On my way to an appointment to get my covid vaccine.
I've been doing a lot of research and the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. Studies have conclusively proven the side effects of the covid vaccine are both rare and minor, and the consequences of being unvaccinated are detrimental - both for ones one health and the health and well-being of society in general.

The chicken in question died during a particularly severe cold snap and the ground was frozen solid. I ended up making a bonfire for a about two hours in order to thaw the ground out enough to dig a grave. My wife asked me why I didn't just leave it out in the field to let nature take its course, but this hen was one of The Originals from 2020 so I felt she deserved a proper Christian burial.

We were out of Bisquick so I used Mom's old made-from-scratch recipe for a big batch of pancakes. I haven't used this recipe since before the kids were born. I'm glad I made these from scratch because a friend of mine makes his own maple syrup and box mix pancakes just wouldn't do it justice. He makes it traditionally over a fire so it has a subtle smoky flavor. It's an interesting taste.

The last time I slaughtered some old roosters my wife made a nice stock from the carcass.

When I say the Cheetos were pointless I learned later that the fat in the meat tends to neutralize the capsicum in powders or sauces, so you want to add actual jalapeños to keep the heat.

When I say I used A1 for the glaze I mean I added it to the ketchup and brown sugar mix. The recipe called for vinegar or mustard.

I tried my hand at Dutch oven meatloaf last night. It was actually the first time I've ever made meatloaf by any means. Since it was going to take so long I cooked it next to the fire instead of over it, and I used the fire to generate coals. I used oak but for some reason the coals kept going out on me, especially on the bottom in contact with the stump, and I had to refresh them probably 4-5 times. My son helped me blow on them to keep it going. I didn't have everything I needed for the glaze so I used A1 sauce and it turned out really nice. I used a bed of onions on the bottom to prevent scorching and I think it helped give it a nice flavor. I had this idea that if I add spicy jalapeño Cheetos to the mixture that it would make a nice hot meatloaf, but I couldn't detect it at all. That being said, it tasted pretty good. I was telling my mom about it and she asked what sides I was going to make and I hadn't thought that far ahead so I just tossed in some potatoes too.

We've got a new possum hanging around in the yard. I was outside the other day and he sauntered up like he owned the place and started drinking out of the cats' water dish. Normally I don't care about possums hanging around but sometimes they get a taste for diurnal meanderings and eventually start to view the chickens as tasty snacks. Last year I had to dispatch three possums after I kept finding headless chickens laying about. I chased this one around with a croquet mallet just to let him know I was on to his game.

I've got a blacksmith demonstration tomorrow for the boy's scout troop, and we're going to do some team striking making a few railroad spike knives. I noticed my railroad spike tongs looked a little worse for wear so I made a quick and dirty replacement just in case the other pair decides to break. They look a little crude because I was rushed but this is the first time I forged the bit and boss separately and then forge welded the reins. The forge weld seems to be pretty secure - I've put enough stress on it with bending the reins and final shaping that I think if there was a defect I'd have found it by now. These are technically considered bolt jaw tongs but they work fine for everything between ⅜"-⅝".

Forged this S-hook out of an old piece of rebar today. Unlike modern rebar it's more of a rounded square in profile with ridges spaced down the bar. I thought it would make an interesting pattern when twisted. I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. It's roughly ⅜" square and about a foot long. I couldn't find much info about the rebar itself, and the best I could gather was that it was probably a proprietary pattern from a local mill in the 1920s-1940s.

I got my hands on some (presumably) stainless rods from the pitch slip rings. Thinking about forging some campfire forks with them. On the one hand the stainless won't match the blackened/forged look from the rest of my setup, but on the other I won't have to worry about keeping forged food contact items constantly oiled and out of the elements.

I think I've got a coil pack going bad because I had some misfires the other morning. Naturally it didn't store which cylinder was doing the misfire so I'll either have to replace them all or wait until it does it again and hope the code holds. It's due for a spark plug change anyway so I'll do that and see what happens.
When I got to work I found a 2' wad of muffler fiberglass hanging out the tailpipe so it must've been one heck of a misfire.

In a way I'm glad my pneumonia experience last year was bad enough to give me an abnormal heart rhythm, it triggered enough testing that now I know I have clear arteries in my heart.

The kids have been wanting a dog for awhile now. A stray puppy showed up at the house of one of my wife's friends so we agreed to keep it for a few days until a suitable home could be found - with the informal understanding between the wife and I that perhaps if it seemed a good match we would be that suitable home.
It's been a little overly aggressive with the cats, who will eventually sort him out on their own, and with the chickens, which I'm concerned about but willing to try to train it out of him.
Last night we were going to be gone for a few hours so we put him in the bathroom in case he couldn't hold it he'd at least be on linoleum. I came home to a hole chewed halfway through the door (it's a cheap hollow core) and the wooden threshold literally eaten.
Not real happy about that.

I used to have a Gab folder on a USB stick where I kept mostly screenshots of things I found hilarious or compliments that I thought were particularly sincere. I think it's easy to forget kind things people say to you and even though someone might be "just an internet friend" it's still nice to make that human connection. I opened it awhile back and it was completely blank. Don't know what happened but the folder is empty now. Such a shame.
