck in his jacket/arm combo and looked extremely proud of himself. I said "Nice, you must've played a lot of Nintendo!" and received cold stares from the datacenter people and a smile from dude two. Dude one tried really hard to be professional.

After a couple minutes two security type dudes and their tools got into the server area via the timed door system (or whatever it's called: it's like an airlock that cycles between two doors and deliberately takes a couple minutes).
We were still there as well as protocol, safety, timed doors etc etc.
I was fine as, again, one of the best days of my life. :-)
Duck by now had done a fully 360 loop of the server area. My brain started leaking out the duck puns.

A somewhat heated discussion evolved that I won't document here. It did conclude with the operations centre being fairly sure there was only Duck, and not Duck, Duckster, Ducky and Ducktilla.
They also figured out how Duck had penetrated the facility.
Also by then an organic process of fricking common sense had figured out that it would take two people to catch Duck. A decision was made to bring in two people with tools: a jacket and a broomstick.

By now Duck was puttering about in some cable-heavy-area. Locals were very nervous about that.
The Operations Manager (in charge of the tour) heroically aimed for a quick resolution, ran at-, and aimed to grab Duck. This ended in unfortunate failure as Duck speed-wobbled away and our hero graciously fell on the floor face first.
Duck did a tiny poop on the floor.
While this was going on, staff in the operations centre had started to pay attention and informed us there was a duck.

Meanwhile I had stopped laughing (CCTV footage from the initial moment shows me with a massive grin on my face shouting "hah, there's a duck!", my colleague neutral, and the locals in instant shock) and decided I would absolutely not be the hero.
Reasoning was that I didn't want to be redshirted by being shat upon while being filmed from all angles. My colleague clearly had the same reasoning. The locals appeared to be "caught outside protocol" and looked genuinely bemused.

I see questions on what happened after the initial shock. I'll share what I can.
As I personally prefer to know the ending of a story at all times let's do so here as well: The hero of our story, Agent Duck, ended up being absolutely fine.
So. Here we were inside the datacenter when suddenly duck, DUCK! After the initial surprise slash utter panic it was clear Duck was not at all stressed and didn't seem bothered by the complexity of the situation.
Frankly. Duck was just ducking about.

Lol @ the person(s?) going through my post history to find the name of the datacenter. Don't bother as you won't find it.
Some hints though: it's indeed in the Netherlands, and I indeed travelled here from Denmark yesterday. And something easily overlooked: it's in an area with ducks (at least one).
